Game lost so many ways--but 2 penalties stand out--1 dumb as they come, and another a big 10 special

After PSU D stops Mich St 3 straight plays from around 1-2 yd line, Thorpe couldn't be disciplined and threw a punch--essentially gave them 7 points instead of 3 with FG (difference in game on one second loss of temper)

The defensive hold on Windsor was so bizarre--if he had a hold, it was a nanosecond that likely happens often and was an unusual call on a D lineman--nothing blatant, and nothing I've seen called ever before--essentially a call that flipped a 3d down stop to a touchdown drive for Mich St. So 11 points came after D stopped Mich St and essentially turnover type drive extending penalties.

There was also a dumb defensive holding penalty on Cam Brown late in the first half that gave MSU a first down instead of forcing a punt from their own 16. Instead MSU moved the ball to midfield and PSU took over deep in their own territory right before the half. The penalty took away good field position and any chance to mount a scoring drive before the half.

Regarding the PF, I think MSU would have punched it in on 4th and goal anyway, so I don't really look at it as 7 vs 3.
The hold on 54 was just a BS call

I needed a break from all things football after this loss, so I apologize ahead of time for the long post.

Yep... stupid penalties allowed them to stay on the field and score two touchdowns. The "hold" was awful and never should have been called. That ref should be investigated for gambling, or to at least confirm that he has a Sparty Man Cave.

I think we lost for these reasons (I will try to be succinct):

1. No pressure on the MSU QB (while they rattled Trace early and got into his head, not allowing him to set his feet). Our blitzes were ridiculously late and made it easy for MSU to complete passes.
2. WR play. They did not get separation all game. We have a senior WR on the field. You wouldn't be able to pick him out if you didn't already know who he was (there isn't anyone better on the team?) JJ is a mess. I think he is suffering from a lack of confidence.
3. The MSU front 4. Give them credit...these guys were the SOLE reason MSU was still in the game. It allowed MSU to play tight to our WR's.
4. #21. When a throw hits you in the belly, you secure the catch. END OF GAME right there. No excuses.
5. Shoe string tackles. How many times this game were we a "shoe string" away frm breaking a big play? I think we need to use velcro instead....

There are more, but these stood out to me.

So disappointing, but I am now realizing we aren't as good as I thought we were.

I'm not sure that the game wasn't lost with Trace's fumble in the second drive of the first quarter. There was a great chance to go up 14-0 early, and he seemed to be a different- and not in a good way- player after that.

And the final stats show we only had 6 penalties, but there were two occasions where we had two penalties called against us and they were declined. That gets us to 10 and there might have been another single penalty that was declined but I lost count. And not a single holding call against MSU...ugly game officiating wise.

Trace's fumble was on first drive, was it not? Score was 0-0 at that point.
