A single buddy just moved into a sweet loft condo uptown and I want to get him something he'll really get some value out of and that could kind of stand out as he plans on livng here for at least a decade or longer-he is also a great friend. I'm trying to spend under $200....just wanted to see if anyone had some good suggestions or ideas before I jump on Amazon.

A bachelorette?

(I have to admit I kinda stole that joke from a The Big Bang Theory episode where someone asked the comic store owner (Stuart?) what was a good thing to get for a 15 year old boy (meaning what kind of comic book) and the comic store owner answered "A 15 year old girl?"

Does he have a balcony? Get him a Weber Q. Loved mine for my old condo.

I'm 36 and i'd love a bachelorette my damn self-good call!

A good set of monogrammed etched bar glass wear perhaps with a decanter that matches. Places like Makers Mark sells custom sets. 4 personalized rocks glasses sells for $60 and you can add on other personalized bar items to fully stock his liquor cabinet. I’m sure these things are available in many other places as well. Makers also sells a bespoke bottle of bourbon in a personalized bottle labeled and numbered especially for the recipient as a nice accompaniment to the aforementioned bar items.

A good chef’s knife & a good paring knife. I’ve been using Misen knives for two years and really like them. Very good value.

https://misen.com/

Good reviews from Serious Eats as well: At $65, The Misen Chef's Knife is the Holy Grail of Knives

If you have money left, or if he already has good knives, look at getting him a good sharpening kit or whetstone, or a good cutting board & small bottle of oil to maintain it.

Another idea would be a good all around cookbook, such as How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman or The Essential New York Times Cookbook: Classic Recipes for a New Century by Amanda Hesser.

A Trojan 20-pack sounds about right for this scenario. If that doesn't send the right message, a bottle of Tequilla will probably help.... good luck!

All kidding aside.... hand made copper mugs (moscow mules) will fall within that $200 range and will be cool for an uptown loft. The delta between that and the walmart version will probably get your single buddy laid a time or two.

A set of 4 Tiffany low-boy cocktail glasses was s the perfect gift

a Finex cast iron skillet.

This is what I was going to say. A good set of bourbon glasses and a crystal decanter.

Honestly, all jokes aside, don’t shy away from a couple of gift cards to Lowe’s or somewhere similar. I think people have a tendency to always want to give the perfect gift at the expense of practicality. Unless you know exactly what he needs and when, it’s hard to get a gift that won’t collect dust on a shelf.

I agree. Cocktail sets are nice but eh. It is like groomsman gifts. Most just sit somewhere until you throw them out.

a good cordless drill is invaluable and will be around for a long time. I dont know if he has one or not, and I know it is a loft thing, but still there are times a man needs one.
Wish I could upvote this more than once.

That said, IMO, it is better to give a gift card for a place that sells them because a lot of guys have "their" brand. Plus with a lot of cordless power tools, you're going to want to "buy" into a system of batteries.

While tools may be practical, they are not exactly memorable gifts. Get something unique and classy that he would never buy for himself.

A lot depends on what he likes. If he cooks, the knives or good cookware set. If he likes wine, a good bottle of Silver Oak Cab. If he has a small condo deck, a mini-grill. Nest thermostat (which you can get discounted from your electric company in many cases). If he cooks like a bachelor, an Air Fryer. Yetti cooler. Or this:

Hey Nit,

Have you seen the new white ale from B J’s Brewhouse? I’d think about suing for copyright infringement. You did file, didn’t you?

Not sure if he's into music or not, but you can find a pretty solid turntable set-up for under $200. Collecting vinyl is a fun hobby, plus turntables are cool and a great conversation starter when he has guests.

I'm also really into the ascetics and sound of a Marshall Wireless Speaker.

Ok, so this may be way out there. A good number of lofts don’t have entry closets, or very big ones. A cool coat/hat rack would be great if his place is lacking that closet. Guests would see it on more than half their visits.

A really good bottle of scotch. And a nice decanter/glass set.

That's nice Ro but if ever I received a nice bottle of Scotch it would be re-gifted before that person got back home.

Unfortunately I don’t own the trademark. There are a lot of Nitwits in this world. But only a few will admit it. Never heard of BJs restaurants before though- thanks. If I’m ever in one I’ll give that beer a try.

Case of his cofavorite beer, bottle or his favorite bourbon. You get the idea.
