About Willies thoughts on the public v private schools debate w/ a Manville twist

Maybe it's just the parent of two teenagers in me, but a grown man and wrestling media figure calling out Mason in public for the path he choose is asinine. I enjoy a lot of Willie's work and listen to nearly every FRL podcast, but he could use a dose of maturity. He really seems to have it in for Manville in particular, having previously predicted he won't last at PSU, etc. This is NCAA wrestling we're talking about, not Professional sports.

I don't like when private high schools actively recruit kids for sports.

In Mason's case, he got a great HS education and he's enrolled in ROTC at PSU. Mason is using his experience for something larger than wrestling.

Willie usually makes solid points but I'm siding with Mason on this one.

I'd like to see Willie try to make it through ROTC in one piece.

"Calling out Manville" is a bit strong. The Anvil replied to Willie, and Willie replied back. Perhaps that reply back could've been toned down. He is correct on the substance though: Manville grew up in the DC suburbs; went to HS in Apple Valley MN, Blair, and Wyoming Seminary; and the family has now returned to VA.

That said, Manville's choices were the correct ones for him.

Has he said what it is he's objecting to?
I read all of Willie's tweets on this last night. The overarching theme is his concern about the health of wrestling programs at the local level, especially in smaller programs.

Subset is how HS recruiting is harming those programs by poaching the better talent. And that "duals titles" drive that recruiting.

He makes some good points.

"Perhaps?" I'd say "definitely" and "should have" (been). We are talking about a man in his late 30s calling out a kid for "moving more than a trucking company". Seriously??? It's indefensible and incredibly unprofessional. I know a lot of you guys like Willie (I've never met him) but try to see past that.

Hit the nail on the head with Manville. Wrestling is the catalyst for much bigger life goals.

As far as HS recruiting goes ... I'm aware of 2 cases of cherry picking between families. All 4 of these wrestlers are D1 rostered or recruits.

(1) Older brother goes private, younger brother turned away. Family goes along with it (easy commute probably didn't hurt).

(2) Younger brother recruited, family tells private school they have to take the older brother too. School says no. Both kids stay home. Older brother went Ivy, so it wasn't an academic decision by the school.

Interesting, huh?

Anyway, let's not pretend recruiting is limited to the private schools.

I can count easily on my fingers and toes the families in PA that ran into this and it continues to happen.

I get the "what's best for the program" mentality. The problem with that thinking is schools do not exist for what is best for the school. Schools exist for the betterment of kids.
The Manville family did what they believed best for Mason. Willie's apparent belief that what the family did is somehow wrong - he is mistaken in his conclusion on right and wrong and also on whether it is any of his business.

Willie should simply apologize to Manville and move on getting ready for nationals.

At least Dad and Carson are in Shakopee, MN, not anywhere in VA. Unless, of course, they moved back, already.
Carson was centimeters away from being stuck in the state quarterfinals, but ended up winning the whole tournament. Really fun to watch.

I'll hold Willie's fries & Coke for him while he does ROTC drills & wrestling practice with Mason all day.
