You still have a ways to go to beat the 2+ million that went to each of the Flyers parades. I went to the second one. Still hard to believe....

I agree sir.

Philly is a great hockey town.

Problem was, their management has let them down now for several decades since their last victories.

I felt their pain when they lost to Chicago, was it, years back?

Pittsburgh will never beat Philly in victory parade numbers and that's no surprise.
Philadelphia has a population of 1.52 million. The metro area has 6.06 million.
Pittsburgh has a population of 305,000. The metro area has 2.36 million.

It was more the percentage of population. The second Flyers parade was 2.3 million. That's over a third of the total population. I've never experienced anything like it.

There was a classic story about that first parade. British guy who was a pilot flew into town late on the day the Cup was won. He woke up the next morning and went out into a sea of people on Broad St. He goes up to a cop and says "I say, can you tell me what's going on here?" Cop: "I guess you've never been to Philly on a Monday before...." Not sure if that's urban legend or not--but a great tale.

No doubt about that. Part of the problem was that they were always "just good enough" to usually make the playoffs and did not have that many good picks. Then they were always trying to find "the last piece" which led to some bad trades and bad free agent signings that tied their hands.

I was in Boston that year when they came back from 0-3 down (my dad's family is from Cape Ann, and we were doing family research). Sadly, I didn't get to see much of the games, as our apt did not have the station for the games, and we were not close to any bars with a TV.

Funniest thing was a huge banner in North Station (near the Arena) which had a Flyers player on it stating "You wouldn't want your sister to date one". Loved it. That's fun rivalry stuff.

Agreed. Years past, LA became Philly West and won a Cup with those cast-offs!

We could argue the point. Philly drew a higher percentage of their metro population but Pittsburgh had higher city numbers. I might add that victory parades are more routine in Pittsburgh (13 in the past 50 years, 6 in the past 25). In Philly, not so much (6 in the past 50 years, 1 in the past 25), so you would expect on those rare occasions when they have one, it would draw more people.;)
Let me say I'm just having some fun. I like Philadelphia, having been there many times. My wife's closest friend lives there. If we can't win a title, I wish it would be Philly. Let's get a Stanley Cup final with both cities, or a Super Bowl, or a NLCS. It would be great fun. Even more so since Pittsburgh would win.:D

Plus they actually have public transit in Philly. In Pittsburgh you pretty have just your car.

Excellent point FairG. This was our 13th parade??? It was estimated the crowd was 650,000 which is more than double the city's population. To match that, Philadelphia would have to draw greater than 3 million people for their 5th Stanley Cup Parade in a 26-year time frame. I won't hold my breath.

That didn't help much, actually. The system was overwhelmed. I went to the second parade and got on in my home town of Warminster, which was the end of the line. The train was so full, kids were sitting in the overhead baggage racks. There were essentially no stops made the rest of the way to Reading Terminal as there was no room to put anyone. There were huge crowds waiting at each stop, though. We were able to make it on the subway to get down to JFK Stadium, where the parade was to end. However, I think getting home we were not able to get on the subway and had to walk up Broad St. back to Reading Terminal. Crazy day--glad I went. One of the few days I skipped out on college classes (I was a freshman at Ogontz at the time).

I don't know but I'll bet they don't make Pittsburgh sucks signs when they do win. Philly is always in Pittsburgh's head....always.
It has been my experience, having spend a lot of time in Philly over the years, that the opposite is true. Philly fans cannot understand why their "little brother" has so much success and they have so little. I mentioned in another post that my wife's best friend lives in Philly and when we visit there here husband is incessant in his anti-Pittsburgh drivel. He passes it off as good natured, and maybe it is, but it is constant. Our last trip we got together with 2 of his friends and they were the same way.

3 scum-of-a-kind fair.

For sure, a LOSING hand!

Agree, Gambit. I was VERY impressed with the turnout in Pittsburgh yesterday. It was reported as being 650,000. Comparing that number to the local population, it is extremely impressive. The Warriors will get more fans turning out today, but the local population here is many times greater, so I think the Pens win on that score.

The other thing that strikes me is that, although hockey may not be the most popular sport, its championship trophy just kicks butt on every other trophy. It is not even close.

I've seen lots of the same. I'm not really invested in pro sports, and my Philly friends know that, but they still don't stop with the anti-Pittsburgh stuff.

Phily fans remind me a lot of Pitt fans.

And it makes sense that Philly fans would react that way. In recent years Pittsburgh teams have been far more successful in winning Championships.

Right. Kind of a crazy comparison. The numbers are too huge. Can't compete in a parade size. Pittsburgh is still a great hockey town- and yes I was one of the 600,000.

We've certainly reached "tortured" status in terms of our pro sports franchises. Even when philly teams show promise, and even with great rebuilding opportunities, the streak of day late and dollar short continues. That World Series was nice but hardly makes up for the rest.

Salary cap destroyed the Flyers, Ed Snider was the Steinbrenner of hockey, he wanted to win and spent money.

Quite the opposite actually, particularly when it comes to pro sports (and especially the Pens).

The Flyers spent WAY too much time trying to recreate the Broad Street Bullies over the decades, while the game itself had moved onto a more skilled style of play. They seem to be doing some good things now, but we'll see.

Rabid, wild fans there though...I honestly believe if the Flyers or Eagles ever win a championship, that city will be in ashes before the parade even ends.

Wait! Are you actually talking about the mid 70s? Those Stanley Cup Titles? How's the last 40 years been as a Flyer fan? Had to suck watching the Penguins become NHL royalty no?

Teenie Weenie Johnny still feeling inferior to Philly. Some things never change.

You're clearly overlooking this beauty:

Royalty? Hardly. Win 5 in a row like the Habs did, more than once, maybe.

They were called "Royalty" on the NBC broadcast. National articles, like the one in USA Today that I have linked, use the term.
"The result is a potentially intriguing final between NHL royalty and the rowdy neighbors next door."
You may not agree. You clearly do not like it. But this is not just coming from Pittsburgh fans.

Oh, and save yourself some grief and do not type the words "Penguins" and "Dynasty" into a search engine, or you may get a headline like this one from USA Today.
Penguins have become NHL's newest dynasty.

Or this one from Fox Sports.
Puck Dynasty: Penguins in historic company after Cup triumph.

Nope, just Crosby Sucks....Are you seriously trying to argue that Pens crowds are more boorish than Flyers crowds? There is no comparison. Stop embarrassing yourself.

Pre-expansion or post-expansion? As I recall, most of Montreal's cups were accumulated in a much smaller league, including when there were 6 teams....
