I find this interesting - ESPN has Iowa #3 in it's power rankings (we're #5):
ESPN: "When Iowa's offense shows up, the Hawkeyes are a playoff contender. They gained 440 yards and put up 30 points on Kent State, and that was more than enough for an Iowa defense that sacked Golden Flashes quarterback Dustin Crum seven times (Lukas Van Ness and Joe Evans led the way with two each)."

247Sports: Hawkeyes running back Tyler Goodson pounded the opposition into submission with 153 yards rushing and three touchdowns as Iowa once again separated itself from the rest of its side of the Big Ten with another dominant performance. Kirk Ferentz sees something special in this year's team and rightfully so with stellar play on both sides of the football up to this point.

The defense is great, but the offense has hardly been stellar. Maybe they were Saturday - I didn't see it. But it seems a lot of people nationally are invested in this narrative of Iowa being great. Maybe it's just that everyone's tired of the usual suspects in the playoff. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Iowa must have had some interns sleep with the nerd UM-grad flunkies running the B1G scheduling office, because their schedule, is easier than 💩💩💩

Who gets such a schedule? They have no difficult away games, and aside from PSU, their home schedule looks like a Betty Crocker cupcake.

They’d better hope they don’t make playoffs, they would be beat senseless…would make Notre Dame look competitive…

I respect Iowa, we will not beat them easily (if at all), but their schedule is the equivalent of the ACC scheduling. Complete and utter BS.

Is worth noting that Iowa State shot themselves in the foot with a billion turnovers. If not for those turnovers, Iowa St. wins that game. There are good turnovers (kudos to great defensive play) and there are bad turnovers (complete flukes, completely unfortunate events and bone headed plays)…all of the Iowa St. turnovers were just bad.

@Maryland on a Friday night the week before they play us is the definition of "trap game". Routine gets off, undefeated opponent with an offense that can challenge you, and a late start.

Hosting us is going to be tough. We've had their number, other than the covid year, under JF.

Bye week before they go to Wisconsin. Wisky has won 6 of the last 8. (Rivalry resumed yearly after not playing for two years, hence why I stopped at 8).

Nothing, yet, that stands out on the back end. If the West falls apart and cannibalizes itself, they might not play a winning team all of November.

The entire BIG West is a joke and it was made to be that way and everyone knows it. When you have Northwestern playing for the championship multiple times, you know it’s a joke.

Most years, it is weaker.

It's geographically true though. Unless you go to a North South split, you can't shift the power balance. Heck, swapping Michigan and Sparty for Purdue and Illinois really doesn't do much for the West the last 4-5 years.

With OSU dominating the same time frame, it's still irrelevant.

Wisconsin seems like a pretty difficult away game to me (I think we've got a really solid team this year, and they outplayed us for much of the game and took us to the wire).

Your second paragraph is stupid.

Your second paragraph is stupid.

Fan 1: we gotta win the turnover battle or we will lose.

Fan 1's team wins with turnovers: woohoo! Forced you into errors with superior play! We are the better team.

Fan 1's team loses because of turnovers: eh, they weren't that good. We gifted em the points. Win this game 9 outta 10 times.

---

Iowa is opportunistic and tend to make teams pay in the quick turnaround. It's been a vital part of your team this year and definitely was in our game last year.

I look for us to get your base defense on the field against our 4/5 wide looks and try to run tempo left to right then back left. A lot of motion with our RBs to get in and out of bubble screens, flat outs, and our run plays. Dotson likely alternating between the slot or outside, motioning you were Yurcich wants to attack.

If your DEs have early rush success, TEs stay in to chip and release.

Think we'll use our 2 RB set a little more. Lead block the outside zone, flare em out of the back field. Keep the OLBs occupied.

I think it's going to be a great game. Hopefully we both take care of business and it turns into a top 5 matchup (cheering for the Razorbacks over A&M to set that up).

I don't completely agree with it, but I will say this - Iowa State usually plays much worse against Iowa than they do against anyone else. I think it gets worse the longer the streak goes. Campbell looks so tense and I'm sure that carries over to his players, especially the upper-classmen starters. Iowa deserves some credit, but Purdy has started a lot of games and he looked bad while his backup looked pretty good. Iowa played well, but they had some help.

Respect them as a team, but their fans are the worst. Already ripping us and Franklin on their message board. Hopefully they can stay unbeaten until we roll into town.

Jesus, what are you, some kind of football coach? Lol. seriously though, that’s a pretty good read and will look forward to chatting more with you all here in a couple weeks. Hopefully we both win our games and make it a potential top 5 matchup. That would be fun.

You don’t think there is a reason for that? Iowa actually plays defense unlike a majority of the teams in the big 12. I will agree with you that there is way more pressure on isu than Iowa lately. Isu is clearly pressing while Iowa just lets the game come to them. Iowa knows it is just a matter of time before isu makes a mistake. That’s good coaching, not luck.

As far as your comment about the back up. Come on man. You have been in Iowa long enough and seen enough ferentz coached games to know he gets a comfortable lead and goes full blown conservative, grind the clock mode. Iowa wasn’t even pressuring the ab once it went 27-10. In fact, most of the time they were only rushing 2-3 lineman and were in full blown contain mode, and you know it.

Outside of Iowa going stupid to end the half with the prevent d and letting isu March down the field to score, Iowa was in complete control of that game. Period.

It's weird how any thread about Iowa is responded to by an Iowa fan within a couple of hours. Thread started at 11:29PM. Iowa fan post at 12:43AM. They must work in shifts to monitor other message boards.

It’s weird that you cry like a baby about an Iowa fan posting in a thread about Iowa.

No crying at all. Just weird how you guys are always hanging around. I see it's still your shift. When does the next Iowa fan take over??

For whatever reason, I've really started to dislike Iowa over the last ten years. I don't mind Kirk Ferentz, he's pretty mild mannered and does more with less. Maybe it was the way they treat guests, especially us in 2012 - they seem to have a really classless fanbase. There was also the racism scandal, with a bunch of former players saying the staff was discriminatory. They also play a cake schedule every year, but never seem to win anything ever.

Iowa is a school that should pray the BIG never realigns because they will fall into mediocrity-bottom barrel pretty quickly.

Keep it coming. I read the thread over your way. It had good discussion. I think fans going to rival boards don't understand that Iowa analysis is going to have a Hawkeye slant regardless. Its fine tho. As long as it's kept clean, I'll toss the pigskin with anybody.

I'll hopefully get to watch all of your game vs Maryland. From what little I've seen, your retooled DL has been impressive. They are getting sacks without a superstar type.

My curiosities are:

-how will y'all play our 4/5 wide sets? Maintain the 2 high safety look and flare your LBs or come down to matchup?

-will you blitz? Wisconsin did the entire game. Auburn did when they anticipated run, and on a few passes. Wisky got home more than Auburn. Wisky LBs were overall more impressive as well.

-how do you think your QB matches up? Mertz had all conference praise and it seems we quieted that down. Nix played one of his better road games, but he still couldn't stretch the field. Our defense is successfully making adjustments this year. Probably at a higher rate, this early, of any year under Franklin.

Iowa’s has played 3 solid college QBs, all with accolades, all with hype. All three have been benched. Lucky, or causal?

I would suspect some 4-2-5 with Belton as the cash.

probably blitz 15-20% of passing downs if it’s 3rd and long an they aren’t getting home with 4

petras won’t stretch the field often enough for Iowa’s fans. Expect a field position game. Iowa’s punter is outstanding, return game above average to good

Hey Nitts! Fun to read this and many other threads on your website; I'd like to throw out a few comments based on posts that seem to have some traction here:

1) The quality of posts on Iowa websites has taken a definite dive over the past 5 years; I can barely stand to go there myself. Hawkeye Nation used to be one of the best websites I've seen nationally 5-10 years ago. Now it seems to be populated by 7th graders, or at least posters with 7th grade mentality. I think this is reflective of social media across the board; have you guys experienced the same?

2) Don't base your assessment of the Iowa fan base (or any group of people) on what shows up on a website. What counts isn't what eminates from a keyboard in someone's basement, but what you experience first hand. If you'd come to Kinnick for a game I think you'd find you'd be treated with respect and hospitality unless you're looking for a fight. Sure, you might experience some good-natured ribbing, but I've personally witnessed several instances where Iowa fans have policed their own when things have crossed the line. There are knuckleheads in every stadium; I apologize if you've been the recipient of bad behavior. I'm personally honored to see other fans come to our stadium to support their teams.

3) My neighbor still raves about his experience going to Happy Valley 8-10 years ago: Penn State students buying him and his buddies beer the night before the game at one of the bars. Said the tailgating setting was second to none. Why do some get so offended that other teams' fans come to your site to try to get another perspective on an upcoming game?

4) This is shaping up to be one of the most wide open Big 10 seasons in years; let's embrace it! There may be a team that emerges we're not even considering yet. Every contender has its warts along with its strong points. I just hope it strengthens the league as a whole to prepare us for another strong postseason. Look forward to keeping up with your team's progress through continued civil conversations on this site.

I'm not going to forgive or forget the stuff I've seen from iowa keyboards the last few years.

We have to play iowa but we don't have respect iowa.

All the posters here are former Eagle Scouts....imagine a BWI poster being upset with criticism of James Franklin? Thanks for the solid post!

Yeah but you left off our first 2 games which were ranked opponents. Do I think we a re a top 5 team? Not really, but you have to go off who you have beat and I'm not sure there is a team or many that has had more impressive wins thus far. That will change as the season goes on. In any case, Penn St will be a tough game. It's a home game so that is good for us, hopefully we give you guys a good game.

LOL...these guys posting on this board are perfect gentlemen (Ladies) compared to the Hawkeye fans on the wrestling board since Cael Sanderson came to Penn State.
