How great is it that Terry Smith is on PSU's coaching staff?

To be honest, I don't remember the details, but I recall there had been some sort of animosity between Terry Smith and Penn State for a time while he was coaching in western Pennsylvania. Regardless, it is great to see that Smith is on the coaching staff. Kudos to Franklin for getting him last year.

You've probably all seen it by now, but I was so glad to see Smith featured prominently in the recent "Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Names. All Game" video released by Penn State (see below). I was a student at Penn State when Smith played there, and I always liked him as a player. Again, it's great to see him on the coaching staff now. Some of the "recruitniks" have said that his inclusion on the staff is a key to recruiting the western part of the state. I have no doubt that it is. Another sign that Franklin gets it.

When he was hired, some here were posting that Smith was so unpopular among fellow WPIAL coaches, that this move would backfire. Since then, we've got Sanders, out of a high school that was arguably Gateway's biggest rival, from a coach that was decidedly anti-PSU. We're one of Wade's favorites, and all of the good WPIAL kids seem interested in us.

I think it's safe to say that Smith was a very good hire, indeed.

I think the theory that Smith was disliked in the WPIAL and would detract from recruiting efforts there originated on the Pitt board, so you can take it with a huge grain of salt.
Perhaps all of Smith's former competitors prefer to work with him and not coach (and some allege not recruit) against him. With Pitt sucking wind it's in the WPIAL players' best interest for their coaches to make nice with Terry.

Good perspective. Thanks.

Yeah, why work against the state's flagship school and football power? pitt is irrelevant, and not all kids want to go out of state, so why not build a good relationship with Smith and Penn State?

-They can't put anything on the Pitt board that isn't true.
-Where'd you hear that?
-The Pitt board.

If I recall correctly, I believe the rumor was that Terry Smith was unhappy with the way Paterno handled an incident involving his son. I believe a few players got into a fight and his son was present. I believe his son was trying to be a peace maker. However, I believe his son's name still got dragged through the mud.

I was at that party earlier in the night with my friend on the bball team. Had all the makings of trouble happening.
