How to Protect an Expensive Electrical Bike at College

An update for those who have commented. He loves the bike. He said it was the best investment he ever made. The only gym open at 6 in the morning when he works out is a 25 minute walk away, and he uses the bike to do his workout. (Also, takes his roommate) The campus he is at is fairly spread out, so the bike is useful.

He has stumbled on an unusual security tool in addition to the expensive lock he bought. One of the pedals that he was to attach has a stripped bolt. So he has been using the bike with only 1 pedal. Only real function of the pedals is to get the bike started or to go faster than 20 mph. He probably won't attach the second pedal to discourage thieves.

There is still a big risk of theft, but the bike is very functional, and it does appear that he made a reasonable decision to buy the bike notwithstanding the risk of theft. Just hope it isn't stolen.

Will add that he does love college so far in the business school that he attends. Said it is nice to be around people who want to do something with their lives.
Devils advocate comment here, but if he's using it as transport to a gym workout, maybe it'd be better if he just pedaled there under human power in the first place?

(I kid, I kid.) Glad to hear he's enjoying it.

Nothing to add - other than at State College, I had a bike that I bought my sophomore year. I actually left my bike attached to a lock over the summer and it was still there when I got back. After I graduated, I lived in Old City Philadelphia and brought it with me. It was stolen my third week.

He bought a Juicer Bike. Base price about $1600. With addons, $2000. Appears to be a really solid bike to me and when I ride it, it is real peppy. Sorry I missed your post last week or I would have responded sooner. (Later edit. Brand name is "Juiced" not "Juicer" https://www.juicedbikes.com/ )

I finally bought this:

Got a $200 veteran discount, so the price was too good to pass up when compared to other similar bikes (when also comparing all the features for the price too).

How did your son's bike work out for him? Interested if he had any issues with theft or weather or any other.

I bought mine so I can ride bike but keep my heart rate below 180 minus my age. When I ride now, just coming up a hill where I can sit to pedal gets my heart rate up considerably higher than that target number. Hopefully having the pedal assist will allow me to get a decent ride without exceeding the target very often.

Unfortunately it won't arrive for another couple of weeks. Bikes sold out quickly this year.

Funny timing. Yesterday my son said that his bike was the best investment he ever made in his life. I was thinking of looking up this posting posting. Bike has been a dream. No mechanical problems. Only issue is you have to be careful on gravel roads. my son took a nasty spill five or six months ago. Other than that he's been real happy.

Thought some people might be interested in update on my son's Juicer electric bike. My son has had his juicer bike for 4 years and will be graduating from college in a couple of months. Bike has performed admirably and has had zero problems with it. Certainly one of the best mechanical devices I have ever come across.
