While waiting to wrestle at a district meet in Ohio, the person who was supposed to sing the anthem didn't show. Somebody spread the word that they were looking for someone who could sing it. One of his teammates came in to the practice rooms and jokingly asked if anyone wanted to do it. This young man said why not. He was on Fox and Friends this morning and read a letter from an air force military patriot who was grateful for the young man stepping up.

Double kudos to him! At the CA state tournament finals, one of the assistant coaches for a high school team sang the national anthem and did a good job too. In fact, at the 2016 Pac -12 tournament, Kelsey Campbell did the same.

This reminds me of how I got started in wrestling. When I was in Jr High school, I used to do a lot of singing. Unfortunately, some of the guys started calling me a sissy, so I stopped and went out for wrestling. So who knows, maybe I could have been the next Freddie Mercury. Well, maybe not Freddie, but you guys get the drift. BTW, the guys who were teasing me all turned out to be great people. I still have good memories of all of them.

I think it would be pretty cool if this guy was invited to sing the anthem at the big 10's. It would be kind of fitting for a grappler to be honored at such an event. He has a pretty good voice for not being trained or having singing lessons. I believed he finished 6th in his district tournament. What a thrill it would be for him to hang around world class wrestlers.

Me too, sort of. I was in my high school marching and concert band, plus started in two sports. Harassed (all in good fun) by both groups.

Btw, the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, the story of Freddie Mercury, was very good. Worth the watch, imo.

Reminds me of long ago, our club was hosting the annual PJW Sub-Area meet. The schools PA system was acting up and we couldnt get it to play the Anthem. This cougar in the stands nearby heard of the trouble and offered to sing it, and the TD gladly accepted. When she finally stumbled down through the crowd in the stands, we realized we may have made a mistake, she was HAMMERED DRUNK, and mind you this is 9AM!!
Needless to say, it was a discrace.

We will never let the TD live that one down. Roseanne Barr did it better.

Reading this thread reminded me of a bit from comedian Greg Warren. He is a former wrestler (Missouri I think) and he did some funny videos for FLO not too far back. My favorite bit of his though was his “Flute Man Greg” bit - worth a listen if you have a minute...

That reminds me of how I stopped singing in concert choir in high school. My first year of wrestling, my sophomore year, I was also in concert choir. It was sort of a big deal to be in the choir - you had to audition and it was a full credit course. There was a conflict between a wrestling match and a choir performance and the choir director threatened to fail me and my friend if we did the wrestling match. We skipped the match, but that was my last year of concert choir.

Seems like a douche-y move to put that kind of pressure on a HS kid.
