If you recall, we had 3 of the top 10 in 1994 with Ki Jana, Kerry Collins and Brady. Assuming we are not hit with the injury bug this season, Saquon Barkley is almost a certain top 5 pick, and Gesicki is likely a top 10 pick. There are lots of NFL teams that are probably already druling over having Gesicki on their team, as he looks like the next Gronkowski! Also, if Blacknall steps it up and shows what he did in the Wisconsin game most of this upcoming season, he too could be a 1st round draft pick! An exciting season is about to begin, so buckle up your seat belts and enjoy the ride!

while they are both talented players, the problem I see is the value the NFL puts on those positions. It might not be a stretch to take an RB in the top 5, but it is more rare than it is the norm, but it is a stretch to take a TE in the top 10. That said, they may both go in the first round.

In the 2000 NFL draft Courtney Brown was picked #1 overall and Lavar Arrington #2. So Penn State having two picks in the top 10 is not new. You can't beat having two picked #1 and #2 overall.

Saquon is obviously too 10 or top 5 talent. Not sure that Gesicki will be top 10. Don't think teams put a premium on TE and as a result TEs usually don't get picked that early. He is still a one trick pony. Excellent pass catcher but suspect blocker. Think he would need to take a gigantic leap forward with blocking to be picked in first round. He is probably the 3-4 best TE on the board in 2018 right now. The Wisky, Fl and Wake TEs are above him right now.

TE Kyle Brady was chosen 9th (just to give you a hard time:)).

yea okay, and what year was that?? The NFL has changed since then, and the value they put on positions.
Ditka, Riley Odoms, Ron Kramer, Kellen Winslow III, Eric Ebron and Vernon Davis were all chosen in the top ten. With Brady that makes seven TEs chosen in the top ten. I think that proves your top ten point.

Since 2007 only six TEs have been selected in the first round.

Mike G went from one of the more disappointing players in 2015 to quite possibly THE most improved player in 2016.

Hopefully he will continue to improve this fall. With all the early defections each year from college to the NFL, I can't see him going in the first round.....but he certainly has a very reasonable chance to go in the late-second or early-third round.

We might be setting our expectations too high to meet...

Personally I don't see Gesicki as a top 10. Late 1st/2nd round pick in my opinion.

Of course it's possible -- So you're saying there's a chance. The question is how likely.

I'd love to see it.

But first, I want to make sure we see the 2016 MG and not the 2015 (hands of stone) MG. He dropped several key balls in 2015.

Second, he isn't a good blocker. That is why JoeMo split him out a little. As a very good receiver, the defender had to go out on him which was, effectively, a block taking the defender out of run support. To be drafted in the first half of the first round, he going to have to show he is more than 1-dimensional. He's going to have to add bulk and stick his nose in there.

SB no doubt. Gesicki, not a chance unless he makes a giant leap this season. T

I don't think expectations are too high. The NFL sees what Billichek has done with Gronkowski as a deep threat TE, and I truly believe that Gesicki is every bit as good, if not better. Therefore, the value placed on a TE like Gesicki is even higher than past years. Having said all that, I love that scene you provided from My Cousin Vinny. One of the funniest movies ever made :)

Kyle Brady was drafted #9 by Rich Kotite and he (Kotite) hasn't been employed since.

That's been a huge factor in TE draft value.

HEY Ritchie ... BOO!

We'll see how fast Gesicki runs. He's 6'6 250 with good hands and great jumping ability. His blocking did improve as the season went on. Plenty of all pro tight ends don't have to be great blockers.. Appears to work hard, showed he's plenty tough by playing hurt in the OSU game and being productive and can go up and make a play on the ball if given a chance. I think he's a much better athlete than Jesse James who went in the 5th and has been a productive NFL tight end. I think his stock will continue to climb as he puts up huge numbers this year. If he has one on one coverage all year and doesn't have to stay in and block, he should become the ultimate safety valve. He's the forgotten guy in our offense and he'll push to be an All-American.
