The two cousins behind original Joe Paterno statue react to HBO's version

Hollywood’s version of the
Joe Paterno statue caused quite a stir among Penn State fans last weekend.
The two cousins behind the original statue told The Collegian they weren’t approached by HBO before the studio constructed their own version of the statue -- with a couple twists -- for its upcoming film about the former longtime head football coach.
“They can do whatever they want,” Yesid Gomez said over the phone.
Gomez, along with cousin Wilfer Buitrago, put together the original statue in 2001 based off a sculpture by Angelo Di Maria. It was taken down in 2012 during the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case.
“They could have contacted us to maybe make the same sculpture,” Gomez said.
Many fans took to social media to show their displeasure with the changes made to Hollywood’s version of the statue for the untitled HBO Film.
Instead of Paterno raising his hand, triumphantly pointing his index finger and leading his players, HBO’s version version depicts the coach with his shoulders slumped and his hands in his pockets.
Some questioned whether there was a copyright issue preventing HBO from using the exact same design for its film.
However, Gomez and Buitrago, said that wasn’t the case.
“They don’t probably don’t want to create any controversy so that’s why they just create their own,” Gomez said. “All they had to do was make the same sculpture we did many years and that would be better, but theirs doesn’t represent the one we did.”
Gomez suggested the studio could have reached out to him and Buitrago and contracted them to use the recreation of the statue they started working on last year.
The pair said their Kickstarter campaign, which was
reported by The Daily Collegian last August, finished with $5,000 to cast a new statue of Paterno.
However, Gomez said that is $50,000 short.
Gomez said the goal is have their clay model cast in bronze and take it to Beaver Stadium for a game.
He estimated that he and Buitrago have put $25,000 of their own money into the project in addition to the $5,000 they raised last year.
The current location of the original statue is still unknown
