How to shut down PSU offense right now

OSU has corners and safeties that are good enough and athletic enough to play one on one with our receivers and other tight ends. Fortunately, we won't see another team that has that capability until after the Maryland game.
Our other TE and WRs are nothing special. Teams will make us beat them this way. And or running game has frankly sucked lately.

I agree our running game has been worse. I think it's partly due to Singleton being banged up. But USC stopped our run game and Allar threw for almost 400 yards. I'm not saying that we can't lose one of the next 4 games but none of those teams are as good as USC.

USC didn’t double Warren. Washington will.

Minnesota beat USC, so there is that.

Double team Tyler Warren. Ohio State did it all day. And we couldn’t exploit it. We better have an answer for that on Saturday.
Agree 100% but Washington doesn't have Caleb Downs.

I can't help but to think Luke Reynolds is a good option. He's 6'4" tall so he's a big target. Also, what happened to Evans?

OK.

If you double Warren, you leave someone else open. You would typically have two/three LBers and 4/5 DBs. Doubling Warren means you are using a LBer and S in all probability as the S and CBs are the only ones you move around. You can also put Warren in motion so you know zone or man coverage as well as what LB and S if covering him. At that point, the RB/slot/WR knows where the open zone will be or who will get one-on-one coverage. For example, you put Warren in motion, see that he's being covered by the left OLBer and S. Warren makes a more up/in or up/out. Singleton or the slot makes the opposite move. That defender has to stay back since they are in single coverage they can't get beat deep.

You don't have to target Warren but you do have to get better at using him as a decoy.

So did Washington, so there is that.

If I was betting I'd definitely take Washington and the 14.5 pts. I also don't believe we have an 87% chance to win like ESPN predicts.

I think we win by 7-10 pts but I think there's a 20% chance we lose.
Two things. First, Washington is 0-4 on the road this season; they're like Iowa in that they're totally different teams at home than on the road. Second, this will be the first game that Washington will place on natural grass, which could have an affect on them.

they also have to fly five hours and play in a three hour time zone difference with college limited practice times and class responsibilities.

I think Washington will be a pretty good measuring stick coming out of the OSU game.

They have a highly graded secondary - based on bad opponents - and a somewhat terrible grade against the ground game. I think you'll see them feel confident running the same defensive game plan against us that we saw OSU execute. Man up the receivers, shade Warren, and see if PSU can effectively run the ball. Worth noting, we HAVE NOT effectively run the ball since Illinois - outside of the second vs Wisky with Pribula.

Offensively, I'd expect Washington to test the boundary - Vanover/Vilbert/Rojas/Wheatley were horrific vs OSU. No need for Washington to force anything up the gut against the middle of the defense, and you can effectively take Carter out of the play going to other side.

That should have a negative effect on them. However, it may be mitigated by the 8:00 start time.

A little. They still have to fly out the night before and play at 5pm body time. It is better than us having to fly to USC and play a nooner after losing seven hours (four in the air and three in time zones). I've noticed teams having to play after long flights in the B1G this year have not done well.

The total lack of edge control in the OSU game by the defensive ends is just another example of what an undisciplined unit that is, and that has been another season-long issue just like the constant offisdes penalties.

By the way, I believe that a lot of Carter's offsides penalties are because he feels that he must get a jump on the tackle to be able to get to the qb because, based on what I've seen, he just doesn't have the pure power to physically beat the tackle; it seems like the tackle often is able to engulf him. I also wonder if he knows how to use other maneuvers to beat a tackle one on one. Anyway, I've never believed that he should be playing defensive end; IMO, he should be a full time middle linebacker.

If they double Warren then our run game will look a lot better. Their run defense is not great, and stat-wise worse than USC, WV, Maryland, and Minnesota. They have to choose between putting another guy in the box to stop the run or doubling our best player. I just don't think they have the talent to shut us down just by doubling Warren. You need a lot of other players and they don't seem to have them.

I give us an 80-85% chance against Washington. If we lose then several things will have gone wrong since we are clearly the better team.

Ya they had that long flight against Rutgers and got beat too. This game should be easy win

What we have to do is exploit any double teams but scheming other plays open. Maybe by running plays where Warren is option 2 or 3.

What Drew has to realize is that at his size and with his athletic ability, Warren is always open. Trace understood this with Godwin and Gesicki. Throw it up and he'll go get it or get a call. I believe that Wallace is capable of doing this as well especially in man coverage.

Gotta take some chances.

Amazing, it took 8 games for some other team to "figure this out." Sounds like 7 teams should fire their DC. The brilliance on this board is astonishing sometimes.

Emotional posters. OSU actually just played a lot of man across the board. They went zone for one series and blitzed off it and got 2 sacks. Downs matched up on Warren and we didn't really test it a lot. They were aggressive vs our WRs, but again we didn't test it.

Wisconsin actually did double Warren. It was semi successful, but others were open and it ended up not affecting us greatly.

None of our remaining schedule can do what OSU did consistently. OSU has the best DL and secondary we will face by a large margin. That matters.

I guess we’ll see Saturday but Washington has good dbs. Should be a low scoring game.
