Where do I find the old thread on all the places one has gotten a “We Are”?

Was in Staunton, VA Sunday night at a popular restaurant, repping PSU gear. A couple from Centre Hall approached me and we traded our PSU alliances. I think they were professors, but I might be wrong.

what restaurant?... I drive around Staunton several times every month on my way to/from Highland County and Henrico County. There was a decent microbrew on the bypass that I frequented (forgotten name) but unfortunately the head brew master moved on..

Mill Street Grill

I highly recommend it and it was highly recommended to me. Ribs and brisket especially

Ah, Staunton, pronounced Stanton. I spent the summer of 82 in the Valley, and my first week was spent at a Holiday Inn right by Mary Baldwin College. Wearing PSU gear around generally got me an "FU Yankee". The Statler Brothers grew up in Staunton and every July 4th would hold a free concert in the park, which was usually attended by another well known Country Band/Singer. I saw a few, including one with Crystal Gayle. Summer of 82 not one US flag was flying anywhere around there on the 4th.

In my first couple years living in Santa Barbara CA I remember a big football game, maybe a bowl game. A PSU alumni group advertised that they would be watching the game at a downtown bar called the Santa Barbara Brewing Company. The place was packed... almost surreal to be in a bar in central coast CA and feel like you are at the Phyrst for a post game table wars type environment.

I’ll never forget something that happened way back in summer of 1979. I was hiking with some friends way up in Rocky Mountain National Park and we were on a trail that was coming to the top of a small hill. We were almost to the top when a guy came towards us from the other side of the hill. It was an old friend who I knew from Harrisburg who also went to Penn State! We recognized each other almost immediately and talked for some time about what we each had been doing since graduating. Think about the odds of that happening considering both the time and distance involved.

PS - this happened long before WE ARE got started.

Is the Phyrst still around? Always a great time there in the early 80s. Peanut shells on the floor to soak up the beer. Whenever I go into a bar with a strong smell of beer, I think of the Phyrst.

Lots of Penn Staters in South Carolina. Even more Steeler fans. I have never gotten one disrespectful comment while wearing a PSU sweatshirt (constantly from Nov-Feb) except one. I had a neighbor across the street who liked to get on me about Sandusky and PSU. His alma mater? Notre Dame. You can't make it up. He couldn't see the glass houses all around him.

I've gotten the We Are greeting in Iceland, Israel, France and most recently Ireland.. It is pretty much a sure thing at this point.. if you wear PSU gear while abroad..

Got one from a guy at an Inverness Scotland bar last month. He was dancing with a blow up doll/woman with his ex-wife’s face taped to the head. He yelled “we are” when he saw my PSU wrestling hat. I had to think twice, but, after assessing the situation I gave a hearty PENN STATE. During a band break he opined on the advantages of a blow up wife.

I was lifting and at the same time I would go into the gym to workout a local priest would generally show up. I was raised catholic but don't attend mass so the way we became friends was being at the gym together so often. We had many discussions and there would be times one of us would take different sides of a point just to banter and argue with the other.
He is a Michigan fan and we were going back and forth about college football and I don't recall what was said about PSU and the Big10, but my response was the Big10 between 1968 and 1993 was without a single national championship and viewed nationally as a football little sister. Probably a step below the pre UM and FSU ACC. Hell in that 25 year period they only won 7 Rose Bowls. It took PSU joining that conference and face stomping everybody for Michigan and OSU to understand what championship football looked like. The only thing I ever want to hear out of a Wolverine or Buckeye fan is a thank-you.

He looked at a little stunned and, and said, "you mean back when Sandusky was free to prowl the locker room?"

I just looked at him and said "you know what really bothered about Penn State's response to the whole Sandusky mess? I can't believe they called up the Vatican and ask for their playback on how to deal with in house pedophiles."

Left him silent.

My time in Staunton was 1982. It's substantially different in the Shenandoah Valley today than it was back then.

I was visiting my dad in Massachusetts a few summers ago and we went to a beach in Scituate. Being a PSU alum, I wore one of my Penn State wrestling shirts and as I was walking down to a point on a wave break wall I heard “We are!” I reactively said “Penn State!” in a somewhat enthusiastic tone because I was watching my footing on the rocks. I look up and a 40-50 year old lady strides right up to me with her kid and says she saw my PSU shirt and couldn’t help herself. We got to talking and come to find out that she went to PSU Altoona then moved back to Mass after graduation.

Sometime in the early 2000s, I got transferred to California. We were out looking at homes with our realtor and after we had seen several and passed, the realtor says I have one that I think will work perfectly for you. As we drove up to the house, my wife (not a PSU alum) immediately noticed the neighbors garage door “We Are Penn State” banner and said “hell no, I’ll never see him if we buy this place”.

Still in business. Still has big wood door on Street level and I think the pipe going down stairway that I cleaned my head off a few times. That's where I ended up the night Penn State beat Nebraska. I wasn't a student but I knew a football trainer and he got us tickets in the parents section. I think they were RB Jon Williams allotted tickets??

Been there a bunch of times. Head that way towards Lexington and Winchester for horse shows and friends.

I was just back there in July. No more shells on the ground. Still have the stage, but it smells like a brand new building. The ole stale beer smell on the concrete is gone! Lol. They really cleaned the place up.

Question: Did you all go to Penn State?

I did not, but I have been known to wear Penn State logoed gear on occasion. When traveling recently I sometimes had a PSU pull over on, and sometimes a PSU wrestling t-shirt, prompting a "We Are" at breakfast, and a waiter who barely spoke English approach me to ask if it was "the school". Finally, in the airport on the way home while winding back and forth through the line to customs apparently someone kept saying "We Are" to me but I did not notice (my wife told me later).

The reason I ask is, not having gone to Penn State, I find it very awkward to respond because there is no we in this situation.

I consider the PSU fanbase as a huge part of the "we are" regardless of where they went to school. Sounds like you spend a good amount supporting them financially by buying gear and other things. You deserve to be a "We"...

Point well taken. I have dropped a few bucks on the NLWC over the years, as well. Just got my Jordan Conway thank you email last week.

Funny financial support story.

My dad is a Villanova grad, as is my daughter. She became a huge Nova basketball fan while there, and would probably leave her husband for Jay Wright. One day I am having breakfast and, lo and behold, who is sitting next to my wife and I but Jay Wright and his wife. I did not have my phone with me and could not take a pic. I immediately knew I was in big trouble with my daughter. The wives strike up a conversation about something or other. As the conversation proceeds Mrs. Wright asks me if I went to Villanova. I tell her, "no, but my dad, my daughter, and my money went to Villanova". That got a big laugh out of Jay (I like to think we are on a first basis now).

Hopefully, it's officially licensed (not bootlegged). If so, consider yourself a modest financial contributor and part of the 'we.'
I find it very awkward to respond because there is no we in this situation.
I am an aging PSU grad and lifetime alumni member, who is largely oblivious to my wardrobe du jour. When I am wearing PSU gear, I often have to have a 'We are..." repeated right in my face. When I notice, I kindly respond without checking for miniature diplomas or alumni member cards.

i saw an NLWC hoodie at the philly zoo last weekend and gave an emphatic "We are!"

I am a fan of penn state wrestling and a fan of penn state wrestling would reply; pennstate. Or at least I would.

My girlfriend thought it was something else with the amount of "We Are's" I got at this years Daytona 500. I went odd ball and wore a PSU Wrestling t-shirt instead of my vintage Dale Earnhardt swag..
I heard Daytona is one of the best. My in-laws won a pair of vip tickets to Poconos. We were right on Pitt road walking right by the pitt crew (I thought it was fricking awesome!) So we had good a good view of what we wanted but I get why it is a bad spectating track due to the 3 turn layout.

I'm no racing fan, I couldn't tell you 5 drivers names. But the experience of the racing fans and the race itself is 10x better than any live sports and I've done em all except basketball. Which I hope I never have to suffer through.

I want to make super clear that I am not making anything political, here. Milo is is cooky. But wild that he's being interviewed by none other than pharma bro villain Martin Shkreli about Kanye West of all things... in a PSU wrestling shirt lol.

Nah, the best was Silver Spring raceway. You could watch the dirt track racing or the drive-in movie right next to the track from the grandstand.

Holy sasdfadfd, I love this thread!

I've gotten We Ares or responses in, among others, Australia, NZ, Thailand & Slovenia--in the Škocjan Caves!

And I love Staunton, Mill Street Grill & Zynodoa! @a_mshaffer, hi! My FIL has property in Highland County and we LOVE it out there! Ping me sometime, at jtothemfp at gmail? Would love to see if you know him. I understand it's the least-populated (per sq mile) & highest elevated county in VA (I think ;)
