Introducing Myself.

Great to hear! Sounds like he hasn't changed at all. Good for him.

Hopefully he doesn't have too many facial scars from letting the 1986 Milton team cut off his playoff beard with scissors at the postseason family night.

If you live life long enough, it's hard to remember the source of all of one's scars. :)

He used to do something like that with the team nearly every season. You can really motivate a group of guys when you let them cut off your hair if they reach the team goal. I'd give Cael the idea but.... :D:p

That first championship. The deal was if they won a championship Cael had to compete for a US world team spot. No hair to trade, but as effective.
Welcome to the board.

Thank you, nitlion for that memory [jog]. I had forgotten that cool tidbit. I wonder to what percentage did Cael really want to compete, and to what percentage he was just paying off a bet and paying the bill for the NCAA title.

If I remember correctly, Cael was preaching the "good enough to be, just gotta walk the path" sermon when the team started throwing that back at him. So he said deal.
I am pretty sure he understood there was a better than small chance he was going to have to meet their challenge, but not sure of the egg, chicken, first sequence.

This is a great story that I've always wanted to know more details about.

Concerning my dad, I don't think he ever used him competing as a motivator (but quite possible). He usually stuck to shaving his head/beard, writing the team names on his orange van, walking home from a dual meet, having an after-season ice cream party, etc.

He did compete in AAU tournaments until at least age 50. I was his 10-year-old cornerman for some memorable times. Ahh, the time he almost bit off his tongue... I wish I had the results because I'm pretty sure he beat some pretty good wrestlers at these tourneys too. I recall one kid that I think was a starter at either Lehigh or Lock Haven.

Just out of curiosity did Smythe ever retire and who is coaching the defenders now

Yes. Coach Smythe retired a few years ago. He coached for over 40 seasons and was pretty high on the state total victories list. Current head coach is Jeremy Betz.
