Gotta believe Drew was not himself this weekend.

Did Drew even give up a takedown during the B1G Regular Season? He just did not look like himself - he's an elite defensive wrestler and scrambler (as he showed against Suriano in Reg Season). Then there was the MFF in the 9th Place match Final. Anyone heard anything on this topic?

I was looking at this a short time ago. He lost to McKee, who took 3rd and who beat him in last year’s NCAA 3rd place bout. And he lost to DeAugustino, who took 4th. I’m convinced he beats DeAugustino in regulation if not for being called for a technical violation.

I agree he looked a little tired. I thought the same if everyone not named Nick Lee and Brady Berge. I think they look tired every year in Big Tens.

I think he’ll be fine and I don’t think his seed will suffer too terribly much for it. Maybe 10-12 instead of 5-7.

As for the MFF… I think he skipped a meaningless match. No team points for it, allocation already awarded. And I think we should be careful for calling out others for doing it.

Don't disagree completely, but it was the way he lost to DeAugustino that surprised me more so than losing. I didn't see match (don't have B1G+), but it sounded like he got dominated pretty good and couldn't even ride DeAugustino. Not wrestling the 9th Place Final was pretty surprising as well (another win on his record there would have helped his seeding, so not wrestling tells me he was under the weather).

What was the technical violation?

No. He didn’t get dominated. It went to SV. He had riding time, I believe. A technical violation point made it go to OT. I did PBP on it in another thread.

: ) I've read numerous posts regarding it, but so far no one has noted what it was.

Here was my PBP:

125 QF: D Hildebrandt (“DH”) vs M DeAugustino (“MD”)

DH stalking as per usual. DH the noticeably larger wrestler. DH shoots, but easily defended by MD. Not alot of action, just hand fighting. DH more aggressive. They’re not calling a lot of stalling from what I’ve seen. 0-0 after one.

MD takes bottom. MD gets to feet. DH aggressively tries to return, can’t but they go OOB. Happens a 2nd time but no stalling called. Two cautions on top (DH) now. Careful Drew. mad up again and DH returns him. They go OOB. Only 32 secs expired. MD up again and again. DH struggling to ride him. OOB. There might have been stalling called on DH. MB up again. Again OOB. 0:59. MD up again. Technical violation on DH gives MD a point. 1-0 MD. MD almost gets reversal but they go OOB. No change in control. MD up again and this time gets an escape. 0:28 to go. 2-0 MD.

DH takes bottom down 2-0, with two cautions and I think a stall warning. Gets reversal 15 secs in on standing switch. OOB. 2-2. Riding time is 1:18. DH able to keep MD down this time but OOB with 1:33 to go. There was an earlier stall warning on DH. MD up and out. 1:24 to go. 3-2 MD. Riding time is 1:36 for DH. DH half shot. Nothing. MD not doing much. MD called for stalling with 20 secs to go. 3-3 after regulation.

MD shoots… and finishes. MD beats DH 5-3 in SV. The technical violation was the difference.

Must be thinking of McKee match - do you remember how scoring went in DeAugustino match?

Gotcha. Yeah - the McKee match was a little one-sided.

we can agree to disagree on the 9th place match. I had posted before it that there didn’t seem to be a reason to wrestle it for him. It would have added a W for win pct, but it wasn’t an opponent that would otherwise help much, I think in seeding.

Saw your post below with p-b-p. -- thanks, appreciate it. I know what struck me -- B1G played a replay of DeAugustino's takedown in their Session 1 coverage. DeAugustino looked like he hit the takedown pretty early in SV1 and finished it pretty quickly and easily. Also, given the limited number of matches he has, the 9th Place Final match would have helped his seed if anything - if he was 100%, I think he goes.

I just re-watched the match. The penalty point assessed against Drew was for an illegal cutback. I have seen that called several times this year. Carter came close to doing one against Massa in the final. RBY also likes to do something similar. If you leave your feet to do the move they are going to call you. There seems to be an emphasis on calling it recently. Here is the applicable section. I was unable to include the photos from the Rulebook: No. 44—ILLEGAL CUT BACK. Wrestlers are not allowed to use their leg to execute a cut back, regardless of whether the hand is being used. Nos. 45 and 46—ILLEGAL REAR STANDING DOUBLE KNEE KICKBACK. A wrestler shall not leave their feet to block behind both of their opponent’s knees with one or both of their legs, feet or shin bones. Both photos demonstrate an illegal double knee kickback because the wrestler has left both feet in order to collapse behind the knees of the opponent.

Yeah - it's the right application, dumb rule but they are enforcing it more. Drew doesn't do that and he is up at the end of the 3rd (obviously DeAugustino turns it on and tries to get the takedown)

I still don't get the "leave your feet" part - feet is plural and the way it reads sounds like you're jumping into the back of opponent's knees. Didn't see what Drew did, but what RBY did, we always called a "back trip" - essentially extending one leg across and behind standing wrestler and pulling them backwards across your extended leg. RBY didn't "leave his feet" - he extended his leg.

No offense intended to Drew. I hope he has a great NCAA tourney.

It's a bit annoying that Suriano went to Michigan. Kind of swung the whole thing their way.

Good for them, we wanted him also and we wanted Evan Wick also. Recruiting transfers is part of the game now. Not going to condemn anyone else for doing that when we're playing that game also.

Hell, we would have won if we recruited Austin Gomez also

The 9th place mini tournaments mean one thing only. Qualify for NCAA or not. Or be one position out of qualification.

unlike the other MFF’s these not only affected nothing from a team standpoint, they end up virtually irrelevant to seeding. Why would either kid wrestle the 9/10 match when both are qualified? Tell me the upside since it doesn’t even get listed on a final bracket and wouldn’t be wrestled if not for qualifying criteria?

huge overreaction to his weekend. he had a brutal draw and lost to 2 guys he’d lost to before by the same margins as before. and he won a match against a guy he’s beaten before by the same margin as before. he’s remarkably consistent.

I remember you said "yeah me too lol" when someone said (obviously as a testament to character) he's glad we got Drew instead of Nicky Cornrows. This weekend illustrates why lol.

I'm not condemning Michigan. None of the other guys started at Penn State.
