Listening to Caels media session you can tell he likes the BJC matches. Mostly because you can fit more people, hook more fans, etc. Hopefully it’s nice and loud Friday night.

Then you have Rec Hall which this year seems like fans watching a golf match. No energy, can hear a pin drop. I haven’t been to rec hall in a couple years. Has something changed? Are they letting less students in?

Seems if it were up to Cael, you’d have every match in BJC and let the students have the majority of the tickets to get a louder, more rowdy crowd.

Our wrestlers seemed to love the Carver atmosphere last week. Someday, hopefully we can have the same environment where opposing teams can get “rec’d” instead of Carvered..

Our home schedule this year may have something to do with this. (Also the muffling effect of masks.)

If Rec Hall seems less than raucous for an opponent, BJC would be a mausoleum.

And no, Cael would not rather have every match in BJC. He has repeatedly over the years said Rec Hall should be the home and BJC should be for special events.

I think Cael is on record saying he likes the rec hall atmosphere better, generally. I agree that this year, the place is a bit more subdued, but that’s usually the case with inferior opponents. if we’d hosted Iowa this year, I bet you anything that place would’ve been blistering.

I thought I recall Cael saying he liked Rec Hall in the past. The interview this week seemed to imply he would like more at BJC. Maybe I interpreted that wrong. I’ll have to take another listen

I'd like to see 2 or 3 duals a year at BJC, just to mix it up. The production at BJC is awesome.

Yes, The last two home duals were wrestled in the middle of an ice storm (Indiana) and then a snowstorm (Rutgers). It's been a while since I've seen that many empty seats at Rec Hall for a dual.
I’ve felt bad for Drew in that I don’t think he’s seen anything close to the usual Rec Hall experience.

It is likely that university students have different priorities for their weekends.

I don't think students would ever fill up Friday night or Sunday afternoon duals. I don't believe the student floor section was particularly packed at any home dual this year. Weather and opponent play a small factor. While PA is the top wrestling state, wrestling is still a niche sport.

Gotta remind people what type of pin sound there’re trying to make! :)

I think some underestimate the fatigue of our schedule also. We travel to Michigan, wrestle Michigan then Michigan state then travel back to State College. Give it like 3 days then we're right back to Iowa.

Iowa came home on Friday and had a week at home basically to just rest and focus on the dual.

Without getting into covid and masking - I'll save that for the dumpster fire - it just kinda feels weird screaming with a mask on. I think that's hampering the crowd noise this season.

I don't think support is waning at all. It has a lot to do with the weather and also the level of opponents. I'm close to 3 people who attend every home dual, and they had to miss two this season because of ice, snow, and poor driving conditions. Take those two matches away and you only have two other home events against less than stellar competition. I think you'll see it pick up this weekend against improved competition if the weather doesn't interfere again.

Iowa didn’t have that issue- the only ones I saw wearing a mask were the cheerleaders

So many new faces around my seats this year and all are bumps on a log boring. I know the level of competition this year is down, masking, and the weather has been terrible but it's like everyone forgot how to even clap let alone yell. 90% don't even stand up and at least clap when the team comes in. Strange year for sure. FWIW I'll take Rec over BJC most any match but I understand the bigger ones moving to BJC and enjoy that also.

Iowa will be in town next year. I am confident the Big Ten will see to it (meaning their scheduling model is the same as this year). It'll be a better litmus test than this season's duals.

If they held every match at BJC, and put 9,500 more season tickets up for sale, I think they’d sell all 9,500 very quickly. That doesn’t mean BJC would be full for every match.

That is because no one was saying put a mask on, unlike walking in any building at PSU! I already got the email saying masks are required at the BJC, which sucks....
I loved that about living in Iowa. No mask mandates. I felt like a human again.

WE, of course, had to wear one in the airport, other than that they only place we saw masks was at one bar we stopped at, the workers had them on, due to their policy. Which was a shame because our bartender was really cute. Uber policy said we had to wear them but when we asked the drivers they said don't bother.

We were good, only two beers before and one drink after. It was midnight and had to get up at 3:45 am to head to the airport. My days of just powering through with no sleep are LONG gone.
