Game thoughts and other musings....

On business travel this week and was finally able to watch the entire game - certainly more fun to watch when you know the outcome. Anyway, wanted to share some thoughts and get more feedback from folks now that I have some context.

1. McSorley was awesome - I haven't seen him run like that before; he was so much more confident and sturdy. Really opens up the offense if you have to account for his feet being a serious threat.

2. Focus on Barkley, and everyone else will kill you. And they did. Especially Hamilton, who is quietly having the best WR career ever of any Penn Stater. We've been lucky recently with Robinson and Godwin, but Hamilton - after what seemed like a shaky year last year - has become Mr. Consistent. And I love that Michigan thought they had him figured out when they put Hill on him in the slot only to have him beat time and time again. Thanks Desean!

3. Speaking of receivers - what is up with Irvin Charles? He's huge, fast, and plays mean (see him destroying everyone on ST). Is he in the doghouse? Can he play LB (only sorta kidding)? He has the right number....

4. Nordin looked like a chump.

5. Bowen has really come into his own. He's going to be super important next year.

6. Have to love the emergence of some guys on the DL - especially Toney and Buchholz. Again, will be really important next year given our losses there but plenty of talent in the cupboard.

7. Really concerned when I heard the entire secondary will be gone next year. Will be great to get Reid back and of course there is a lot of talent waiting in the wings, but will be hard to replace the leadership of guys like Allen, Campbell, and Haley.

8. Thought Herbie and Fowler were pretty fair, though I did hear Herbie dig a bit into this new metric for determining how good a team is - and that is 'last year's performance'. He's at least the third major sportscaster I've heard start to talk about this. They mostly do it with Bama, but he mentioned in Penn State's context (that they only lost a few players from last year).

9. Hate to look ahead, but this is going to be a really different team next year. No Allen, Barkley, Campbell, Cabinda, Gesicki, Haley, Hamilton, Cothren, Cothran, Nelson, Mahon, Smith, Blacknall, or Apke (I can't imagine someone like Johnson would go pro, but he could). Really going to miss the leadership and experience of those guys.

10. White Out was amazing - truly one of the most impressive and intimidating venues in the world. Wish we could take another 15 recruits in this class because after Saturday night I bet many would love to be Lions.

Allen will be missed big time. Reid returns and is one of the best cover corners in the country. Amani will man the other CB spot which leaves Wade, Z. McPhearsom and TCF at nickel corner. That MIGHT be better than this year. At safety Apke can be replaced by Taylor, Monroe or Scott with one of the others taking Allen's spot. We are going to have a great secondary.

Sunderland is also getting a ton of good praise early on. Much like Bates a few years ago and Toney last year during their RS years.

Before the season began I thought Blacknall would be more of a factor. I'm not complaining, his potential contribution was/is simply diluted by the wealth of talent we now have at WR (and TE)?!

Great write up.....agree with the points that were raised.

Some optimism for next year:

QB: McSorely, Tommy Stevens
RB: Sanders, Robinson, Allen, Journey, Slade
TE: Holland, Dalton, 2 Newbies
OL: Fries, Menet, McGovern, Gonzo, Bates (Thorpe, Miranda, Big Bacon, Simpson,Gellerstedt)
WR: JJ, Charles, Polk, Thompkins, Darien, Hamlin, Hippenhammer, Shorter, George, SAB

Should be explosive Offense:

DL: Miller, Torrance Brown, Givens, Buchholz, Matos, Simmons, Shaka, Bolds, Windsor, PJ Mustipher other Freshman
LB: Bowen, Farmer, Jarvis Miller, Cooper, B. Franklin, Faisen Walden, Brooks, Parsons,
DB: Reid, Oruwariye, Nick Scott, Castro Fields, Wade, Taylor, Monroe, McPherson, Humpries, Young

P: Gilliken
K: Barber, Pinegar

WE should be Okay on Defense and Special Teams as well.

I am actually high on some guys to step up next year:
Sanders, Robinson, Journey, Thorpe, Miranda,Shorter, Polk, Matos, Simmons, Shaka, Jarvis Miller, Brooks, Taylor, Monroe, McPherson

Leadership coming from: McSorely/Bates/JJ/Givens, Buchholz, Bowen, Reid, Scott

Truly want to continue to enjoy this year......but CJF is building an organization where we can withstand some graduation and players leaving early for the draft and to a certain extent we can bring in some talent.

Great Time to be a PSU Fan.

Kuntz at TE is something I’m looking forward to. He’s at least as freakish as Gesicki. But taller.

IIRC, I think CJF recently commented on Charles. The gist I got was that he is still young and that CJF is happy that Charles is able to contribute on special teams and continue to get experience. I think it has to do with the number of talented receivers they have, combined which what has appeared to be a first-half season plan to focus on isolating receivers. With Hamilton, Johnson and Gesicki being so reliable, with Barkley's huge assist as a pass option, it makes it almost impossible to spread the wealth to Charles, Blacknall and Polk. I still think however that we will see more of Blacknall in the back end of the season if RT becomes as much of a non-issue as it was vs. UM.

Liking the way this OL is coming together. Right now we are starting 3 SO and a RFr. And they played very well against what many consider to be the best DL in the country. Next year the OL can help out some of the developing skill talent.

Yes we will lose some good players but we are finally in a position where we will be able to reload. The offense should be just as good.

Good post.
a few responses...

2.) Really happy for Hamilton. He deserves everything that is happening to him.
Does he have NFL talent? I think so.

3.) Charles is killing it on special teams. He just needs to limit his penalties.
I think we just have too many WR's in front of him. He does get on the field but
too many other guys. I think he would be terrific as a TE.

7.) yea we are losing some really good talent but we have some really good talent waiting in the wings just not a ton of experience. I think both Wade and Castro-Fields are going to be very good and don't forget about Jabari Butler. Allen will be a big loss at Safety. He is playing at AA level.

9.) I think we'll be ok on the DL lots of talent behind those guys and they will have experience.
I never thought Nelson would be back like some of the media did. It sucks for him because he was such a trooper in 13-15. Again lots of talent and experience coming back on the OLine.
I'm still expecting a break out game this season for Blacknall, hopefully its Sat. Night.
JMO but the biggest loss (besides Saquon) will be Mike G. we just don't have anyone close to
him right now. That kind of ties in my thought of Charles to TE.

10.) Honestly I think that was the best "White Out" I've ever been too.

7. Really concerned when I heard the entire secondary will be gone next year. Will be great to get Reid back and of course there is a lot of talent waiting in the wings, but will be hard to replace the leadership of guys

Don't forget about Jabari Butler.

Good call on Jabari and someone earlier mentioned Sunderland playing at a high level.

Franklin does seem to be guarded in his praise of the younger players.....but when he does praise there is a reason for it. Hearing good things about Journey Brown, Miranda, Thorpe, Hip, Hamlin........lots to be excited about.

Shorter might be the 2nd best wr next year on the team, and recruit George looks like a 27 year old graduate student....not an 18 year hs player.

Past off season: JJ, Wade, Owarayie, Shaka, Simmons, even improvement in Cabinda and all have proven to be true.

There will be a handful of players that will grow or grow up this summer where the light goes on and they surprise us with their play.

  1. McSorley is a warrior. Lots of missed throws but he doesn't stop fighting.
  2. They showed one play where all 3 LBs and a DB followed Barkley and it gave McSorley a lane to run for a TD.
  3. Hamilton has been great this year. He did't run free but he fights for the ball when he is closely covered.
  4. Nordin will be great. Just missed one kick.
  5. Who is going to play MLB next year with Cabinda & Smith gone?
  6. DEs are gradually improving.
  7. We were lucky to have Allen this year. We'll miss Haley & Campbell. Doesnt Amani return? Reid, Wade.
  8. Charles is just caught up in a numbers game. Heck, we've onky been throwing to Gesicki a few times per game.
  9. Home field is worth 6 pts. A white out is wirth 10 pts.

Lamont wade made some great plays. The time he came off his receiver to break up that pass was impressive, so was his TFL. I have been hard on Toney but he looked good against michigan too

IIRC, I think CJF recently commented on Charles. .

If you're watching closely, #11 has been a really big contributor this year. Good example of how much impact a player can have without the ball. He's an amazing athlete and he is giving 110% every moment he's on the field. He's got two more years of eligibility so I think stardom is still very much in the cards for him. The light bulb will go on for him the way it did for Gesicki -- the way it did for Johnson before this season.

The way the wideouts block on this team just shows the coaching philosophy. Running routes and catching balls is only part of the job. Downfield blocking is every bit as important. Every player is expected to excel at every aspect of their game.

The reason McSorley ran so hard (IMHO the hardest he ran all year) was cuz of the interception---he was pissed and wanted to make up for it thus his extra motivation and grit...

If that interception didn't happen--OH MY wouldn't been 42-13 more like 60-3

He just wants to win period. The pick was a bad read on Mike G I thought....but I don't think you need extra motivation for a white out against a ranked UM.

I've heard rumor that Barkley hasn't made up his mind whether to stay or go. He kind of lives in the moment and won't make up his mind for some time... it would NOT surprise me if we don't win it all this year and/or he does not win the Heisman that he comes back.

I'm still shocked that McSorley hasn't been able to hit Gesicki down the seam this year. He missed him 2-3 times and he has been wide open. I think Butler will be a big part of the secondary next year. I remember reading that they are really high on him.

Pre Snap you saw them take the call from the sideline looked like Mike G didnt get the call or both were confused-it happens no one is perfect.

I hope he does and buys a huge Llyod's of London insurance policy.

Wade lost track of the UM receiver on the long pass leading up to one of Michigan's TD's.
He looked a little slow trying to catch up to the UM guy. I was surprised to see him get meaningful minutes in this game.

I don't think there is much of a guess here. He'll do and say all the right things, but he has the opportunity to help out a close knit family and really set them up for a while. While everyone would love to see him back at PSU...that is a TON of risk even with an insurance policy.

Yup. Shelf life for RB’s is probably the shortest of any position in the NFL. He can and should go IMO.

I'm shocked we don't throw to Gesicki more often, especially in the red zone. Why get fancy? Just throw it high where only he can catch it.

For some, a lot of money can be a burden rather than a gift.

I would imagine the entire staff would tell him to go. Starting at the top. No doubt they would love to have him back, but they know what is up.

Yes, having him back next year would be a short term win, but being able to point to his career path (significant playing time as a freshman, dominant sophmore and junior seasons, and top 5 pick) could be a gift that keeps on giving for recruiting purposes.

as much as I hate to say this Nordin is very good. He was booming his kicks in practice.
But I loved the shanked EP. LOL.

He also strikes me as the kind of guy that might think coming back is selfish and that he wants Sanders, Robinson and Allen to get their shots.
I have no basis for this, just gut feeling but I think Allen may choose to leave.

That's what I thought when I watched it. Looked like Michigan sat in a zone, and instead of sitting down, Mike G read man to man and turned up the sideline. Trace read Zone and threw to where he thought Mike G was supposed to be sitting .
