Hayden Fry has passed away

Met him once at a dinner. He had nothing but praise for Joe. Stood and chatted a while. Very nice person.

Have any actual football coaches ever bashed Joe for the so-called scandal? I can’t recall any. I think anyone who actually knows “football culture” can easily see how BS the mainstream media narrative is.

When asked about PSU in the Big 10's addition, he said they should add Nebraska too, always liked Hayden great coach, teacher, and role model.

I met him once and it was funny.

Pregame in 1984 Iowa City. About 10am I was on the field...throwing passes with team managers and cheerleaders. I was not in the Lion suit.

Standing at midfield, I dropped back to the 45 and sent a pass to the far corner of the end zone. It was a pass that left my hand in a way no ball ever did and a way I could never repeat again. My target caught the ball as I stood with my mouth open.

Immediately behind me a voice says “Son, you should be playing for us”. Turning around....it’s Haden Fry.

I have no recollection of my response other than shaking the hand he offered to me.

RIP....one of my coolest memories.

Rest In Peace, coach Fry.

Barry Switzer was critical of Joe, saying that there’s no way he didn’t know about Sandusky. Maybe some others who worked in the media, but most of the respected coaches (Urbs, Saban, etc) have always praised Joe, and said he was treated unfairly.

That said, Hayden was a great coach that did it the right way. My condolences to his family and the Iowa fans.

One of my favorite college coaches long before we entered the "conference " very good human , Hayden, God Bless.
Hayden was one of the best. Not just a great coach, but a great personality. One of the more colorful guys in the sport. And his coaching tree is something else - Kirk Ferentz, Bob Stoops, Bill Snyder, Barry Alvarez, Dan McCarney, Brett Bielema among many others played and coached under Fry and had significant success as head coaches. He'll be missed.

I remember Barry saying that. He said that everybody (on staff at PSU)) had to know. I liked Galen Hall's response at the time. Galen had worked on his staff and made a statement to the effect that he (Galen) didn't know much of the stuff that Switzer was up to while Galen was there. It was a fair counter punch that didn't receive much attention.

When Fry took the Iowa job he wanted to redesign the uniforms to make them flashier. He contacted the Steelers and asked if Iowa could use the Steelers uniforms as a model. They sent him a Terry Bradshaw uniform and basically said knock yourself out. He closely copied the Steelers but had someone come up with an angry hawk instead of the friendly nonthreatening one they used to use. Fry explained, "I told (them) to paint the meanest-looking hawk you could find. We had a jillion hawks around here. When people look at it they don't know what kind of bird that is, then it dawns on 'em. Hey, that's an Iowa hawk. That ain't no Penn State hawk." I always loved that quote I put in bold. He wanted to go flashy, not classic like PSU. R.I.P. Coach Fry; you were one of the good ones.

The one time I break my rule about going to other team's boards--for condolences. A great man.
