Going to 11
It's been about 20 years since Penn State had a serious threat at HWT, and Kerry McCoy won two titles. Under Cael, there have been no HWT titles and sometimes it looks like that weight class is almost a throwaway. Jon Gingrich, Jimmy Lawson, Nick Ruggear, Jan Johnson ... we'll see about Nevills.

It doesn't seem like Penn State emphasizes this weight class in recruiting. When Kyle Snyder, from next door in Maryland, and Nick Gwiadowski, from next door New York, can dominate that class, I have to wonder what PSU's philosophy is with heavys.

You do know NN's high school national rank?

It has been awhile since I've seen a post miss the mark so badly. Holy mackeral man.

We were #2 for Gwiazdowski. He chose to stay in-state at the time with Popolizio at Binghamton, who he had been working out with for years.

Snyder was committed to 197. He was not being recruited as a heavy by anyone. You think Tan Tom would've spent any money on Haines if he thought Snyder would be at 230 lb in Year 2?

Nevills was the #1 HS heavy in the country. If that wasn't making the weight a priority, what is?

Would you consider 133 and 141 throwaways as well? We haven't had any national finalists there under Cael, either.

Nick will be really good next season if he hits the weights really hard !!!!

A few more things to remember about heavy:

1. You're limited to recruiting HS 220s and 285s. Many of these guys play college football -- including the #1 HS heavy in each of the past 2 years. Several 220s drop to 197 in college -- Cox, Snyder, Boykin, etc.

2. These have been the 2 worst weight classes in PA in the past few years. The only potential All-American talent recently has been Myers, Haines, and Wood. Not much starter talent beyond them, either .. Peck, Rogers, anyone else? 3x champ Rizzo flamed out something awful at Pitt. Gunning was not impressive at states. Robb was, but he's headed to Mercyhurst. Seth Janney and Cole Nye have potential, but they're a couple years away.

If you're gonna go non-resident at 285, you'd better get it right -- because you can't give significant scholarship money to 2 guys stuck at one weight with no roster flexibility.

Nick has high hopes too!! And re. PSU and heavyweight recruiting, we may end up with Seth Nevills too, who's 8th ranked and the highest Sophomore (Junior year coming up). This could end really well for Penn State for the next 7 years. As with all future-looking circumstances, time will tell.

Suriano and Nevills, each the #1 rated recruit in his weight class - the most difficult weights to recruit per Cael - and both top 5 PFP guys, IIRC. Yup, I'll take it.

You do realize that Lawson was an AA in 2015, right? And that Nevills was the #4 overall recruit in his class? That's not bad for a "throwaway" weight class, and may help resolve some of your questions about PSU's philosophy regarding the HWT class.

To me, this is Nick's first year. He spent the first two, injured.
Sky is the limit, the young man has a world of talent, and for the first time will be healthy.
Hopefully a year in the weight room, and he comes out smoking.

I don't mean it's his first year EXPERIENCE wise, he has had two years to absorb everything, and train in the nations' greatest wrestling room with the greatest wrestlers and the greatest coaches, but I mean it will be his first year competing, healthy, and ready to go for a full season and reap the benefits of in season competition. I think Nick will be just fine, and will qualify for Nationals at the very, VERY least....I believe even better things await....he'll hit the ground running for certain.

So, any good info on Nevills recently? Obviously he didnt go this weekend.......so is he still trying to fully heal up from the torn pec and get ready for next year?

I thought I read that Nevills came up against the max age requirement.
Read that.....just never heard any confirmation of that or whether it was health related. Just hope he gets healthy for next year and we see his full potential.

The answer is to know what year Nick was born. Only those kids born in 1996, 1997, and 1998 were eligible to participate this past weekend.

Fritz had two hvy champs in his 6 years and Sunderland had two hvy finalists during his 11 year tenure. Hmm.

In other news God told Anthony Valencia to quit wrestling:
"I feel God is telling me to do something else. Something new. Cuz I keep failing at what I'm doing now and most likely will never achieve."

God's getting a head start on Valencia. He doesn't tell the Goofers to quit wrestling until NCAAs.

I would think that even jamz had to get a chuckle out of that one.

Best one-liner I've seen yet on the internet. Genius.
