Geno Morelli to Penn State

the former Pitt wrestler? ...

I hadn't heard any rumblings that he was switching to PSU.

If he's one and the same, he started his wrestling career off with quite a few familiar names. I think he graduated from DuBois HS in 2012. I can't find any results from him in the 2012-13 college season. He seems to have started his college wrestling career at the 2013 Clarion Open. He won a pigtail match, and then defeated true fresh from PSU, Garett Hammond, 8-4. In the quarters he defeated Ryan LeBlanc (Indiana). (LeBlanc had defeated Brian Brill in R2. Brill was then at Lehigh, but is now on the PSU roster.) Morelli made it to the semis, where he lost 3-1 OT to Cody Wiercioch, who was also a freshman at Pitt. Wiercioch got TFed in the finals by current Buckeye BoJo (Bo Jordan). In the consolations, Hammond had 3 pins and a TF before losing to Ryan LeBlanc, 7-2. After Morelli lost in the Championship semis, he then medical forfeited to Brian Brill in the Consolation semis. Then LeBlanc defeated Brill in the Consolation finals, 7-2, to take 3rd place, with Brill taking 4th.

The GoPSUsports.com roster for Morelli (you can view it at this link) shows him as a junior with sophomore eligibility.

Again, assuming that I have the correct Gino Morelli, it seems the 2013 Clarion Open was kind of the highlight of his college. career. The results of his college matches can be viewed at this link. Seems as though his only notable victory after the Clarion Open was defeating Michigan's Daniel Yates in a dual last Februrary.

If you go back to his high school career, I believe he took 5th place at 170 in the 2012 PIAA Class AAA Championships, and 5th place at 152 in the 2011 PIAA Class AAA Championships.

Perhaps I have the wrong person -- feel free to correct me.

Re: the former Pitt wrestler? ...

PSU directory shows a Geno Morelli from near Dubois.

He's also no longer on the Pitt roster.

Coincidence? Probably not.

Is pete's kid. Shoulder separation was the injury. Pretty darn good athlete.
