Assuming TC was still AD, Fran, Tom, Jay or perhaps one of the former PSU coaches that was working somewhere else?

Or, ask someone that would know..... or their attorneys.

No, what? I heard from people who were formerly connected to the program that Meyer was a lock, as well. Can you prove otherwise? Not saying it's right or wrong but the rumor was definitely out there.

I just think its a goofy question I'd rather not think about. Its like asking "if JFK didn't get assassinated, how would history be different". Don't know, don't care.

Phil had said repeatedly on here that PSU was going to go outside the program for the next coach. I think JVP wanted to give his coaches the chance to stay if mutually agreeable with the new HC, or to leave with a nice cashout, so he helped to set up those transition contracts for them.
Probably would have been a mixed bag of who stayed and who left. Fran was not coming back to coach, Galen Hall and Dick Anderson had already said they were going to retire when JVP did. Bradley may have headed off to see if he could land a Head Coaching job. My guess is that the new HC would want to retain LJ and Vandy, just as O'Brien did, and maybe try to keep Bradley. Others were more likely to be up in the air, including Jay.

I think I recall reading that JVP had given Curley a list of three of his preferred candidates, which included Meyer and also Mike Riley, who was at Oregon State at the time - now with Nebraska. I forget who the third was.

Prior to the dumpster fire, there were strong and persistent rumors about Urban Meyer being all teed up. Others on here have disputed that, though.

Whatever "validity" any of the Urban Meyer to PSU rumors may have had........it became a dead issue in the spring of 2011 - when Tressel was deposed at OSU

Once that job became available, any chances that may or may not have existed that Urby would take over for JVP at PSU, were deader than Abe Lincoln

I've heard that, too. I don't recall seeing why they waited, though, instead of getting him in place asap rather than handing it over to Fickel in the interim. A mid-year change was going to take place; if he was the mutual choice, why not name him in June? Was Meyer's contract with ESPN a factor? They usually have "out" clauses for coaching gigs, though.

And what's this about Lincoln?

Correct. The other names rumored to be on Joe's list were Gary Patterson from TCU, Rick Peterson then at Boise State and Greg Schiano then with TB in the NFL. Everything happens for a reason... I would not trade Franklin for any one off them including Urban! Franklin understands and promotes what Joe stood for better than any other coach I am aware of.

Jay.. I don't care what anyone says Joe would have had the keys to his son.

Nobody knows the conversation Curley and Joe had, its all speculation.

Bingo. Let's wonder whose claim that question was intended to support?

Yeah, last time I checked, message boards were allowed to discuss hypotheticals. Short of Tim Curley making a pronouncement of what he and Joe talked about, I doubt anybody knows.

As for Urban, it is not conjecture that he and Joe were close, that was a fact and known. PSU had just played Florida in the 2010 Bowl game so the two of them would have had some time together at the bowl functions to have had some off the record private discussion relatively easily. And the thing that I always thought was just too coincidental was that when the whole JS scandal came down, Urban came in and scooped up all the top PSU recruits almost as if he had been following them and new exactly who to target to flip to OSU.

Real curious, aren't you?

Eh, there's been some fun book written on that premise. But I enjoy alternate history stories....

I doubt it. You need to look at all the hires in other sports before Joe's last year. TC was strongly moving away from folks with PSU connections. Looking back (with hindsight), we'd gotten a little ingrown in athletics. Almost all of the other sport (outside football) hires in the preceding 5-6 years had absolutely no PSU connection--or at most a year as a grad assistant--and I think that was only in one case.

It was Urban. If you go back and look, PSU was having an unusually good recruiting class. Then all the crap, and Urban ends up at OSU, along with a few of the higher rated recruits. I've always wondered if he was helping to recruit for Penn State, then just had the recruits change to OSU when he went there.

Jay was NEVER a consideration for Joe or Curley. Saying shit like that is just pure Paterno hate.

Proof, and not say hear say or something some media hack said..

I find it hard to believe Joe would pick someone that is the total opposite of himself.. Urban is a classless fool.
Sure, let me get you the contract that was written up.....

Oh shut up!! Joe hated Jay is what you are saying? Joe stood by his son many times when people wanted Jay fired.

Saying Joe wanted Urban, maybe the guy who was the biggest opposite on what Joe was and represented if a total farce. Urban lied about his health, remember that? I find it hard to believe that is the guy Joe wanted to succeed him.

Urbs was not coming to PSU, even before the Sandusky shit hit the fan. Barry is correct; once Tressel was ousted from OSU, Meyer was headed there. If you can find it, Bruce Hooley, a former (I believe past tense is correct) Buckeye beat, writer put together a pretty good timeline of that courtship.

Curley, Spanier, and even Joe might have thought that he was headed to PSU, but they were mistaken.

There is no evidence and no one in authority has ever indicated that Joe ever championed Jay to succeed him. You just make things up to fuel your Paterno hatred,

Prove it wasn't, you cannot do that either. Nobody can prove it, so just stop.

As for you find it hard to believe that Joe would pick him, the you obviously don't know much. As I pointed out above, it was KNOWN that Joe and Urban got along very well. There were interviews where they talked about how they spent time together on the Nike Trips and how well they got along. And Urban interviews where he would gush about Joe. So you are 100% wrong if you think that Joe and Urban were not good friends preceding the JS scandal. And obviously you didn't follow because the discussion was had on the PSU boards as to who JoePa could like Urban because he was such a classless coach when these interviews came out.
