George Chaump passes

Is this the guy who had a long time ongoing feud with Joe? Or am I thinking of another central Pa coach?
Things got rocky with Jeff Weachter at Bishop McDevitt after the LeSean McCoy situation; that might be what you’re thinking of. Chaump was still sending players to Penn State to play for Joe at Harrisburg (including big Brandon Ware), and I don’t believe there was any sustained bad blood there either at Harrisburg or Central Dauphin.

Chaump was a legend and will be missed. That fraternity of fantastic high school coaches in central PA from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s is largely gone now.

Was it the guy from Williamsport?

I think you are referring to George Curry of Berwick , George Chaump coached in college at OSU and others , in the pros for Tampa Bay, was HC for a Pa conference school, Marshall U and Navy before going back to HS.

I don't think Weachter and Joe ever had a problem though it's true Weachtner thought PSU should have offered more McD kids including Jeremy Ricker, Jamie Thomas and Matt Johnson. The few McD kids who ended up at PSU did not necessarily work out so Joe may have known best (though Johnson would have been a star at PSU IMO). The McCoy era at McD was coming to an end at the same time Joe broke the news to the family that Shady was not only not going to be attending PSU the following fall but would not be playing for any school. Within a month or so after that LeSean left McD for Milford Academy. To his credit, he and McD mended fences and he is now an ambassador for the school and pays tuition for a few kids, most of whom are not athletes.

Is Mickey Minnich still around? Last I heard, he was doing some very good charity work.

Minnich produced champions at John Harris (then Harrisburg) and a second great run at Steel-High.

Was introduced to George at spring ball about 2009....don't think he had a beef with Joe. They were part of a cordial conversation.

Last I heard, Minnich is still running the charity he founded in honor of his late wife. I don’t believe he has too much involvement with the Big 33 anymore.
