I still cannot get over the loss to Notre Dame...

Because we are incapable of making clutch plays in winning time against these good teams. When I say good teams I don't mean Minnesota and Iowa or SMU and Boise State. I mean OSU, Michigan, ND. Teams that have equal talent or even more.

I started a thread on this because I saw Jack Sawyer create a strip sack then rumble for a TD to turn what could be a tie game with two minutes left to a 14 point lead for OSU. It got me thinking, do we ever make a play like that at that juncture of a huge game? Winning time. The answer is no, except the blocked FG which feels like forever ago.

I think it is a mental fortitude kind of thing. For whatever reason we are not built for the biggest moments.
Lack of mental toughness are hallmarks of Frankin squads.

It is Franklin. He has horrible instincts in big games. Goes too aggressive when should be conservative. Plays too vanilla in RZ when should be aggressive. He just can't get out of his own way.
The thing that I didn't understand is why after Allar and the receivers had the game, they did why would do what they did. I remember yelling at my wife "what the hell are they doing" I don't know who was at fault at the end of the game but I have a hard time believing that was an AK called play in that situation. 40 seconds left and we were tied Run The Damn Ball.

We will see on Monday but I tend to agree. The only way ND has a chance is if OSU plays down to them (turnovers, terrible game by Howard, special teams big plays for ND). ND should have a very difficult time moving the ball. On defense I do think the ND secondary can somewhat slow down the OSU pass attack but OSU also has a great run game so I don't see ND having that much success holding OSU down. It is apparent to me that there is OSU at one level then the next best which are ND, PSU, Texas, Georgia all at a lower level. We should see that play out on Monday.

A Notre Dame win would be an upset on par with our defeat of Miami almost 40 years ago.

If it were to happen, the recipe would be the same: a great defensive effort to neutralize the many NFL-caliber weapons on the Ohio State side of the ball. If they can hold the Buckeyes to 20 points (or less), they have a chance.

Personally, it's hard for me to see this game even being close. I think Ohio State is going to win and they won't need a heart-stopping drive in the final minute to do so. It will have been decided long before then.

Exactly. I understand there are play packages but must be ones that plays sidelines and does not give Drew any high risk looks...like that INT. I liked our changes in OT. It also shows a lack of confidence by CJF that has to take such risk

How did we blow that game, it was ours.

Hard to swallow but life goes on.

However, here's an interesting perspective. It took Harbaugh 9 years to win a national championship at Michigan. For the first seven, his team often underachieved and came up short in big games. Many Michigan fans gave up on him and wanted a new coach.

In the 8th year, they made the 4-team playoff only to lose a close semi-final game they should have won. But that loss set the stage for the ultimate breakthrough the following year which sent Harbaugh out in a blaze of glory (and one step ahead of the NCAA posse).

And keep in mind that Harbaugh didn't take over a program crippled almost to death by sanctions.

The point being, all it takes is one breakthrough year...and sometimes just one breakthrough game...to totally change the narrative and instantly wipe away the memory of everything that preceded it.

Keep hope alive!

I will never get over this game either. It was worse than OSU 2017 and USC 2017 Rose. We were clearly the dominant team versus ND and Allar decided to have his worst game, unforced by ND, this season. I still think the Browns and the Giants chirping in his ear to come out in this draft really messed up his mental composure. I also blame AK for not settling down into a run only game in the second half. We literally could’ve run the ball down their throats every drive every down.

ND is not beating O$U. They shouldn’t have beaten PSU! The leprechaun showed up on the five yard pass that didn’t work, the fumble that somehow PSU couldn’t grab, and he tripped Miller on the long pass. He used up all the luck of the Irish.

Face it, Franklin blew ass again.

I would not describe it as a lack of "mental toughness." I would call it "mental maturity." And it's not just the players.

The thing that bothered me most about that game was watching the defense come out totally flat at the beginning of the 3rd quarter right after it played soft as time expired in the first half. How does that happen if you are in the right mental state? It was like the reverse of being over-amped, celebrating, and committing personal foul penalties.

Franklin teams are plenty "tough." What they are not is level-headed. To be fair, lots of teams have the same problem. This is how you can have strong teams lose games they should win easily. Lack of preparedness and a lack of focus. It's mental.

I think Connor Stallions was Michigan's savior. It helps to know exactly what play is coming at you.

It absolutely blows my mind they were allowed to play for a Natty. Just goes to show you how tolerate today's society is with blatant corruption.

It’s an ideology with a specific goal. The good news is more than half the country still resists it.

They made the playoff in 2021. Maybe that was year 7 for Harbaugh. Franklin is not Harbaugh and is showing the disturbing trend of managing to lose many winnable games.

Call it what you want but there clearly is a mental component to our woes. Players and coaches. It is like we get to winning time where we have a lead and we say well this is our time to start blowing it.

ND adjusted to the run in the 2nd half. They were better at stopping it. Problem was Allar was miserable and so was our defense.

You're right...it was year 7...and they got blown out by Georgia.

The next year they lost to a TCU team that they were favored to beat by almost as much as Ohio State is favored over Notre Dame this year.

This followed a number of seasons of underachievement to the point where a lot of Michigan fans wanted Harbaugh gone.

It wasn't until year 9 that it finally came together and the past became history. With the help of Connor Stalions of course.

I agree that Franklin is not Harbaugh. He has no Connor Stalions around for one thing. Still, the narrative can change quickly. One breakthrough season. Even one breakthrough game...and Franklin instantly loses the Big Game albatross that's been hung around his neck.

Who knows, that could happen next year. I mean, don't hold your breath for it...but hope springs eternal.

I hope so but man these types of losses year in and year out are brutal. As each year passes the confidence that Franklin can get it done in a big game just keeps eroding.

Are you sure? I heard this team is as clutch as Paterno years.

Only problem. I attended many of the Paterno games (and Franklin era games) and we won almost all of them during Joe’s tenure.

The Paterno years when everyone here was bitching about the the same things? Like when a blocker for a punter backed into the punt blocking it. All of the whining and fan trauma from them is documented on here. Slow starts, not ready to play, Joe should retire, yada, yada... Those couple recognized Natty's came over 630 games. Rewind the posts, see what we or other PSU fans posted over those 630 games. Go ahead, do it and enjoy the read.

We never had it so good…big wins almost every year…sometimes more than one…certainly not one in a decade.

Fans complain about every loss….

But in this case, where there is smoke…
