Ira lubert wants to open a casino at the nittany mall

really a non-story. The ubiquitous Indian (err, native American) casinos have diluted organized gambling. Consultants went from Maine to San Diego exploiting the independence of native American reservations for gambling and they prospered. There was no way to stop it. Now, the damage of gambling has already been realized. This mall thingy is a nat on an elephant's ass. Immaterial. Too little, too late.

I’ve never understood the public’s fascination with casinos. I suppose it’s the rush. But the longer you gamble the more likely you are to lose. The “science” of casinos is pretty interesting - the ding ding noises of the “slots”, the lighting, no windows or clocks, knowing which machines to place where, the free booze and the cleavage of the cocktail girls. I remember seeing a billboard on the Walt Whitman bridge advertising a casino in AC as having the “loosest slots in town” - an interesting obvious (to me) sexual reference. It’s all geared towards separating the customer from their money. I’ve attended business conferences in Vegas and walking through casino floors at 8:00 AM and seeing people who haven’t been to bed yet. Its not exactly James Bond in Casino Royale. It seems so desperate. It’s just crazy. And how much do you have to bet to make it interesting? You’re more likely to go broke than get rich. I’d rather buy something nice than put serious money at risk. And if it’s not serious money, it’s just boring.

I suppose I enjoy watching horse racing but it’s just because I like watching horses run. I still wouldn’t bet more than $5 per race, and I know many races are fixed or at least the outcomes manipulated. Maybe I’m in the minority as gambling seems to be a popular past time for many people. Just not my thing.
100%! If you can’t do math and understand the odds....just ask yours ‘How do they afford to build these extravagant castles, give away drinks, comp rooms, pay a ton of people if every body is winning?’
Hate casinos. Commercials show tons of excitement, people having a great time, lots of fun.......but walk through one and look at the hundreds on the bandit machines......they are bored as hell, looking all around while reflexively pushing buttons. Quite sad, actually.

There's a reason sports teams weren't allowed in Vegas all this time. This is not good for PSU or State College.

"In this age, though, it’s more likely you’ll see -- or not see -- casino chips as a payoff. Casinos are everywhere. Chips can be handed out like nickels. Hey, if they’re worth $500, all the better. Illicit money can be laundered through a donation to a church or a non-profit organization. Once it gets there, the cash descends down a rabbit hole the NCAA has a hard time reaching."

Touch on state lotteries and the promises they've made over the years that never materialize. It's nothing short of a fatass joke.

Some guy gets picked up for playing dice on the street, but it's ok for the State to do it? Not in my version of a Free Republic it isn't.

same is true in Ohio...waste of time and money...last gasps for buildings that have been built and no longer have a purpose. It is going to get worse as COVID creates an exodus from US cities, not total but still massive, and building drop in value

Would enjoy reading impact report and Q&A’s but links do not connect to anything. Township Manager says tax income increases and no traffic issues. Wonder what else is in it.

Judas Joyner is in need of a job. He will likely have a "prominent" position. He's a "people person" and would be a huge asset to Tsar Ira the Terrible.

Well the mall's traffic is probably 1/10th of its peak, so I can see where there'd be no traffic issues

huh? I'm not a big fan of The Joint, but he doesn't need a job. He's currently the Executive Director and Senior Vice President of Andrews Institute for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, in Pensacola, FL.

It's kind of unfortunate what's taken place between Joyner and many PSU fans since 2011. Before that time, he was somebody that was looked upon by most PSU fans as an excellent representation of the success that many of JoePa's players achieved post their college football career. He accomplished a great deal in his medical field. He was elected to several terms as an alumni-elected trustee on the PSU BOT. His son used to post on this board. Etc.

Dave Jones penned a piece in 2017 about how Joyner deserved some love and respect for PSU's survival and revival since 2011. I think Jones glossed over some things with that piece, and either disregarded other things or was unaware of them when he penned that article. (Or, perhaps he was just being his contrarian self, who always thinks he's the smartest guy in the room. Who knows?) Personally, I would enjoy an opportunity to speak with Joyner, and at least hear his side of the story. However, I'm far from having moved into the camp of what Jones advocated for in his article. https://www.pennlive.com/pennstatefootball/2017/04/penn_state_dave_joyner_bill_ob.html

Why does anyone care if Lubert opens a casino? If you don’t like it, don’t go there. If you want to gamble now you have somewhere to do it. You can gamble everywhere now, including on your smart phone. You can sit in the BJC and place your bet if you want to. Really, it’s no big deal.

Sadly this probably isn't that far off from the mindset of many.

Great way to end an article “sometines good, sometimes devastating.” I believe it to be a good thing for the area and for that part of town. It’s coming. Embrace it and be part of the solution. The SC area most of us knew is flipping to a pure college town with very few facilities for adults to go, eat, or shop. It’s all about students. High rises going up looking like DC. The area is finally becoming a destination besides PSU.

One flaw Dear Old State has is with elevating 'accomplished' alumni too much, giving them relatively unaccountable authority, 'keys to the kingdom'. Although Peetz, Frazier, Joyner, and even Matt Millen (I include him because of his public voice and influencer position) have accomplished much professionally, made themselves and others a lot of money, and I wish them well and good health, personally I have no desire to hear or read their names beyond a final blip in the Alumni magazine section that starts with an 'O'.

Joyner had no business being appointed AD. Not only did he have no experience for the job, when the University is being accused of a cover-up, you do NOT fill the position from within.
