I see our Junior Greco team just went zero for five with a combined three points scored. I would love to see our Greco guys start seeing some success. It must be demoralizing for those wrestlers to work as hard as they do and not see the results they would like. Rather than being a thread to complain, does anyone have any thoughts on steps USA Wrestling and others can take to turn the ship around? Tom, if you feel this should not be a separate thread but only be a post in the Junior Worlds thread please delete this thread. I was just hoping this topic might get a little more attention as a separate thread, and I thank you for all you do and bring to this Forum.

Maybe they should try immersion. Only speak Greek and Roman during practice. Immersion was effective in my high-school Spanish class.🧐

I must say.....after watching the first 5 matches I was glad it was just sports. If it were real life I would expect that Congress would be passing a resolution offering "Thought and Prayers".

In the words of Jim Croce: "Tomorrow's Gonna Be A Brighter Day" :)

The bottom line is a lack of Greco development opportunities, largely due to a lack of Greco focus in the US.

Exactly ONE college has a dedicated Greco training program (with no folkstyle wrestling) for college undergrads: Northern Michigan. (And note that Greco is not an NCAA sponsored sport, so their only competitions are whatever Greco tourneys they can find -- which isn't a lot, especially during the folk season.)

Some other schools let their guys train Greco in the offseason, or even after hours during the folk season. But any folk training deprograms Greco training -- 6 months of folk regular season does serious damage to 6 months of dedicated Greco.

So we need more dedicated Greco programs at the undergrad level, and more Greco events throughout the year.

That's just at the college level. Willie and others will argue that it needs to start earlier, and I don't disagree but have no idea how to make that happen.

Thanks El-Jefe, All of the factors you mentioned make a lot of sense as to why the United States has struggled in Greco.

Exactly. They start 'em young in Eastern Europe.

GOOD TO SEE THEY WON A FEW BUT I AM A REALIST AND WE ALL KNOW THE USA JUST PLAIN SUCKS AT GRECO!! GO AMOS

What it would take is someone to create a high level Greco only program/facility. That trains from little to large.

Would have to have enough to have tournaments or could send over seas.

Otherwise Fargo isnt and wont be enough. Ever.

I'm going to add why arent we good at Greco to ....

- when is the schedule coming out
- giving out bobbleheads
- does cael know what he is doing with wrestle offs
- annual out of state wrestler who is home sick
- nick lee to 149 (new to the list)
- will tHR ever have a moderator
- is wild turk a JTS alter ego in a marvel universe (ok that's mine)

Glad to see that you went from: "You really didn't expect any wins did you?" To: "Oh....we won a couple?......We still suck" This positivity will get you far in life. Perhaps far enough to fix your ALL CAPS button :)

CALL THEM LIKE I SEE THEM YES MY CAPS IS BROKE ROFLMFAO

Matt Lindland needs to bite the bullet and separate Greco from "USA Wrestling" - there shouldn't be anymore Greco AND Freestyle. No more joint events with Freestyle. You're competing for the same athletes.

The only way Greco in the US gets better is to have guys start younger and with full time dedication.

I'm not saying ostracize Greco. It just needs to be like Judo, Boxing, Soccer, etc. This would give the opportunity for Greco to build its own market. You'd have guys opening schools/gyms just like any other sport, with athletes who want to compete in this style from a younger age and be dedicated.

Also. Bring back Ivan. Even without my above radical proposal, we won a damn Greco World Title with Ivan Ivanov at NMU. His development of those college-aged wrestlers and his impact on the program as whole has led gave us that. And his non-involvement has led us to this point. I'll never understand it.
