An altered state
Back in the day, before my reign on Earth, there was a coach named L Butler Hennon that became legendary for winning state titles against much larger schools.

One of drills was to put his players in a circle and have them pass around a basketball, bowling ball, golf ball, football, medicine ball, shot put, and a beach ball. This would force them to quickly adjust to various weights, shapes, and sizes which increased their dexterity, strength, and reflexes. As they got better they would pass the objects faster and faster. On the court they were known for their hand skills.

Perhaps a similar drill would help receivers catch the ball better. Certainly wouldn't hurt.

why not footballs, maybe a 100 a day.

We did footballs too. But in preseason we did both. Tennis balls are hard to catch as they tend to bounce out of your hand. Your reflexes needs to close your hand quickly and tightly. Also they are smaller and you need to focus more. Get in the habit of looking it into your hand that will translate to the field and not looking up during a catch.

One drill that's a proven winner......catch a bullet with your teeth. Once you experience this, a football is no longer a problem.

I have a few friends who catch balls in their mouths. Sometimes two a time! Not my thing but sometimes I do play with my balls?

Some people have the skills some don't
