Was able to attend today and figured I would share a few thoughts:
Tournament I thought was ran well. Ran straight through with no breaks and 9 mats. 6 mats in one gym and 3 mats in another which usually I'm not a fan of, but with a one day tournament I think it's necessary to have that many mats. Not a ton of seating but there weren't that many spectators so there was enough room. If your a fan of wrestling I would recommend making the trip. ( Would have made it better if a few PSU guys decided to wrestle ). Now on to the wrestling:
125: Kilkeary had a few matches he just didn't look himself, and a few matches where he looked lights out. Wearing a shoulder brace so not sure if he is entirely healthy or its precaution. Dillard wrestled extremely well and I honestly thought he was gonna knock off McCrone, and Lawson from Clarion about knocked off Kilkeary. Both were great matches. I always take matches between teammates with a grain of salt due to familiarity.
133: Again with the teammate matches but both Davino and Bouzakis looked good. I was excited to see Davino and he put up double digit points in every match except for his finals with Bouzakis. Match of the weight I think was Camacho of Edinboro (former Pitt) and Johnson of Clarion, high scoring event and a lot of action. The last period or so wasn't as great, Johnson got his bell rung on a mat return and didn't look right after. Side note, I was able to see a young kid come up to Bouzakis and say hi, Bouzakis introduced himself and had a conversation for a minute or two before going back to cheering on a teammate. Was pretty cool to see him entertain the youngin.
141: When I seen the brackets there was the big 3; Mendez, Stanich and Lemley. Mendez is fast as ever, crisp, and looks really good. A friend of mine who made the trip with me made the comment "watching him in person, its hard to believe Bartlett beat him last year". Lemley and Stanich cruise to the semis and that was a great match. Stanich wins in OT by escaping and preserving the riding time advantage. Listening to the crowd, I would say pretty much everyone was watching that match. Not sure if Stanich takes the redshirt this year or not, but its hard to put either of them in the same tier with Mendez after Mendez majors Stanich in the finals.
149: D'Emilio looks good. One of the names I heard most through the crowd was TrFr Kade Brown. Had a heck of a match with Cooper Hilton (high school sr from TN commited to Michigan). Hilton ended up getting hurt and I hope it's not serious. He's currently ranked 8th in the country at 150. I think Michigan will be pleased with him in the coming years. Back to Brown, makes a run to the finals and loses to D'Emilio 5-1. I heard or read somewhere Brown won the wrestle off in the room with last yeras starter Solomon but not sure if that is true or not. From what I seen today, I believe it. Will be interesting to see what Gavin does there and see his progress through the year.
157: Match of the weight was Burgess from Buffalo and Mattin from Michigan. Burgess gets taken down pretty quick in the first. As hes escaping, he catches a cement mixer and puts Mattin on his back (he was stuck) for a 6pt move. Mattin is able to fight off his back and comes back to tie the match but Burgess ices it late in the third. Herman pinning Herrera Rondon from Clarion (former Oklahoma) so quick in a dump was a bit of a surprise and he goes on to win it.
165: Brignola from Lehigh looked tough. Beat Mantanona 8-6 in the finals after teching his way to the finals. The two I figured would be wrestling were.
174: Not an extremely tough weight, but get used to the name Mario Hutcherson. As a 15 year old freshman, he goes into a college open and goes 2-2 to take 4th. Found out that Sam Star who he wrestled in the quarters, went to the same high school (Kiski Area) that Mario currently attends. Watching him go against a few of these guys, I would say he was a bit undersized (understandably so) but never really got "horsed" around. The match with Joe Walker from Michigan was probably the only match where he was noticeably outmuscled. In the 4 matches I watched, I think that was the only one I could confidently say he never threatened to score. This is one I hope Cael and co try to land. Congrats young man for trying to seek out the best competition you can find at such a young age. I heard quite a few times through the stands about the "high school freshman".
184: Unsure who Carson Thomas is. Tried to ask a few people sitting near me but nobody seemed to know. I put his name in Track and a high school senior came up in Ohio. Not sure if its the same one or not. If anyone was there that can shed light on this that would be great, but he only lost to Jaden Bullock from Michigan 2-1. Welsh looked good. Still strong, stingy, and hard to score on. He also wrestled unattached. What I gathered from that is no everyone who wrestles unattached is redshirting since he already redshirted if I'm not mistaken. Could this be a weight thing since he preregistered at 74 and actually wrestled 84 so he wrestled unattached to save something? I'd imagine a weigh in is a weigh in regardless of roster status so that was a stupid question.
197: Beard looked really good. Absolutely controlled Schumate from tOSU in the semis but I was surprised when he wreslted Geog tOSU in the finals it was that close 7-5. I hope Beard makes it further up the podium this year, just one step down from whoever gets the nod from Cael.
285: Feldman is an absolute freight train. Admittedly, I did not see him in person last year, but I can say I heard a lot of comments on how muscular he was. His shots were quick along with his finishes. Granted he wasn't wrestling top competion (all due respect to the wrestlers) besides Taylor Lehigh who was one match short of AA honors last year. His double and low ankle attacks were textbook. Interested in seeing him go against guys that can match his athleticism like Kerk, Hednrickson, Bastida and Keuter.
Overall like I said, well run tournament with some great early season matches and storylines. Patiently waiting for us to take the mat now.
We Are!
