Just read flo’s article. Said he made visits to ASU and Lehigh, and had in home visits with Pitt and Cornell. A little surprised Cael and co. weren’t mentioned. Granted it’s still early in his recruitment and it’s only a verbal, but I would imagine a potential 4xer, a hammer on top, with what I think is untapped potential on his feel would be of interest. I’ve learned not to second guess them just using this as a bit of a discussion. Possibly have others lined up? And if I’m not mistaken, even though he verballed, he’s still allowed to make visits? Anyone know the number of official/unofficial visits one is allowed to make, and does it vary by sport?

He's allowed to make 5 official visits during his SR year, plus however many unofficials (he pays for) at any time. That doesn't change with a verbal.

I'm only mildly surprised at limited/no interest from PSU. Right now he looks like he's gonna fall right into RBY weight-wise. And IMO Howard is much more in line with PSU's style.

Not sure exactly where he was going to fit, but he was definitely on my short list.

For Cael not to have gone after him given his credentials must say something. Cael has an unbelievable eye for talent. Although all were top recruits the pundits did not see Zain, Nolf, Nickal being GOAT type recruits.

Trust in Cael -

I'll shift my focus now to Barlett, Saunders, and the more I think about it the better Ferrari looks as Cassar's replacement 2 years from now asopposed to a 197. He is a big kid with room to grow. With Gable, Kirkvliet and others in the pipeline I think the best Heavies will be the 230-250 athletic types as opposed to 260+ guys. I still like Seth, definitely AA caliber, but don't see him being a top 4 heavy with who he is going to be facing.

I won’t believe that without evidence.

Flo talks about it often. Sure they were top 10, but 3x NC level guys taking on Steiber, Imar, Dean, MyMar (ranked ahead of Bo), type guys... They say no, they didn't see that level of separation based upon their highschool resumes.

The only recent can't miss multiple NC type kids I have seen recently are Spencer, Brooks, and Gable. Time will tell but all three are breathing pretty rarefied air at the highschool level.

Fair enough.

I think Chance was at the ultimate level until there were red flags in his senior year, and at that time people on this forum were saying Nolf would be better than Chance. But I don’t know if that was because Chance’s reputation had slipped, and I don’t remember what the professional pundits were saying.

You gotta include Mr. Hall in that list. I’m not sure Flo was aware there were other recruits his senior year—including the Valencia bros.

I do think that you’re kind of on to something here. Sure, our coaches can take a R12 type guy and grow him into an English or Conaway. But I think what they do best is replicate what Cael did. No, not 159-0. But finding talent that are 95th percentile that have the right attitude, and making them 99th. Doesn’t sound like much. Till you examine what that 4% really means (see NCAA results, 2008-2018). It’s pretty special.

I do not believe Hall was the same class as the Valencia's, they were a year before Hall.

I remember at least one poster saying that they liked Nolf better than Chance before their college careers started. I believe it was after Chance de-committed to PSU and committed to OSU. I don't think anything had happened to Chance's reputation at the time. It seemed to be more of a "no problem losing Chance, I like Nolf's style and talent better." At least that's how I remember it. They were certainly right!!

I remember that before Nolf set foot on campus, many on this list were saying he had more promise than Chance Marstellar, who was merely one of the greatest high school talents ever.

Chance had started to avoid some competition and he had a close one with Wiercioch. That’s when the talk started that maybe he wasn’t the Ginger Kolat

NICKAL, not Nolf was SCHEDULED to wrestle CMar at the DD before Chance hurt his back. Chance and Nolf were never in the same weight until he was forced to cut at OSU, and thats the only reason he was even in the same sentence as Nolf, did they ever even wrestle in HS?

I can’t wait to hear you explain how Spencer, Brooks, and Gable were just in the same sentence. :)

I thought while they were in HS that most felt Jason would more likely be 165 and Joseph 157.

This. Joseph was originally a 49/57 guy, Nolf a 57/65 despite their HS weights. Frame & genetics. Didn't quite work out that way.

myself and Cowbell were 2 posters who had been told by staff members of other schools that Nolf had the better upside than Marsteller

Prolly true, We had Nolf and Nickal onboard, then when Cenzo signed a year later,it was official, Chance would not be missed. The rest is history.:D

Are you new to message boarding?

Marsteller was missed here when he was in Smith's doghouse,, and when he was rumored to be transferring, and when he did transfer, and when he got in trouble at Lock Haven, and ...

And if he beats Cenzo this year, he'll be missed here all over again.

Im thinking that Chance was not a good fit for PSU AT THAT TIME--he has changed his ways now

That's all very true, but every time his name came up, the board collectively drooled, issues or not.

True that. Same thing with Haines. The amount of hand wringing here when both of them went elsewhere was off the charts.

And, especially with the Haines case, there was not a little criticism of the coaching staff. There was the feeling that we were going to lose out on PA recruits afterwards. Iowa is getting a fair number of PA guys, but our recruiting seems to be national (including PA of course) and it seems to be working pretty well! In the Marstellar/Haines vs Nolf/Nevills we came out just fine!
