Hope springs eternal - Jake Ryan and Nolf

Some of that stuff is hooey (There I said it!!). Not sure I understand some of our fan responses to this stuff. Take it as a badge of honor...no response is needed...focus on the good stuff happening inside OUR ROOM.

Read below for someone that, imo, gets it.

In light of recent results, I can see why some fans are crowing a little extra. Mostly all in good fun-Just hope they remember that what goes around, eventually comes around. Think that is the problem with a part of Iowa's (and our) fan bases, they have forgotten how they acted on top.

I do see the term "haters" thrown out a lot. Think there are very few "haters" among wrestling fans toward PSU, or Iowa, or OSU (maybe the Bucknuts, but not sure about that). But sometimes the "over the top" fans can draw out some bad response....

Jason got thrown at the Keystone Classic this year, but i cant recall if he gave up NF points after the TD. i think he did (a 2 Point NF) but am not 100% sure

He didn't give up any NF there (it was close, but in fact he never even gave up the TD). Zain gave up 2 to Stieber as a Freshman, so I believe the total for the 4 of them is 10:

EDIT: Per BobA's post below, the total should be 12:
Nolf and Suriano: 0
Zain: 2 (to Stieber)
Bo: 8 (4 to Martin at NCAAs, 2 to Martin in Feb. 2016 dual, 4 to Jackson)

I think that's all of them, but maybe I missed some.

A lot of their fans, much like Iowa fans, are beginning to complain about how our dominance is bad for the sport and how they want to see more parity. However, when has their ever really been parity in the sport?

In very general terms, we started with OK State (or whatever they were called in the early years) dominance for a long time, to Iowa State dominance, to Iowa dominance (again, for a long time), back to OK state, another mini Iowa run, now to current Penn State dynasty.

Sure, mixed in there somewhere you have a little Minnesota, Ohio State, and even Arizona State success, but for the most part, the history of the sport has been dominated in streaks by the same few programs.

I don't know why now the lack of parity is suddenly ruining the sport. I too like see parity in sports, but, I only want to see PSU become more and more dominant.

Actually the opposite they are giving PSU props and trying to figure how to get there. The thread about keeping it close is on the Ohio St board and their fans being that just fans. Not once posted here. But that is what fans do same as when big tens were lost fans here were jumping off bridges but the realists knew it was just one weekend and next weekend proved true. That is what makes this sport so good you can talk all you want but come scrap time chalk usually wins. And Penn st has one damn big piece of chalk

incorrect

Final: Nolf had a TF 25-10 over Mazziah Bethea (Penn)
the 10 points came from 10 escapes

Semis: Nolf had a TF 19-4 over Jake Wentzel (Pitt)
the 4 points came from 2 escapes and 1 reversal

Quarters: Nolf had a pin at 3:45 over Zac Carson (Eastern Michigan)
Carson got the initial TD, and 5 escapes, for 7 points, before getting pinned

Round of 16: Nolf had a pin at 1:16 over Zeth Dean (Harvard)
Dean had 3 escapes, for 3 points, before getting pinned

Round of 32: Nolf had a pin at 1:27 over Mike Marano (F&M)
Marano had 2 escapes, for 2 points, before getting pinned

Those Tom Brands quotes are beautiful. And not just because they paint Penn State so colorfully; for me, Brands' candor & originality is what's so beautiful.

"When I was a sophomore in high school, I went to a camp and there were college coaches in that camp and they repeatedly were saying wrestling is being ruined by (former Iowa legendary coach) Dan Gable,'' Brands said.

"Now you hear that argument that Penn State is making wrestling boring. ... Pre-determined this or pre-determine that. Ask (Oklahoma State coach) John Smith what he thinks about that.

"Actually it's good for wrestling,'' Brands said. "It's a barometer. You know they (Penn State) have guys who wrestle hard and we have guys who wrestle hard and that's where maybe one or the other ... something's gonna break. We want to be in that conversation and we have to perform at that level or excel at that level, so I think it's great for wrestling.''

There's nothing wrong with high-level mentality and a winner that's consistent, consistent, consistent,'' he said.

"Cael Sanderson knows how to promote the sport and he has an idea in his head and he believes in it. He put an entertaining team on the mat and the fans will come and he's proven that.

"Cael Sanderson did it right and it's right along my way of thinking. Fans will come if you have an entertaining product. Our job is to be entertaining and be dominant.

I'd suggest we look at the wrestler too, among other things. Cael sets the culture, the message, the tone and mood in the room...which is awesome, and conducive to learning and improving...but the wrestler has to have the desire, buy in, potential, etc., even saying he (the wrestler) has to minimize all the other distractions in their life (by keeping up with studies, managing nutrition and sleep and weight control, watching their socials lives, and more). (Man, that was a long sentence!)

Laying it all on Cael as some zen master where everyone automatically gets better isn't looking at it "big picture".
All very true, no doubt the guys work hard on and off the mat and deserve the lion's share of the credit. They stay out of trouble and do well in the classroom.

Cael seems to have a knack identifying those types of wrestlers and getting them to come to PSU. In the 8 years Cael has been here, very few issues for the wrestlers that keeps them from wrestling. With 9.9 scholarships missing on a kid because he can't stay eligible for whatever reason can really hurt the team.

Roar...do you see now what "hooey" leads to!
Yeah, saw that...completely unexpected consequence of using the word. Been around horses a good bit in my life, so "horse hooey" sort of where it comes from in my vernacular.

Very good point, it is amazing that the team has overcome major injuries to important cogs the last few seasons...Suriano,cortez this season, Nevills last season but if he missed on the character of even 1 of these recruits/coupled with the injuries I doubt we would be National Champions these last 2 seasons. Cael deserves a lot of credit for understanding what it takes to be successful in this sport not only physically but mentally as well!!

Good stuff. Not sure how to read this bit. Is he saying Smith would agree with him or is Brands throwing shade here?

it was against the Eastern Michigan kid (as Tom states below) and i do believe he gave up the TD. If it wasnt a TD, then it was a horrible non call by the ref, because it absolutely should have been

Didn't Martin get a couple swipes at the 2/5/16 dual against Nickal? I know the final was 11-5, but I thought I remember Martin starting on top in the 2nd and turning Bo?

The sequence starts about 20 seconds into this video:

Carson got a takedown earlier in the match, but he never gets one on that throw (whether or not it should have been awarded).

Ah, good call. You're right. He got 2. So that brings the group total to 12.

thanks for the video

I was sitting on the opposite side of the exposure
I agree it wasnt NF, but it was a TD IMO

and the rest of the video is insane. Jason is a real special talent. We left after semi's, so I didnt get to see his flip against the Penn kid live. i regret that bigly!!

I believe parity is great for our sport. It is important different schools have a shot.

If I could have it my way there would be a different school finishing second to Penn State every year with no repeats for say 7 or 8 years.

Pletch- Not sure if you are the father of the young man for tOSU, but in any case that young man is a fantastic wrestler. Moving up a weight class as a true frosh in Division I? Are you kidding me? Color me impressed!

Good stuff. Not sure how to read this bit. Is he saying Smith would agree with him or is Brands throwing shade here?

I read it as pertaining to a team being, supposedly, Predetermined to be the Champ. At the time of the article/quotes/PSU-Iowa dual, OkSt was looking pretty beast. I could picture Brands meaning: 'we certainly don't think Penn State is predetermined to be this year's champ, and I doubt John Smith does either.'

The current gap:

yaki-390-220.jpg

So you're saying "there's a chance"?

6 out of 10 is laughable, being generous, they only have a prayer of getting 4.
So bizarre. We just went an entire dual season losing no more than 3 matches in any dual. We are going to return the same, if not better, lineup....and now we are going to lose 6?

That said, I think there are some epic battles on tap for VJ with Massa and IMar. Hall's offense will open up more next year (except maybe vs Valencia...too much familiarity) Gonna be fun In any event.

Come on over! We need all the fans we can get. I think we do well within the limits in place. I kinda cheer for you when it isn't us, so you may as well do the same!
I really enjoyed watching your team at NCAA's a few years back (except when Port was beating Zain and Schopp was pinning Gulibon!). Edinboro is definitely good for wrestling!

I must admit I was excited when Mitchell was hired as an assistant. Thank goodness they made him cut his hair, though!

I hope Tim stays. Although we only had 1 AA this year, I think our future is bright.

Hoping not but hopefully can get back at his normal weight

Why are you hoping your nephew doesn't redshirt? Redshirts are usually good for the kid...gives them a year to make the weight and adjust, gives them another year of maturity, and helps their career?

Well his weight is good and the hoping he doesn't redshirt is more on the uncle side of wanting to see him compete lol But if doesn't go at his weight would rather see him shirt a year then have 3 years at his weight instead of trying to bulk up like this year just gave up too much weight
