You know, a few weeks back, I posted about the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster. I reminded people about TMI and Chernobyl.

Some brainiacs on this board pointed out how screwed up the Russians are so that was NO SURPRISE and if "they" only placed the back-up generators on the roofs at Fukushima...crisis averted. Yeah, right! So, we have PhD DESIGNERS of the plant that NEVER thought about doing that in an area RICH IN SEISMIC ACTIVITY; we had Masters educated BUILDERS of the plant that NEVER thought about doing it; and, on top of all that, we had EMPLOYEES that never stopped and asked what would happen if a tsunami BREACHED the wall. This, btw, by physicists and engineers - in Japan, no less. Most of which have masters or PhDs.

So, now, a HUMAN error has contaminated the Animas River in Colorado. Only a revolution by the young will save this planet.

Look, you need to go back to standing on your street corner holding up your sign that "The End is Coming"! Because this is not the place to spew your crap! "Overly Roided MacDaddy" you need to go off the steroids or get back on your other meds! Why do the moderators allow this sputum?

I look forward to hearing how you come up with a way to blame this on organized religion

Obviously, the "Humanists" are behind this.

Well you are correct...a psych evaluation is necessary.

Yep. Moreover, he perfectly outlined why the notion of "humanist" simply won't work. People are flawed. Some are greedy, some are stupid, some are mean, but all are flawed.

Michael, do you take us for idiots? Anyone who reads a newspaper is going to be aware of the problems we're facing. The drought in the American West, it's gonna get real, real bad, for example. But we all know this, really, Sagan's been dead for going on nineteen years. I think that we all realize that most of the problems we have are going to stick around for a while and get worse along the way. Don't make posts which imply we each of us fell off the turnip truck just yesterday. You are just as smart as any of us and just as stupid, no more and no less.

And, I apologize for getting personal here, but from your posts, what you write and what you respond to, I'm getting the vibe that there is a real lack of joy in your life. It seems as if you don't appreciate anything. Your posts, by and large, are real downers and this, combined with your very obnoxious know-it-all attitude, leads to responses from the board which show at the very least a lot of frustration. You used to be a really big, positive part of this board and now you're just a drag. I know I'm not the first to say this.

I know this FREAKS out many/most but, for us as a species, technology and science will fix it all (meaning Mankind). We are not too far away from genetic engineering and practical nano-technoology. Problem solved :)
But who are we to mess with God's plans, maybe THAT is God's plan. I sure hope it is.

Now I've done it !!!

Take heart. There are already some excellent ground rules in place to safeguard us against certain aspects of the inexorable march of technological progress.

“The Three Laws of Robotics:

1: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm;

2: A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law;

3: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law;

The Zeroth Law: A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.”

Then it replies to religion as well, because religion was created by flawed humans.

Reminds me of a story I once read years ago.... main character named H.A.L. 9000

In my case, not necessarily. Just think about one specific big problem we're facing now and just imagine what it's gonna be like in, say, 25 years. I'm nobody's fool.
Impossible to predict such things. 1939 looked a lot cloudier than 1946, for instance.

Another great read. It is from Asimov's I, Robot. So good that someone decided to name their corp after it - LINK: iRobot

For the past couple of years, one of our members in the National Society of Professional Engineers brings different robotic designs, which he borrows from work, to our NSPE Chapter. We set up an area in the mall and present different engineering disciplines, avenues to follow for young people that are interested in technology and science, and display various engineering materials. Getting back to the robotic machines, they are traversing around the mall and performing varies motions and activities. The passersby are in amazement.

I usually bring a 40” flat tv and a dozen segments (discs) of the History channel’s “Engineering Disasters” (which I purchased) not pirated. I also bring a real bamboo plastic finished slid-rule I used at PSU & work, along with an old mountain transit for display. These items canthen compared to my laptops and three-dimensional structural software. A really nice comparison would be the old transit to robotics survey equipment.

for those that have seen a slide rule:

When a secular humanist loses faith in humanity, hilarity ensues. I do hope you find peace at the end of this downward spiral.

Yes, this must be some form of "humanist" self-flagellation - I can just picture Mr. anti-theology here whipping himself raw.... Can you say koo-koo goes cocoa puffs?

That is really meaningful for the students who take interest. I hope you get some good feedback.

I have wondered quite a bit lately about robots and humans. I really got interested again a few years ago when I reread P.K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" At one time, the thing that concerned me most was the possibility of great numbers of humans being leveraged out of the workplace. Of course, that is no original thought. Then again, I expected that software would have leveraged more people out of jobs than it has so far. Not that the numbers are small. Then there are robots and warfare. No little concern. Warfare will continue on with or without robots though. I want the side I'm on to have them too.:) I am most intrigued by what the relationship between humans and robots might end up being. That is what I liked most about "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" and Scott's adaptation "Blade Runner." Would it be possible that the robots could at times act more human, that is, with more compassion, empathy and understanding, than certain desensitized human beings? I am neither a scientist nor an engineer, but I have a feeling things are progressing rapidly and that the answer to that question is not so far away.

I always thought that the sliderule was an incredible piece of engineering. LED scientific calculators were available and used when I was in High School. My Physics teacher in high school brought in slide-rules for the class and had us use them in physics. I am still amazed at how they work.
