Ok, here is what I have:

HP Officejet Pro 6968 **Out of warranty.

It has worked fine up until now.

I noticed that it started "ghost printing" or just printing a select number of 'lines' of a page, etc.

Once in a great while, it printed the entire page correctly.

Printer cartridges were reading 'low' but black one was almost out so I bought a new black cartridge.

Installed it.

Same result - won't even 'copy' a page now. Comes out completely blank.

Called HP in India (where else) tried disconnecting all power to printer. Tried cleaning off gold-colored electronic connector on bottom of all cartridges. Blue, red, yellow and black. Reinstalled them,.....didn't help.

But low-and-behold I can have a NEW HP Officejet Pro # 8710 shipped to my door directly for $154.99 !! Imagine that!!!

Bottom line, is HP making products to 'fail' or instruction them to fail to FORCE the purchase of an newer version??

Better question, can anybody help me get around this in some way perhaps??

Mr. HP in India said that re-installing printer driver would not help either.

I'll hang up now and listen for your responses.

Thank you!!

**I NEVER ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM LIKE THIS IN THE PAST. MAN, MY OLD PRINTER JUST RAN AND RAN FOR YEARS WITHOUT THIS BS.

FWIW there are some out there that when the printer runs out of ink, they just buy a new one. Why? You can get a pretty good printer for around $80, the inks to refill my printer are around $80.
Just saying.

The model you own costs $90 on amazon.

HP has adopted what is called the Gillette safety razor marketing srtategy of the 1950s. Back then they would give you the razor for free or next to free and make their money selling you over priced blades. HP sells the printer for cost ot less than cost and makes money by charging you $75 for a couple oz of ink.

I purchased a decent level HP laser for less than 300 and instead of paying over $200 for a HP 26X cartridge I buy knock offs from Amazon for about 35 or 40 dollars. The print quality is just as good and even they are both rated at 9000 pages if anything the knock offs last longer.

I'll have to remember that.

I get the ink for a few dollars a cartridge on eBay from China. About 1 in 5 inks just doesn’t work out too good, and I get refunded for it. But 10 carts cost the same as one genuine one. My mom just buys a new printer every few years, and the old one gets recycled. “Back in her day” they made things to last 50 years, but you don’t make money selling something that lasts that long.

My Staples man says you must use inkjet printers regularly to keep them in good working order. Otherwise, the print heads get gummed up. Lasers, on the other hand, don't need that. Don't know but I use my printers at least once a week. So far so good

Was told the same things. We get our cartridges refilled at Costco for a third of what Staples charges for new ones. No problems so far and we have three printers in the house. That said, I don't expect any of them top last more than 3-4 years, though two have been around longer.

UPDATE: Just purchased I new printer Model # 8710 from the Casper Wyoming store.

Thanks for all responses!

I appreciate it.

Do yourself a favor and return it, then buy a cheap laser printer. I bought a cheap HP laser printer about 12 years ago for $50 from Staples. About every 1500 pages I would add toner and clean out the cartridge for a few bucks. Then, as the printer got older, the prices for the cartridges dropped to about ~$10-15, so I just buy those now. The funny thing is all the important print components are in the cartridge, so it's like getting a new printer every time I put a new cartridge in it. I bought a wireless Brother laser printer, again for ~$50 from Staples, about 10 years ago for my now 82 year old parents. Same situation for them.

I no longer buy HP. The print heads wear out...get gummed up. Only solution was to get a new printer. After having it happen a couple of times, I purchased an EPSON WF3520. It wasn't expensive...Low $100's. Have had it a few years...and still works like a charm. Ink cartridges are like $15/ea...and you can buy after market cheaper. I'll never buy another HP.

Sort of related but we started using the HP Instant Ink feature at the end of December. We pay a monthly subscription based on the number of pages we print and HP sends us new cartridges when ours are running low. Honestly I don't know how cost effective it is but after running out of ink several times at very inopportune moments and having to pay more for the ink than the printer cost, this idea had saved us some headaches. So to me it's worth it.

Why yes, I'd love the extended warranty!

just get a brother B&W laser for <$100 and you'll be good to go for years.

Get a Brother printer and buy the ink online its under $20 for the ink cartridge replacements. We send out around 3500 double sided flyers + print the address on the envelopes a month and ours lasted over a year before giving out. We bought another one and it is going strong nearly 8 months in. Great printer in my experience.

This. I don't print enough stuff at home to keep an inkjet running properly without the ink drying up. Brother printers are cheap, and they readily accept off brand (cheap) replacement toner. I got a cheap wireless one and it's been flawless for years despite only occasional use. Laser printers are way better than inkjet if you are only printing on rare occasions.

Or if you print a lot of black only pages. I have two brother laser printers -- bought one several years ago and bought a second to have air print capability for iPads and iPhones.
