When Ironbird first came over here and started this thread, I thought we were going to get a better version of him than the one seen at GIA. However, he has now evolved into a more extreme, more schtick version than what is portrayed over there. I didn't think that was possible, but, what we are getting now is just intentional foolishness. @IRONBIRD: not sure if you were alive much less followed PA wrestling in the late 60's, but if you were and did, you heard of me. In '69 I was fortunate enough to win it all.
I also coached for a spell and worked at many wrestling camps. Not that any of that makes me an expert but I can assure you that wrestling weaker competition does not make you stronger.

In most cases, you will see teams wrestle against better and weaker competition. That is unless you are unlucky enough to be at the very bottom, or fortunate enough to be at the very top. Also the case for each individual.
However, you seem to be missing many points??? For 1)- IOWA ALWAYS wrestles a TUFF schedule. 2) There is a lot of tradition such as meets with Iowa St. and Oklahoma. There was also Midlands which got screwed up during Covid. 3) IOWA always tries to use its great following to promote the sport. That is why you see some of the competitions that you do.
Now the wrestlers can only wrestle who is in front of them. Would really be even a tougher road to plow if EVERY kid you wrestled was as good or better then you. I guess if you made it till the end of the year? You would certainly be ready!!!
I believe the entire point or argument was about IOWAs lack of competitions though? This is kind of funny coming from people on this board!!!! Also some have said why did certain kids wrestle in a particular meet? I gave a very clear explanation. Several weights had a battle or have a battle going on. Other weights have 1st time starters. There are also new to the program wrestlers.
For these reasons and probably many others, IOWA sent wrestlers to Luthern. I am sure a part of this was also to draw a nice crowd to the event. All this being said, just look at the IOWA schedule then get back to me about COMPETITION!!!!

The young men that wrestle today are in far better shape and far better trained than we were back then. I'm not aware of anyone training year round back then. Could be wrong though.
