HUH? Millen was a great great player at PSU, darn near unblockable a few years. Matt and Joe may have had a battle over a conditioning test (which he passed the next day), but to say he was OK or less at PSU is a joke. Actually may have been the heart and soul of the team. You do know he was a healthy inactive for his last Superbowl don't you?I would think it has to be someone that was ok or less at psu but either was an all pro or a long defensive career probably first team in the pros.
One player that still shocks me is Millen. Dt that couldn't run for paterno in practice but was an all pro linebacker for 4 super bowl winners.
No ship Sherlock! He was a defensive tackle and made the transition to an all pro linebacker. I have never heard of that before.HUH? well you weren't paying attention then. Lance Mehl moved from DL to all Pro LBer. Carlton Bailey (UNC) was a HS DL and played DL for UNC until NY Giants made him an all pro LBer. At least MM (as was Bruce Clark) were LBers when they first played at PSU. Both moved to DL out of need for PSU. To call MM underrated at PSU is just wrong. No ship Sherlock! Here's what u said Someone who was ok or less.....and then Matt Mullen comes up!! And that's my huh??? And the snarky comment... couldn't run for Paterno?? Huh? Again. He passed the test the next day!! The original premise was under rated defensive players Matt Millen name shouldn't have come upI would think it has to be someone that was ok or less at psu but either was an all pro or a long defensive career probably first team in the pros.
Now One player that still shocks me is Millen how he transformed himself from an all American Dt that couldn't run for paterno in practice but was an all pro linebacker for 4 super bowl winners. That is for you sluggo!
Which position move? LBer to DT ? 3 tech to 5? Or back to LBer as a pro? Now!!!! One player that still shocks me.( completely different topic) is Matt millen how he moved positions. His joke with the paterno voice "millen" is that" coach if I have to run a half mile, then they are going to score a td every time". Paterno was furious as all the players laughed!
I gotta say James Boyd. He was a playmaker known to deliver a punishing hit but was also a pretty sure tackler and would also come down with an interception when the ball was around him.
He had so many crushing hits during his time here but one play I remember vividly was in '99 against the Buckeyes, he came underneath the WR during a deep slant which looked like a sure completion, and came up with an acrobatic interception to which Musbereger accurately described as "A slick interception by James Boyd".
I honestly was very surprised he didn't have a solid NFL career. In my top 5 favourite defensive players here.
You guys?
Steve Sefter, Walker Lee Ashley, Shinto Prater. There are many.I gotta say James Boyd. He was a playmaker known to deliver a punishing hit but was also a pretty sure tackler and would also come down with an interception when the ball was around him.

Great pick sluggo, I grew up two blocks from Randy and played with his younger brother Steve in high school. Randy was a QB and LB in high school and played tight end at Penn State his first couple of years. Ended up an All-American nose guard.well one would think that someone who was an All-American , it would be hard to call him under rated, yet when talking of PSU greats, PSU greats on D, PSU great DL, the name Randy Sidler is hardly mentioned. And yet he was an AA. For this reason I rate him as a vastly under rated PSU player.
Funny, Boyd is always the first name that comes to mind when I think of most overrated at Penn State.I gotta say James Boyd. He was a playmaker known to deliver a punishing hit but was also a pretty sure tackler and would also come down with an interception when the ball was around him.

A star quarterback and defensive back in high school football and a standout on the basketball court as well in Salamanca, New York, Crist received an athletic scholarship to Penn State University. Believing himself to be capable of playing quarterback at a high level, he insisted on playing that position if he were to play football, but Penn State coach Joe Paterno insisted he play defensive back. Rebuffing Paterno's request, Crist instead used his scholarship to play college basketball, where he played four years for the Nittany Lions. Crist's reputation as a defensive back was nevertheless still high enough even after not playing college football that the Giants signed him as an undrafted free agent upon graduating in 1972. This time, he agreed to play defensive back, where he spent all seven years of his professional career, never playing quarterback again.[Chuck Christ
He never started a game at PSU and lasted 7 years in the NFL.
Brown played defense as a junior, running back his senior year.IIRC, Gary Brown played very well on defense after playing his first two years as a running back. Of course his biggest play was taking the handoff from the BYU QB to seal that wild Holiday Bowl game!
I think that he was under rated because he was not a great player. He felt like the weak link on some of those pretty good PSU teams.Derrick Bonna...sorry for misspelling. This guy started allmost from day one and made a ton of tackles. He was definitely underrated
Gino Capone. He took a lot of crap but he was good enough to make the Butkus watch list, lead the team in tackles, and to get a deal from the Minnesota Vikings.I gotta say James Boyd. He was a playmaker known to deliver a punishing hit but was also a pretty sure tackler and would also come down with an interception when the ball was around him.

Yeah thanks for mentioning Isom. Little man but big hitter and gets my vote.I'd venture to guess Michael Irvin would say from personal experience Duffy Cobbs and Ray Isom.
Easy Pick for me.From tiny Mapletown HS in Greene County Bochna was also a starter on the baseball team at PSU.
Mike Hartenstine
Though Mike was an All-American and the 2nd round pick of the Bears, you rarely hear his name mentioned as one of the great PSU defensive linemen. Mike had a long NFL career at DE - about 12 years.
RE: Mike Hartenstein
In his time at PSU, he was the man/dominant, but I agree somehow doesn’t get the recognition deserved when many of the great PSU players are mentioned.
Carl Nassib...I'm sorry, I have a hard time believing you go from second string as a junior, to All American as a senior. Somebody missed something on this guy for years.
