Gilman chased Suriano around the mat

Maybe Gilman could listen to the words of one his own Hawkeye newspapers:

  • Thomas Gilman got the win at 125, which preserved his undefeated season, but he had his hands full with Suriano, a true freshman who's more than lived up to the hype so far. Gilman talks a big game about attacking and taking it to his opponents, but he's had a tendency to wrestle more reserved against top tier competition. If he wants to be looked at as one of the top guys in the sport this year, he needs to keep taking it to opponents and looking for points. Suriano was the clear aggressor in the third period and only some very impressive defense from Gilman was able to prevent the freshman from scoring a possible match-winning takedown. Suriano should leave this match with plenty of confidence for potential rematches at the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments -- I'm not sure Gilman can say the same.

Agree with the article that Gilman was not evenly remotely dominating as his words, but disagree with the article regarding this massive confidence that Suriano should have that he was on the cusp of winning when the clock expired either imho. I think the characterization of Gilman's defense is fair - "and only some very impressive defense from Gilman was able to prevent the freshman from scoring a possible match-winning takedown." - IOW, I really didn't see anything from Nick that looked like he was all that close to defeating or even denting Gilman's near impenetrable neutral defense (conversely, Gilman - as little as I like him and his BS attitude - he did record a very "clean TD" once he got comfortable and decided to fire.....IOW, we already know Gilman can penetrate Nick's D.). Regardless of how you slice it, Nick likely needs to hold the TD advantage to beat Gilman - even if it is 1-0 again....it has to be in Nick's favor imho. Not saying Nick can't beat Gilman, because it is clearly close enough that he could, but Nick has some work to do in regards to his "neutral attacks" if he's going to break the code on Gilman's neutral defense imho.

Yes. It is clear what Nick needs to do, but the point was that despite what Gilman said, even a homer paper could see what was really going on.

And Nick very definitely can see a light at the end of a tunnel. He will be able to reach him. Defeat before Gilman graduates? Maybe not. But I think he will get better.
