One of my favorite college coaches long before we entered the "conference " very good human , Hayden, God Bless.
Met him once at a dinner. He had nothing but praise for Joe. Stood and chatted a while. Very nice person.
Have any actual football coaches ever bashed Joe for the so-called scandal? I can’t recall any. I think anyone who actually knows “football culture” can easily see how BS the mainstream media narrative is.
Outstanding! Thanks for sharing.I met him once and it was funny.
Pregame in 1984 Iowa City. About 10am I was on the field...throwing passes with team managers and cheerleaders. I was not in the Lion suit.
Standing at midfield, I dropped back to the 45 and sent a pass to the far corner of the end zone. It was a pass that left my hand in a way no ball ever did and a way I could never repeat again. My target caught the ball as I stood with my mouth open.
Immediately behind me a voice says “Son, you should be playing for us”. Turning around....it’s Haden Fry.
I have no recollection of my response other than shaking the hand he offered to me.
RIP....one of my coolest memories.
I did not know that.Broke the color line in the SWC while HC at SMU

RIP, Coach Fry.
Fry really went out on a limb. I am sure he was not well received by other SWC schools at the time.I did not know that.
One would think. Thanks for chiming in.Fry really went out on a limb. I am sure he was not well received by other SWC schools at the time.

Bobby Bowden also.Barry Switzer was critical of Joe, saying that there’s no way he didn’t know about Sandusky.

Hayden was one of the best. Not just a great coach, but a great personality. One of the more colorful guys in the sport. And his coaching tree is something else - Kirk Ferentz, Bob Stoops, Bill Snyder, Barry Alvarez, Dan McCarney, Brett Bielema among many others played and coached under Fry and had significant success as head coaches. He'll be missed. One of my favorite college coaches long before we entered the "conference " very good human , Hayden, God Bless.

Barry Switzer was critical of Joe, saying that there’s no way he didn’t know about Sandusky. Maybe some others who worked in the media, but most of the respected coaches (Urbs, Saban, etc) have always praised Joe, and said he was treated unfairly.
That said, Hayden was a great coach that did it the right way. My condolences to his family and the Iowa fans.
