Gerrit Cole traded to Houston

Everyone wants to be first. Nobody minds if they're wrong.
Yep, and from what I'm hearing the guy that "broke" the story is now nowhere to be found. And Ken Rosenthal apologized for running with it on MLB Network. Now there still might be something to it, but wouldn't surprise me if it was over zealous speculation.

I hope it’s true. Bucs are in serious need of a roster restart.

What, so they can repeat the same unsuccessful, painful process of failure again? The Pirates’ problem isn’t so much the roster, it is cheap, incompetent management who failed to add to a very good core when it had a window to do so.

That window slammed shut after 2015 season when they did nothing. They very well may repeat the same process again, but that’s better than trying to move forward into 2018 with this piss poor roster and ending up with nothing to show for it. Nutting sucks as an owner.

Which actually makes them worse. Spending money in pursuit of futility makes them not only bad but foolish. That is not to defend the Pirates organization. The are pathetic.

You're probably right...personally, when you rebuild and make the playoffs but refuse to add a piece or two because you're cheap that's worse. Cleveland tries to win--they just fail miserably.

Nice summary by ESPN. I actually like the trade as it looks like the Pirates got a decent pitcher as well as a possible 3rd baseman. Didn't notice the ages of the 4 players they got, but am assuming that they are young. Cole, so far in his career, only had 1 outstanding year, and he really did not seem to be able to utilize the great "stuff" that he has as a pitcher. So far. But many pitchers only really bloom in mid career. I will miss Cole's firry demeanor and his competitiveness......

40 franchises in the four major sports have gone longer without winning a championship.

The Pirates have never won a title with this ownership group. 1979 (I wasn't even 1) has nothing to do with this organization in 2018.

Again. I believe any other team would try to add pieces when they were close. Every team. I can't think of one that wouldn't. The Clippers try. The Browns try they just have poor personnel guys. Even the Marlins try once in a while.

I'm OK with it, but I wonder what the Yankees really offered. Would have liked to get Frazier.

Though I've never been a big fan of Cole and am not sorry to see him go, this is sort of discouraging. I'm beyond being pissed off at what they do these days because I highly doubt they'll compete within their division in the foreseeable future, much less win a pennant. Far too many under performing prospects (see Marte, Polanco) and then there was Kang. The window has closed tight and was open for far too short of a time. They have once again lost their fan base.

Totally agree. I’m a little surprised Hurdle and Searage decided to work 4 more years of what is left of their careers working for this shitful owner. Sickening.

I didn’t say they did. You made the claim they were the worst. That is an absolute statement. I provided a fact that showed many other teams have failed for longer at the actual goal. It is on you to provide facts to back up you r claim.

Even in that timeframe there have been worse. Fewer with that restriction.

They aren’t close.

WTF are you talking about? The worst run franchise in sport is an opinion. Nothing factual about it. The last time a team win a title doesn't have anything to do with what they are doing today. See the Marlins.

As of this moment, I believe that the Browns ownership cares far more about trying to win games and is more willing to spend the money to do so. 0-16 or not they want to win. Pirates ownership just wants to make a profit. More power to them but, as a fan, it will driver you away.

The Pirates weren't close when they made this deal. They were close in 2015 and refused to spend

This is interesting not because of THIS deal but what it potentially means for them next season with their ace. What does this mean for Big Beard after next season?

You know you're having a tough year when your 'ace' has a 4.50 era. Cole was an inning eater, but he gives up way too many long balls. He strikes out eight and gives up three three run homers per game. I'm not upset that they traded him; I'm upset that they literally got nothing for him. Moran is known as an error machine at third, I doubt we get five quality starts from Musgrave and Feliz combined. Martin might be something down the road...he can really run, but can he hit? Meh...

Yeah, I don't mind trading Cole...I have an issue with not getting fair value which scouts all seem to agree that we (yes, we) didn't

Cole is a slightly above average SP and Pirates got back slightly below average players in return. Oh well...in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter because Pirates aren't competing with the Cubs and Cards in the next few years anyways. At least when I go to a couple of games this year, it wont be too crowded and the ballpark is sweet.

Cole is much closer to a stiff than a star.

There is virtually nothing about his game that I like. He throws hard yes. But he throws a flat ball that doesn't move. Sometimes he throws it past batters, but a lot of times he gets the drop on guys two strikes, and can never put them away. Batters time up the fastball and since it doesn't move they can foul it off or wait him out for a walk, or wait for a meatball and rip it.

Cole is a big guy but he is way too heavy and not in good shape. He was healthy this year but this is why he was hurt last year and missed half his starts. That extra 30 lbs is going to catch up with him and better with somebody else than with the Bucs.

I could live with all that stuff, but what I can't live with is that he's heartless. Best example was in Fenway on opening day. He's into the sixth pitching well, he had given up only one run. He gets two outs and somebody gets a double. Next batter bounced a grounder and the fielder booted it for runners at the corners. Cole gets upset, starts walking around the mound, you can tell he's cracking. Instead of striking the next guy out, he gives up three straight doubles and that's the ballgame.

The wild card game against the Cubs - you knew he would never give the Pirates a chance against Arrieta. Four runs in five innings. Just what you want from your ace.

I have no idea if the return is any good, my guess is these are Plan C guys, but it doesn't matter. First losing Cole is neutral at worst, and second, the Pirates are so puny who cares? They can lose with him or without him.

The Pirates wanted Cole to "pitch to contact"...that wasn't the right game plan. We'll see what happens in Houston. I'm not saying he's a star but in a pitching starved sport we didn't get a good return if the scouts are right

Well if I go to see the pirates it will be to see a good team they play like years ago. Tickets will be cheap on stub hub. Pirate owner doesn't care about winning. It's about making money. The state just gave Bob 1 million to bail his a $$ out on his ski resorts due to the jobs that would be lost if closed. Joke What minimum wages? Bob is a horrible owner at 49 I doubt I will ever see the Pirates in the series. Sad. The other 2 Pittsburgh teams have brought home championship in recent years. It's hard being a pirates fan. I know what it's like to be a Browns fan now. That's sad.

Everything at Seven Springs is done on the cheap. It's all right, but every corner that can be cut, is cut. Very poor value for the money you spend.
