An altered state
China is in a bit of a pickle with Hong Kong. The people there have known freedom and will fight for it if necessary. Don't know how far they will take it but China will feel immense pressure to do something, probably with the para military.

But this ain't Tiananmen Square...and this ain't 1989. Tiananmen Square was easy to clear out as it was an open square with no buildings or infrastructure. The people had no where to hide or protect themselves. They had no tools or weapons with which to fight back.

Hong Kong is a massive city with huge skyscrapers, housing, critical infrastructure that would all be at risk in a crackdown. The people will have places to hide and materials to fight with. They will have high positions from which to launch weapons. The damage to the city, a key economic center, could be massive. The damage would be not just to the city but to the national economy.

And in 1989 the Chicoms shut off all communications to cover up the violence. They have hidden it from their own people and denied it on the global front. No one really knows just how many died there. In 2019, we have the internet, cell phones, miniature cameras, flash drives to smuggle out video of the violence. The world will know what happens.

If this gets violent and the whole truth comes out, how will the world respond? Will Apple, Google, Facebook, and others pull out? At the least they should cut ties with the government there. Many countries could possible impose economic sanctions. How will the Chinese people respond when they see the violence?

The Chinese have a long history of putting country before lives of its people. They have willingly sacrificed millions for ' the greater good' But here, and now, it may be different. Perhaps we have gotten to the point that the lives of the people are now equal to or greater than the 'greater good' of the country.
