Getting to know Penn States next hammer: Alex Facundo

Thanks for posting. Wonder what the short-term future holds for the young man. He has choices, including a delayed enrollment year. We are very young between 165 and 285, inclusive.

I think greyshirt has been mentioned on this board.
As a possibility, yes. Not much more. I'm of the opinion he delays the start of school too. It would be interesting to hear Facundo's thoughts, though it is early.

The least disruptive path lineup-wise would be Facundo grayshirts 2022, redshirts 2023, and the Brooks Olympic shirts 2024.

After that, somebody will have to sit in 2025. Or maybe somebody can go on an overseas mission.

Of course there may be additional future lineup complexities -- for example, PSU is a finalist for Rylan Rogers, Bennett Berge, and presumably Carson Manville, all three in the 182-189-195 range.

Sanderson mentions "one of the recruits" possibly going out to the OTC next year in this most recent interview. I have no idea who but I guess Facundo would be a good guess.

PSU's only commits in 2021 are Steen, Van Ness, and Facundo. No 2022 commits yet.

Of those 3, Facundo would make the most sense. Can't imagine being sole-sourced at 125, and likewise hard to imagine Van Ness moved to State College in order to move to Colorado Springs a few months later.

Serious question... how much better could training at OTC be than just training at NLWC? Are there other advantages?

@Johnbrooks would be a good person to ask about this. Obviously I can't say for sure but seeing how Snyder and Aaron came out of the OTC as "true" freshman ready to contend for titles, it's obviously effective (obviously you'd expect the OTC to be)

All in all, I view it as a fantastic opportunity to train with so many different people and get so many different perspectives from some of the best coaches around. Our wrestlers will have the next several years to learn from the NLWC and maybe years after that also.

Actually forgot about AB going there, and of course KingKyle went there for his Sr year right?

I’m pretty sure Cael wants all his wrestlers to put no limits on themselves. So, being your best and hoping that’s enough for 4 NCs should be everyone’s goal on the team. James English was hoping for one NC in his first (?) NCAAs, and it was not too soon. :)
I was referring to the DT “only 2“ joke. Cmon dog, you know me 🤪

Plus there's a lot to be said for altitude training.

The high-altitude conditioning itself doesn't last very long after returning to sea level. But learning how to push thru that does.

Ah yes! I misunderstood. That does still burn. I still feel awful for Shak, Morgan, Mark, Cassar, Altons, et al., and what more they could have accomplished if only ... :)

One good thing about the OTC is that he’d be exposed to a lot of different styles. Guys on the Mongolian national team, etc., regularly come through. And, coaching by KJ, which obviously didn’t hurt Brooks.

What I’ve noticed about Facundo is that he appears to have a low attack rate. A year of Freestyle might help him develop a better offensive game.

Hall spent time at the OTC too. Didn't look up his exact comments, so I'll paraphrase.

Mark wanted to challenge himself, and knew OTC was the place. Early on he said he was getting beat pretty badly, but always had that little voice saying forge ahead, this will be great in the long run as I'll be much better for it.

It's interesting that winners are never afraid to lose. Searching out great competition is a hallmark of wrestlers that want to improve.

If AB gets up to a true 86kg for the 2024 Olympic trials, he's going to have a hard time making weight down at 184.

There's a reason Myles Amine went 197 this year.

Do you think Beard is going to wrestle in college for all the eligible years he has left? Cassar didn’t use up all his eligibility right? I could see the same for Beard.

Obviously circumstances can always change but I don't think Michael agreed to a Greyshirt then a Redshirt to not wrestle all his eligibility in college.

Based on what exactly?

And remember that Cassar got a couple extensions. He won the title in his 5th year, had his 6th cut short due to injury, and had a 7th available to him.

Cassar thought about not using the 6th year just because he could go out on top (with the guys he started with also) but I think he wanted to help the team defend the title and also show that he didn't just catch lightning in a bottle.

After he got injured and it was a lengthy rehab, it was obviously time to move on.

True enough. Just no idea why Beard would be even hypothetically thinking of truncating his career.

Same, that was just unfounded speculation to be honest. You can say the same about anyone then. I never fathomed that Beard could possibly get pushed out of the lineup but when Facundo committed, it was possibly someone would likely be in the upper weight but not necessarily.

Brooks ability to redshirt still + olympic redshirts can really allow them to balance the lineup later but you know Cael will continue to seek to add talent regardless of what he already has in the room.

Wonder what that sort of logic and deductive reasoning would look like on HR lmfao. Never mind wouldn't happen lol
