Real question is why was Hurt the starter? Saban may have gotten lucky because the backup was intending to transfer to UCLA. Now he probably stays at Bama and his younger brother is supposed to be even a better QB.

That's just a function of MSU being mediocre in that era. JoePa's 3-2 record vs. MSU in 1995-1999 didn't include any wins over an MSU team that won more than 6 games. We also got outscored in aggregate in those games, FWIW.
In retrospect, that was a preview of what JoePa's teams would become in the 2000s. Beat the bad and average teams but very rarely beat good teams.

This is absolutely false. His entire family moved from Hawaii to Alabaster, Hawaii...about an hour from Tuscaloosa. His son was not going to UCLA.
