Who saw the match? I know I'm bias but I thought Myles got hosed in my opinion and I think away from State College he gets the call Had what I believe was 2 and 2 backs with Nickal damn near pinned but not quite But as I always say nothing more but to keep that flame burning but trust me Nickal know he caught a break
------

I just mentioned on the long NLO thread after Dunke's post that I'm sure Mr. Martin would have his excuses ready. Lo and behold!

He's a great read. Always has an excuse - read the Flo boards after his son's loss to Zahid at Ironman. Sounds like he talks to Ryan all the time - I'm sure there's a lot of eye rolling from coach Ryan during those talks.

as I said in the other thread, stereotypical wrestling dad. yells the whole match, gets pissy when the "crowd" yells that his kid is stalling, and then when the kid loses storms off b!tching the whole way out the portal. Hosed no...he didnt get hosed. There are plenty of examples out there of getting hosed....and this isnt one of them. But this does add to the rivalry and Bos pumping up the crowd after the win, probably put salt in the wound. After getting open hand punched in the face for 2 periods I get where Bo was coming from with the showmanship

PS - you cant get 2 AND 2 if you dont get the original 2....so he should start there.

Mr. Martin said in another thread that he "hated" Happy Valley. Probably hates it even more now.

Here's some more classic excuse-making from Dad:

Somehow I doubt he hated Happy Valley a few years ago when Cael was kicking the tires. Guessing the hate started around the time Nickal committed.

I inferred from context that Centre County was "too country" for Mr. Martin - kind of the Terrelle Pryor attitude.

As everyone knows, Columbus is the Paris of America.

Was he the parent inferring in another post that state college is not a welcome place for African Americans? I remember reading how he said 'trust me' about talking with Ed Ruth's parents about how it's not a good place for him, etc...perhaps I am mistaken, but swear I read something along those lines recently.

I think you're right.

That story never fails to crack me up for a number of reasons, not the least of which: wonder if he bothered asking Campolattano's mom about Columbus.

Add to that: welcoming enough for Mark Hall.

Thought I saw something like that too...They used to say the same thing about Gable BTW.

When Bo was down early the first thought I had was "no, not to Martin!" Cannot stand dude's dad.

I have a feeling I was sitting very close to his dad ..in the 3rd period he was yelling 'make him (Bo) wrestle' ..I kinda said to no one in particular ..'why should he ..he's done pretty much all the wrestling so far' the number and ratio of shots by Bo to Martin was ridiculously lopsided ... but I think that's what Bo has to adjust to now as guys don't really want to 'wrestle' Bo (heard the last time Bo and Martin wrestled that Bo pinned him ..that can make you change your style the next time..lol)

To be fair, Mr. Martin acknowledged later that he was a bit out of line in his initial post in that thread and apologized any for inappropriate comments.

He also stated he was "surrounded by Penn State faithful that was talking all kinds of trash".

Must be the name Martin. Wasn't Mark's dad openly critical of the staff about his son having to cut too much when he beat the kids up 1-2 weights?

I was the score keeper on mat 2 and from 10 feet away it was not a takedown and consequently not 2 near fall. Martin stalled the entire first period and I kept getting ready to write down the stall warning which never came. I was very surprised as the officials were calling stalling fairly consistently on our mat up until that point.

Yeah, that has been his pattern (see, e.g. Flo, Ohiowrestling.net) - make some inflammatory posts and then apologize later.

Amazingly my 10 year old son captured it on video lol but ESPN won't be calling him to work anytime soon lol but he really did a decent job and the commentator (me) was given a pink slip already because most of the times he was saying BS lol but please understand me and my son was surrounded by The Penn State faithful that was talking all kinds of trash and Myles competed all day with NO coach so I was literally just trying to keep him motivated from the bleachers lol So after watching it again several things stick out to me #1 if Myles stayed on his offense early I think it's easy to say his hand would have been raised but I know it's takes sometime to figure that out and he probably respected Nickal a little too much because the last time they wrestled 2 years ago he was man handled and of course that is part of the mental game that will come with confidence Once Myles figured out and puts in his mind that's he's the best watch out but I'm smart enough to know losing in the finals at the Nitttany Lion Open means absolutely nothing in the scheme of things I just keep telling him stay the course #2 he should of committed to riding more because I think he can and #3 as far as the reversal and backs I'm not a expert enough to know if it was or not I'm a football coach lol but I will tell you this it was very close at minimum! MM put folks on notice and thankfully he's in the best room with the best BO in the country!! Iron sharpens Iron!

Further down the thread GM is asked what he thinks about the idea of pulling his son's shirt, and he disagreed, reasoning that the team has too many lineup holes and that Myles isn't mentally there yet.

He's probably not doing Myles any favors by being as candid as he is on a public forum, especially about looming coaching decisions, but he's been going at it for awhile so I guess no one told him to tone it down.

I can see, as a parent, you would want to motivate your kid from the stands because there is no coach. Of course I would be scratching my head a bit wondering why there was no coach.......

Martin is still in redshirt. You can't have a member of tOSU staff in your corner if you are redshirting.

I don't have the entire history of Mr Martin, so perhaps my comments are out of touch. That being said, I think Martin spoke too soon when emotions were high. He has confidence and believes in his son, as all fathers should. I think as fans we can appreciate him throwing his name on his statements and being a part of the "common folk" in the wrestling community.

In regards to the conversation he had with the Ruth family, I don't recall him stating anything about African Americans. It could have been implied and I missed it or perhaps some people just took that leap or I am wrong and my memory is fading....

Myles and Bo are special talents. Best of luck to both.

I studiously avoided mentioning that.

Yeah, okay, I feel bad. One of my best friends doesn't know where the period key is either, and I always resent having to parse his emails like I'm a crime scene investigator.

I would like to see Martin's 10 yr old son's video though. Even at HS matches you see people shooting footage along the mat. I know the NLO isn't a huge tournament, but kind of amazing that there's no footage of at least the finals.

He may have been the same kid who said "fall on him" in their match 2 years ago went Bo went upper-body on him

This is a real gold mine.

Did Penn State's notoriously senior citizen crowd really trash talk him into losing emotional control? How did his 10-year-old kid maintain enough self-control to film the match?

Does his son really need motivation? If so, from the crowds (no coaches, but teammates at matside)? Does he think his son should pay attention to the stands or the opponent during matches?

I find it hard to believe the "trash talk" was anything more than "hes stalling", "make them wrestle", "hes backing up ref", etc. etc etc. The crowd at the NLO isnt your run of the mill central PA rednecks. the gents/ladies giving up their football sunday to watch wrestling in that environment are very knowledgeable, not a bunch of hillbillies. While there is an idiot in every crowd I doubt they were saying anything more than what I already typed.

The idiot in that crowd self-identified.

I hope that hillbully El-Jefe wasn't there yelling:

1) "You need more time in the sun tanning booth!"
2) "What's wrong Martin, the bus ride too long!"
3) "Why the stall Myles...you feeling sick today! Is that your excusssse son!"

I kid, I kid, ;)

You forgot one: AVE-RAGE REFS!! AVE-RAGE REFS!! AVE-RAGE REFS!!

Oh, and I probably wouldn't use the tanning booth joke on Martin. But that's me.

For the life of me I can't figure out how a father can act like this and not feel embarrassed for not only his son but also himself. My kids played ball and I ALWAYS kept my mouth shut even when I had legitimate gripes. I did it because I didn't want it to reflect badly on my sons. That alone was enough to keep me from airing my opinions.

This guy is actually on national forums giving his opinion on actual coaching decisions. I wouldn't do that to a highschool coach let alone to a coach of a national collegiate power in the sport. If you have an opinion on how your son should be handled you do it personally and privately not on some message board. It's a wonder this kids teammates aren't calling him " Daddy's boy" behind his back. They just very might well be. Why would any dad help make that remotely possible. This Mr. Martin gets around. I've read his antics for quite awhile now all over the net. The wrestling community is not very large. When fans are heckling his son, calling him a"Daddy's Boy" during his matches, Mr. Martin only has one person to blame. Poor parenting in my opinion...

The conspiracy theories about Zahid V going for his 4th Ironman title were the best. Everyone has it out for team Martin
