They were clearly a terrible time in nearly every way. But check out the surprising PSU average # of losing games per year for the following 5 year periods:

5 Yr Period Avg L's per year
2010-14 5.0
2005-09 2.6
2000-04 6.6
1995-99 2.8
1990-94 2.4
1985-89 3.0
1980-84 2.8
1975-79 2.8
1970-74 1.6
1965-69 2.4
1960-64 3.0
1955-59 2.8
1950-54 2.8

The All Time PSU winning percentage is 67% which correlates to an 8-4 season record, in these days of a 12 game regular season.

Our Four Worst losing seasons (maximum number of L's), dating back to 1931 were

2003 3-9*
1931 2-8
2004 4-7*
2000 5-7*
* Paterno Era low water marks.

The miracle of all this is the absence of the 2014, 2013, and 2012 seasons. And the fact that the last five seasons we averaged 5 losses, just one loss above our all time PSU average. Remarkable.

And following the Paterno Era low water marks from 2000-2004, his teams went on to average just 2.6 losses per season over the following 5 year period, including one one-loss, and two two-loss seasons including bowl games.

Bottoming out during the sanctions era, we suffered 4, 5 and 6 L's. The first two seasons were under OB, and the GRATB ( Generally Recognized as The Bottom) 6 L season was under new HC CJF.

Now the tide is about to turn. Players and coaches are getting to know and understand each other. Scholarships are returning towards 85. Depth will be the best its been in 4 years. And the youth movement is starting to skew towards a more normal distribution of juniors and seniors.

Its a good time to be a Penn State fan.
