Going to DC tomorrow and then Baltimore! Safe????

I agree, he
Christ, I really hope you are just yanking peoples chains here...otherwise grow a set of nuts.

Here's some basic advice for all cities...stay out of the slums.

Baltimore and DC are great places to visit with the family. Just use your head...

I agree, he must be kidding right?

Amicci's is very good.
My personal favorite is Chipparelli's its awesome...

Now that I think about it @psuunc34 I highly recommend a side eating trip to Little Italy. Its walking distance and safe and a nice walk.
and here's the kicker your kid will probably love Vaccaro's and not just the youngun I'm willing to bet everyone will love it.

times in life you would like to have back. We traveled over to Baltimore to mess around and went to Chipparelli's for dinner. I am usually wanting sea/bay food when there, but I told my wife this would be good. ( IIRC Rico is a nephew, I saw him wrestle as a 9th grader, wow) anyway we go and have this great meal, come out and are just kind of walking around on a beautiful evening. We notice some guy sitting on a chair on the sidewalk doing sketches. We go over and start to BS with him. He was very proud of his work, and he should have been. We talk some more, and he whips out an newspaper with one of his sketches , and he is so proud as they used his name on it!! He said it was the first time. Any way, he tells us he is Tony DeSales, and you could tell he was going to good. Why on earth I didn't buy one of his sketches right then and there and had him sign it, I have no idea. I soon as I get to my car and drive off, I knew I missed an opportunity. This was probably 20 yrs ago. Any way I think Tony has done pretty well for himself.

I've seen a lot of his work around town and its very good.

If any of you know DC or are police officers, etc. What do you think about the safety right now? I am going with my wife and 4 yr old. We had plans for a few months. In DC, we are around Chinatown at the Renaissance Hotel.

We would then go to Baltimore Sunday-Tue. Again, do you think it is safe? Any Baltimore police officers?
Any help would be appreciated! In B-more, we are staying right at Inner Harbor @ the Renaissance. Thank you!

Work in DC; you'll be fine. Chinatown is busier than other parts of the city but it's not NYC or anything. Spy Museum is there, as is the ever popular Chinatown metro stop (Metro Center is not far away). You can get on the Red Line there to go to the zoo (in a great part of the city - no worries there). There are lots of good restaurants and shops nearby too, and if you want any recommendations let me know (knowing your budget helps too). Was just in Baltimore last weekend at the Aquarium (easily worth the hefty price tag) and also had zero issues. The eating options weren't ideal (very crowded places and average food/service at otherwise pretty well known establishments) but I'm not a local and don't know about better local choices.

If anything comes up, let me know - always happy to help.

Two of the most crime infested centers in the U.S., and also two urban areas that it is very difficult to obtain a carry permit for self defense. I'd advise you to avoid them both!

Midnighter, be careful out there bro. It's a jungle.

?....wow. You know there are people who actually live and work in the areas that you are asking for a security screen on?

Your original request came off as fearful, a tinge racist and IMO insulting to those of us who live, work and raise families in these cities.

Don't be afraid, just get out there live it and have a good time, man. Nobody's going to hurt you and you're not going to be caught in a riot. If your up near the Zoo have dinner at "Lebanese Taverna" you will love it. When you're in Baltimore, stay away from the Harbor. It's not Baltimore. It's is a beat up, used up, plastic tourist enclave. It is anything but the real Baltimore. Go to Hamden, Canton, Roland Park, Bolton Hill or any other neighborhood. THAT is Baltimore.

I have been to DC and Baltimore a few times. Normally, I wouldn't ask about the safety. I am not sure how my asking about the status of the cities is racist. There is a lot of anger right now. Today there will be a verdict about a police officer involved in Freddie Gray's death. I wouldn't be surprised if anger erupted. I know a lot of people on here live and work in Baltimore and DC, so I figured I would ask the people who have the pulse of the cities.

Thank you to everyone for their help and suggestions, especially BBrown!

Your welcome.
I'm not sure any of us know what to expect with the verdict. My guess is its going to go the same way as the previous 2. I think the Judge has already thrown out one of the charges and he asked a very pointed question to the prosecution that they couldn't answer. In a nut shell the prosecutor said this should have been a foreseable event (Gray being injured) The Judge asked the Prosecution "How"? and they did not have an answer.
With all the new stuff thats happened in the last 2 weeks its a crap shoot to how the people will respond.
I still think you'll be fine in the Harbor area and I wouldn't let it stop me from that trip to Little Italy.
One other suggestion that you might like is taking a Water Taxi to Ft. McHenry.
Its going to be steamy out today so be prepared.

Thank you! So you think the zoo would be ok? Also, I just saw that the trial for the police officer in B-more is ending Monday when I am supposed to be there. That really worries me. Thoughts?
Which zoo? Baltimore or National. I have been to both. No problems. Both are excellent. But, as always, it is worth being careful of the route you take. Note that while the National Zoo is free, parking is not--and is quite limited. It can be worth getting a zoo membership for the free parking and discounts.

Its as safe as any American city. Washington is probably safer because it is under heavy surveillance and protection because of its status.

Frightening stuff. Hopefully you are keeping a spot free of clutter under your bed so that you will have a place to hide from suspect noises.

Dangers you might encounter near the DC Zoo:

1. Getting run over by an oblivious jogger running the main zoo path

2. An accidental scalding by an overzealous barista

3. A look of withering disapproval from one of the withered Grand Dames of DC society that haunt the restaurants near there.

GO! Live your life. I compare your question to those who won't fly because they aren't in control and fear an accident (not those afraid of heights and such). Studies prove your chance are far greater to be harmed in an auto accident or even struck by lightening. Think of the odds of being in the middle of some random event.

Just be sensible and cognizant of where you are during a specific time. We just hit Baltimore in March and had a wonderful time. The harbor and downtown area is awesome. You will enjoy it.
