Clarion Open

Davino beats Bouzakis 5-3. I wonder who ends up going this season. I definitely think Davino has the potential to place higher by the end of the year. Kid is very good
I think Bouzakis is unhappy at tOSU. That's why Vince re-opened his recruitment.

Couple things from the Clarion Open

Michael Beard looked strong. Glad to see him doing well.

Mario Hutcherson will be scary good as he keeps getting older. He has the right mindset and is a dawg. Full court press.

I'm curious if Welsh stays at 184lb or goes down since Carter and Kickeisen is there.

Per an Ohio State board, Kilkeary used an illegal cutback on a teammate? And ended up losing to this teammate, anyway (McCrone)?
he does that a lot. The jonsey tilt is legal but it becomes illegal when he leaves his feet to do it IIRC. will be interesting to see how refs call it this year

I'd love to get Mario.

I suspect opposing coaches will let the refs know about this in pre-match discussion.

Was able to attend today and figured I would share a few thoughts:

Tournament I thought was ran well. Ran straight through with no breaks and 9 mats. 6 mats in one gym and 3 mats in another which usually I'm not a fan of, but with a one day tournament I think it's necessary to have that many mats. Not a ton of seating but there weren't that many spectators so there was enough room. If your a fan of wrestling I would recommend making the trip. ( Would have made it better if a few PSU guys decided to wrestle ). Now on to the wrestling:

125: Kilkeary had a few matches he just didn't look himself, and a few matches where he looked lights out. Wearing a shoulder brace so not sure if he is entirely healthy or its precaution. Dillard wrestled extremely well and I honestly thought he was gonna knock off McCrone, and Lawson from Clarion about knocked off Kilkeary. Both were great matches. I always take matches between teammates with a grain of salt due to familiarity.

133: Again with the teammate matches but both Davino and Bouzakis looked good. I was excited to see Davino and he put up double digit points in every match except for his finals with Bouzakis. Match of the weight I think was Camacho of Edinboro (former Pitt) and Johnson of Clarion, high scoring event and a lot of action. The last period or so wasn't as great, Johnson got his bell rung on a mat return and didn't look right after. Side note, I was able to see a young kid come up to Bouzakis and say hi, Bouzakis introduced himself and had a conversation for a minute or two before going back to cheering on a teammate. Was pretty cool to see him entertain the youngin.

141: When I seen the brackets there was the big 3; Mendez, Stanich and Lemley. Mendez is fast as ever, crisp, and looks really good. A friend of mine who made the trip with me made the comment "watching him in person, its hard to believe Bartlett beat him last year". Lemley and Stanich cruise to the semis and that was a great match. Stanich wins in OT by escaping and preserving the riding time advantage. Listening to the crowd, I would say pretty much everyone was watching that match. Not sure if Stanich takes the redshirt this year or not, but its hard to put either of them in the same tier with Mendez after Mendez majors Stanich in the finals.

149: D'Emilio looks good. One of the names I heard most through the crowd was TrFr Kade Brown. Had a heck of a match with Cooper Hilton (high school sr from TN commited to Michigan). Hilton ended up getting hurt and I hope it's not serious. He's currently ranked 8th in the country at 150. I think Michigan will be pleased with him in the coming years. Back to Brown, makes a run to the finals and loses to D'Emilio 5-1. I heard or read somewhere Brown won the wrestle off in the room with last yeras starter Solomon but not sure if that is true or not. From what I seen today, I believe it. Will be interesting to see what Gavin does there and see his progress through the year.

157: Match of the weight was Burgess from Buffalo and Mattin from Michigan. Burgess gets taken down pretty quick in the first. As hes escaping, he catches a cement mixer and puts Mattin on his back (he was stuck) for a 6pt move. Mattin is able to fight off his back and comes back to tie the match but Burgess ices it late in the third. Herman pinning Herrera Rondon from Clarion (former Oklahoma) so quick in a dump was a bit of a surprise and he goes on to win it.

165: Brignola from Lehigh looked tough. Beat Mantanona 8-6 in the finals after teching his way to the finals. The two I figured would be wrestling were.

174: Not an extremely tough weight, but get used to the name Mario Hutcherson. As a 15 year old freshman, he goes into a college open and goes 2-2 to take 4th. Found out that Sam Star who he wrestled in the quarters, went to the same high school (Kiski Area) that Mario currently attends. Watching him go against a few of these guys, I would say he was a bit undersized (understandably so) but never really got "horsed" around. The match with Joe Walker from Michigan was probably the only match where he was noticeably outmuscled. In the 4 matches I watched, I think that was the only one I could confidently say he never threatened to score. This is one I hope Cael and co try to land. Congrats young man for trying to seek out the best competition you can find at such a young age. I heard quite a few times through the stands about the "high school freshman".

184: Unsure who Carson Thomas is. Tried to ask a few people sitting near me but nobody seemed to know. I put his name in Track and a high school senior came up in Ohio. Not sure if its the same one or not. If anyone was there that can shed light on this that would be great, but he only lost to Jaden Bullock from Michigan 2-1. Welsh looked good. Still strong, stingy, and hard to score on. He also wrestled unattached. What I gathered from that is no everyone who wrestles unattached is redshirting since he already redshirted if I'm not mistaken. Could this be a weight thing since he preregistered at 74 and actually wrestled 84 so he wrestled unattached to save something? I'd imagine a weigh in is a weigh in regardless of roster status so that was a stupid question.

197: Beard looked really good. Absolutely controlled Schumate from tOSU in the semis but I was surprised when he wreslted Geog tOSU in the finals it was that close 7-5. I hope Beard makes it further up the podium this year, just one step down from whoever gets the nod from Cael.

285: Feldman is an absolute freight train. Admittedly, I did not see him in person last year, but I can say I heard a lot of comments on how muscular he was. His shots were quick along with his finishes. Granted he wasn't wrestling top competion (all due respect to the wrestlers) besides Taylor Lehigh who was one match short of AA honors last year. His double and low ankle attacks were textbook. Interested in seeing him go against guys that can match his athleticism like Kerk, Hednrickson, Bastida and Keuter.

Overall like I said, well run tournament with some great early season matches and storylines. Patiently waiting for us to take the mat now.

Carson Thomas is a HS senior from Cincinnati LaSalle. I think he's top 2 or 3 in the country at 189.

Thanks for taking the time to write all that up @Junglekitty, incredibly useful info!

To comment on Rocco Welsh of tOSU, he does have a redshirt as last year was his true freshman year. I believe he started out redshirting but had it pulled after Kharch was injured.

well, we now that Hardwork830 must be a family member or dad of Hutcherson, lol. Not sure what to make of those results though. Confusing because he was a DNP at S32, and just got beat by a non-ranked kid from PA? Or does this show that HS kids are hitting a different level, when tournaments at your own age group are tougher than college opens? I think it was posted earlier that 174 was not very strong at all, but still not a bad result for a true FS. He is physically mature for his age, which helps. Still think Pitzer was better at that age/weight tho.

These are great. Thanks for sharing.

looking through the results, Ohio State took over. Davino is a killer, Mendez is starting to seperate vs other top wrestlers- he was trying to destroy Stanich. Wish we had those two and Feldman.

You are correct he did not place at S32, and I'm assuming you're talking about Brian Heard as the non-ranked kid from PA. Brian Heard took 5th last year at 172 AAA. He's committed to UPenn. Tried to find current state rankings but could not find any recents. The last ones I could find had him at 5 in the state and 21 in the country.

I'm not trying to defend Hutcherson or make him out to be more than he is at the moment. I think sometimes when people start talking about high school kids wrestling in college opens, they immediately start comparing them to Bassett, Forrest, and Blaze, which is a little unfair. Those 3 are so far beyond their years in wrestling that they can compete with top guys in college. But lets not forget that both Bassett and Forrest lost to two high level high school kids within the last year or so. Thats not knocking them for their accomplishments which are extraordinary, but rather noting that sometimes matches play out differently how everyone is expecting. Both Bassett and Forrest went on to avenge those losses.

From watching Hutcherson compete, I think he went in to that tournament expecting to win. That was the first time I've seen him wrestle in person. I watched him warm up, wrestle, and afterwards. He didn't seem nervous, and handled his losses and wins the same. He didn't seem to get frustrated at all during his matches. I thought he would have wrestling the Michigan kid after getting pushed out twice for stall calls, but he just went back to the center. Outside of maybe the guys in his corner, and himself, I don't think anyone was expecting him to win it. I think he just wants to wrestle the best guys he can find, and lets the chips fall where they may. Thats a guy I want on my team. He has just competed in his first college match before wrestling in his first official varsity match. He won two matches against guys that have been training in a D1 program for however long those guys have been in college. Without going through the brackets and looking up what each of his opponents age is, I'm assuming he's atleast 4 years younger than everyone he just wrestled.

I think Hutcherson has the potential to be a multi time state champ. Could he have already peaked? Possibly. But I think his desire to wrestle the best competition whenever he can is going to continue to make him better. Add in the fact that he's in the best wrestling state in the nation, in one of the toughest areas, and thats a recipe for success. It will be interesting to follow his high school career and see how he pans out.

Thank you for this. Just looked and Flo has him ranked 2nd at 190 behind Harvey Ludington from NJ. Ludington is committed to Arizona State and Thomas committed to Indiana. Interesting note, the first PA guy on the list is Elijah Brown at 15. A JR from Belle Vernon committed to Pitt.

Is there a weight allowance at the NWCA Classic? Welsh is scheduled to wrestle Haines at 174 in just a few weeks.

Welsh was listed at 174 in the preseeds, so he was likely registered there. It is possible he just wrestled 184 because 174 was so weak. The kid who won it is a career backup for Michigan. The kid who took 3rd went 0-2 at NCWA regions last year. At 184 he knew he would at least get to wrestle Bullock.

Whoa whoa whoa. Not at all but I do remember he had a family member comment on this board before who is a diehard Penn State fan just like I am. I follow PA middle school and high school wrestling hard. I love PSU wrestling and this forum. I think in that freshman class in PA Hutcherson, Bachmann, Wenrich, Hoare, Karenbauer, and Bassett are the cream of the crop. I believe Hutcherson is the best upper weight and Bachmann best lower weight. I have a friend who is tight with his dad and his high school coach. So am I biased, maybe but the kid is tough. Pitzer was and still is no doubt about it. I am also wpial biased.

Hutcherson is a must add. Kid went 2-2 at Clarion open as a freshmen. That’s crazy at his weight.
