Times have sure changed. I never imagined I would need earplugs for a gymnastics meet. The music was blaring before we arrived and was still going after the meet was over. It's wore than the football game because it is enclosed and never stops. And naturally the sound is all distorted. Some nice new touches includes individualized music for the balance beam routines, which adds nice flow to the movement of the athletes. Also, the non-competing athletes gather around the apparatus and cheer on their competing teammate. During the WVU floor routine, it was almost like a chorus line providing synchronized backup. It seems the performance angle is more prominent, which isn't a bad thing. The moves are still there, but seem to be in less of a vacuum.

Oh yeah, #25 Penn State eked out a win over #17 West Virginia 195.75- 195.325.

(I miss being able to talk to people I sit next to at sporting events.)

Yeah, I've never understood why the music has to be so loud. Brown had been doing an annual event with wrestling and gymnastics held side-by-side, and the one I attended last year I figured would be my last because of the blaring music not only hurting my head but also tattooing some godawful tunes on my brain that took days to remove.

It looks like the athletic department took the decision out of my hands, though, as it is not a scheduled event this season. Unfortunately, though, the wrestling team is barely wrestling here this season, as it is. Something like 3 home duals -- all in February. At least Princeton is on the schedule.

They do the same thing now at wrestling duals where the music is so loud during any stoppage in wrestling you have to shout to talk to the person next to you.

As an undergraduate in 1958 -60 all the gymnastic meets were total sellouts. And not a sound of music.

Funny, our group was just discussing this the other day. I know some here are season ticket holders for Ice Hockey, and surely others attend too. Wouldn't want to be next to the speakers when there's a Penn State goal.

Kids (not just Ice Hockey or Wrestling) seem to not be bothered by it.

...my wife and I also attended the gymnastics meet ...
... it appeared to me that much of the music accompanied individual performances ...
...only one athlete competed at a time and it seemed that she would wait until the music started to begin her routine...
... it also seems that each individual wrestler has a favorite musical introduction... :)

The music is just part of the routine and not something that seems to bother me.
I do think it is a shame they don't pack Rec Hall for these meets anymore.
It would be nice if the Lions were a top tier team again.

Women's gymnastics, huh?

Pics or it didn't happen.

Saw on the screens yesterday at the match, that the NCAA Woman's Gymnastics Championships overlap the Olympic Team Trials in April. Headed up early to spend Friday watching gymnastics, then Saturday and Sunday wrestling. Gonna be a great weekend.

Edit: It's a Regional Championship, not the Finals.

oh man. you may have cost me my companion to trials. my wife (who was a gymnast in her youth) was supposed to come with me, but i think i have to tell her about this and let her make up her own mind about what she wants to do.

At the match Friday night I read the Rec Hall attendance record is for WGym against Utah in the early 80’s. I believe #2 was WGym too

The published attendance record for Rec Hall was the Dec 5, 1973 basketball game vs Virginia. The reported 8,600 in attendance exceeded the fire code limit by 1,400. Why? It was announced that John Cappelletti who had won the Heisman the prior evening would be in attendance and honored at halftime.
