I think we have found something in Potts

Agree. Would like to see him get more touches. I think he can break a couple long ones b/c he can make people miss.

Singleton just doesn’t see the holes and doesn’t have any wiggle. Kaytron is a hammer.

Really worried about Singleton. He's taken a step back from last year. Actually hope it's injury related, but don't think it is. Too much bulk? Anyway, in limited views but to me Potts looks like a poor man's Blake Corum. Similar build and similar cutting ability.

I think the key thing is to deploy all 3 RBs using their strengths. Potts is looking like a great portal snag, between his 3rd variation running style and Allen getting dinged up providing us quality depth.

Singleton will get it together. He's just lacking good vision and he is on/off with his patience. Sophomore slump. It happens. He's still becoming a dangerous threat as a receiver and he's blocking well.

agree. he just doesn't look as quick or fast this year. holes would help, but he doesn't seem to get through them when a crack appears this year with a spurt..

If we have to rely on Potts this year for any reason other than there's an injury to Allen or Singleton that's a problem and means the backs aren't close to what we said all off season.

Not sure what was ailing Allen. But it didn't seem too serious. Maybe sit him next week or limited carries. We need him healthy.

I don't know if it's a mental block with Singleton or if he's got a nagging injury. But he definitely doesn't look the same.

Next week seems like a great time to split most of the carries with Singleton amd Potts. At least one of those 2 are going to need to be productive.

It’s my guess he will sit next week…..it’s a bye week!🧐

Isnt next week is a bye week? Then everyone sits.

If you guys watched the VT/Pitt game the VT RB is likely not a high draft choice but he makes great cuts and makes people miss and would be an upgrade over the way Singleton has been playing this season. Nick needs to lose some weight and get his quickness back.

I think the running backs feed off each other. One sees the other doing something a little different, and being successful, and then they go do similar and turn things around.

Years ago JoePa pulled McQuery out for a couple of series in a game because he just wasn't connecting with receivers. Wally came in and made some risky throws, but moved the ball down the field. McQuery saw this, came back in, and did the same the rest of the game.

I think Nick is going thru the same experience and will be fine.

Singleton does not have the same speed or explosiveness this year. He had that one wide open run off the edge yesterday and was easily caught….last year that was a TD.

I agree with the OP, Potts has earned more opportunities.

Remember when he came here and multiple posters questioned why PSU was interested in him??
I liked adding Potts as our 3rd back...it just wasn't a move worth getting excited over. Still isn't. We need more for our top 2 backs and it's nice to have Potts in case of injury.

People are also acting like he was heavily involved yesterday. I think he had 3 carries before Allar left the game.

Looked like bruised ribs but that is just a guess.

I noticed Allen and Singleton both looked gassed after a few carries. Could they possibly been sick?

I’ve been miffed by Singleton’s lack of carries this year. We seem to be relying heavily on Allen. Wonder if Singleton has a nagging injury. Yesterdays game should open up the door for Potts. He looked explosive! He looks like a back that will get a 20 yard plus carry every game. I’d play him over Singleton at this point. But then again with the portal you need to be careful how you handle players.

you could see he recognized he had an opportunity and took it. I am happy for him. We'll see how long fat man is out. But we are loaded at RB. And, if we play Beau, we have a lot of options. Not suggesting that, just stating that I am comfortable with him as well.

Over reaction time much? Nice to see him playing well but now suddenly the 3rd string RB who had success let in the game against a mediocre team at best is more popular than the back up QB. Some things never change.

It looks to me like, when the line blocks the DL/LB, the Safeties a filing really fast. That is why the Beau pass to Potts was so open. When he faked the run, the Safties abandoned the middle and Potts was bored and lonesome over the middle. I am not sure why we aren't throwing play-action slants.

I don’t think it’s an over reaction at all. Potts was the most explosive RB yesterday. You can clearly see Singleton has lost a step when he broke that run outside. Last year that would have been 6. Remember the Auburn game last year? He was outrunning SEC DBs.

Potts had 3...THREE...carries yesterday. And one catch when the game was well over from Beau. Consider the sample size. Singleton and Allen need to improve if we're going to make the playoff. If we need to rely on Potts we're not the team we thought we were.

I think we may need Potts more going forward. I get the sense that Franklin doesnt want to lose Singleton or Allen to the portal so he doesnt want to take carries away from them.

Just the sense I get the way Franklin talks about them during press conferences and how he splits their carries during games, etc... I feel like he's more afraid of Singleton transferring. Just the vibe that I get.

But we need to do whats best for the team right now and get Potts more carries.

It was scouting by NW. They knew every time Beau came in he ran the ball. So they crashed when he faked the run. This play was probably called so that if he comes in during a critical part of a game the defense will play more balanced instead of selling on stopping him from running.

Yurcich Chess.

Agreed, if Kaytron out, then give Potts his share. Singleton needs to earn it just like everyone else and what he’s shown vs Potts….I think Potts deserves some more opportunities.

Singleton has looked lethargic and has lacked quickness for the first 5 games of the season. If you watch other high level college RB's they have moves and make people miss, usually at least one on each run. Can you remember Singleton making anyone miss yesterday? I can't. He doesn't have the elite speed to turn the corner consistently and also almost always runs right into defenders to bull over the defender for 2-3 more yards when he should be juking and either getting 2-3 more yards or getting clean to the next defender. It's not an over reaction to play the player that is playing better - it's what coaches that want to win do consistently.

1. I don't think Singleton nor Allen are a threat to leave. They split reps pretty evenly. That saves their longevity.

2. Potts is playing good, but he isn't doing anything extraordinary. His run look as explosive as the Singleton run late vs Iowa. There is a place for him in this offense, but I'm not certain it's at the expense of taking out our top 2 beyond splitting reps/injuries.

3. Too high, too low here. I think it's OK to acknowledge that our offense isn't super high powered, but it is efficient at scoring points. The yardage is down, but our defense is creating this. You can't have a highly dominant defense and 500+ yards offense. We are playing complimentary football.

4. It's quite alright to know we need better offensive output to beat the Big 2. It should be understood that we have plays that have been successful that we haven't pulled out weekly, some since WVU. Are we being too vanilla and not going to have live game reps for some plays? Perhaps. But the deep shot to Cephas shows it's there and we just aren't calling it.

5. We have 2 TEs who may not be blocking as good as we blocked last year, but they are receiving pretty good. We haven't even went to the well a lot yet.

6. Biggest weakness I see is our return games. Singleton isn't a threat back there yet. I'd rather see somebody else. Saunders seems to lack field awareness, though his hands are good if in position. King Mack time maybe?

Just some pondering...

According to the roster on ESPN, Singleton is 6 ft, 224 lbs. Allen is 5 ft 11 in, 211 lbs. Not sure how that compares to last years numbers for them.

I keep thinking nagging injury for Singleton, but Franklin keeps sending him out, and I haven't seen any noticeable limp or anything like that.
