the smell of curry. The condo we rent out is on the 3rd and 4th floors and our tenant and her 3 children are getting inundated with the smell when the people below cook with curry. They really love the condo and the 3 minute walk to Briar Woods HS and we'd love for them to stay, but the smell is overwhelming at times. Unfortunately the tenant is too timid to suggest that they try using the stove fan (perhaps they already do).

I know our tenant can try various concoctions in pans placed around the condo, but I'm looking for something less labor intensive and longer lasting such as some sort of unobtrusive air freshener that isn't its own problem.

TIA!!!!!!!

How about some combination of you, or your tenants, let the offenders know that their cooking is permeating the building?

repaint the walls with kilz, call Stanley Steemer to clean and deodorize the carpets...if that doesn't help...rip out all the drywalll, carpet, and air ducts....

So this is a condo? Don't they have some sort of condo regs for situations like this?

Tell them to get a pet skunk.

Good luck. We own a rental condo & years ago leased it to what was supposed to be two H-1B visa holders from India that were in the US on a 8 month IT contract. Long story short they ended up adding 4 more guys to cut costs down without us knowing. And then that summer the parents from India in their full traditional dress came to the US and stayed for 4 months. At one point we estimate there were 9 adults living in our two bedroom rental. After they left we found that there was no way to remove the curry smell. Once it gets into the sub-flooring it's there for good. The cleaning service advised a complete tear down to the studs to rid the condo of that horrible stench

I think I know where this is. And my guess is that 'issue' is one for many folks in Loudoun County. Have heard others say the same thing when looking at places. If it's only when they cook that's one thing, but I've heard at a certain point it becomes permanent (gets into walls, carpet, etc.).

I'm in need of a solution for a recurring issue to help the current tenant and her children. It might come to this draconian solution when we decide to sell. Thank you for your help.

Yup, you're probably familiar with Ryan and Belmont Ridge. You ever go to BRG? Trace was there a couple times recently.

If the occupants of the unit below who are the source of the odor are still there, I'm not sure there is any short term fix other than to get the condo board involved.

You could try odorXit that is supposed to be very good. But as the people keep cooking with it it will just be an ongoing issue. Their apartment will probably have to be treated first to cut down on the source.

I would have the owner/manager talk to them and insist they use the exhaust fans. Get several tenants to all talk to management so they realize it is a serious issue.

May have to put in a better unit that moves more air. Also, where the exhaust exits may have to be rerouted to get air up and away from building. (Some exit out the side and this could allow odor to come in through walls and windows.)

If they refuse to cooperate, fight fire with fire. Drop a vial of skunk scent (available at hunting stores) outside their door! lol

No, but it replaced Johnny Rockets right? I do like the new AhSo restaurant and library they put in even though it really dominates the Brambleton Town Center.

No Blue Ridge Grill is one of the original tenants. It's right next to the theaters.

My girlfriend has the same issue with her relatively new neighbors two doors down. If you don’t like curry it can be a pungent and nauseating odor. On warm days she’ll open up the windows and turn on the fans. If it’s really bad she will dip a Q-Tip in Vick’s Vapor Rub and spread it in her nasal passages or she’ll just come over my place. She’s usually a peace loving dove, but when this happens she becomes very angry.

I don’t like the smell of curry and agree with your assessment 100%. Went to India and the odor is everywhere and permeates everything and everyone!). Nicest people in the world, but could never get used to the curry smell!

Give ServiceMaster a call. Considering they remediate water and smoke damaged properties, maybe they can give you some suggestions how to mask curry odor.

You also might want to look into getting a commercial size essential oil diffuser and load it up with lemon oil to use when the neighbors downstairs start cooking. They're not cheap but if you like and want to keep the tenant it might be a solution.

I bought a Jeep from an Indian couple and it had the curry smell. I went saltwater fishing and left a full box of whole squid in the car for a few days in 90 degree temps and that got rid of the curry smells.

bake some cookies before the open house and you're good to go.
OR....Tripe ....."so so stinky in the bowl… a stinky saturated whiff – that comes when we are portioning it out and spooning it into the bowls – YUM! We try to describe the smell – cow dung, fishy, bad, rotten, Eau de Barnyard – and we would all be correct. The fact of the matter is that the smell of tripe, by its very nature, is sort of hard to pin down. Its “elusive” if you will".

I don't know what state you are in or the rights of the homeowner/tenant but I'd put something like that in their lease. If there are complaints about smells, remediation must take place or tenant contract is voided and tenant evicted. Once that smell gets into the woodwork, walls and carpeting you'll have to do a complete remodel to get rid of it.
