Jared verklereen

I really like this kid. Great article. Maybe this is why he wrestles the way he does lime even keel the whole way through. Hard to imagine how he wrestles at this level says a lot about his mental preparation and perseverance.

I'm glad to say that I've never been critical of Verkleeren (partly because I knew he was diabetic, partly because I think he does a pretty good job and partly because I just don't expect him to have the offense of a Nolf or Taylor), but this definitely does explain his style a lot. I never really understood the disease and didn't know that he had to keep such an even keel before or during a match, for fear of falling on his face. Lots of heroes on the PSU wrestling team (and wrestling in general) and Mr. Verkleeren is clearly one of them.

My younger sister who is now 53 was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 12. She went on to Letter 9 times in Field Hockey, Basketball and Softball. She received a scholarship to be goalie for Del Val.
I witnessed the ebb and flow of the disease and what she dealt with as an athlete.
She has had the disease for over 40 years and now is starting to be ravaged by the battle. She is starting to lose her eyesight and the neuropathy in her feet is getting much worse.
I cannot think of a more difficult sport to compete at on a national stage with type 1 diabetes.
Well done Jared.

Great article. I wouldn't be critical of a wrestler with or without this because if you've ever wrestled you know how hard it is. The D1 level is incredibly difficult so to just be standing on the mat in the first place is difficult enough. All of our guys deserve our support win or lose and don't deserve the criticism they often receive.

I've known of his diagnosis since he started here and have always found it amazing that he can balance his insulin needs/sugars/and energy/strength levels enough to compete.. Has to have some effect on him for a match.

Humanizes the wrestler, and for fans, provides an insight into the challenges he faces. Jared is a great young man, from a very, very nice family, and an inspiration to his fellow wrestlers.

yes this has been know for a while but in today's world I definitely think we needed the reminder.

this could certainly explain his crazy move attempt with seconds remaining in the Leigh match if his blood sugar spiked because he mentally was celebrating a "win" or the adrenaline kicked in because he thought he had to get another take-down. .

Inapprppriate. Even if it's a joke that fell flat.

There's a time and place for everything, and this isn't it.

Not the right time and place? He wasn't just diagnosed, so by that logic, there is no time or place. If the mere mention of Busiello didn't set you off every time, I probably wouldn't have said anything at all. Your love for PA wrestlers is admirable, but my God man!

I think what he meant by time and place was:
1. Place is thread discussing Jarod's disease.
2. Time is people commenting on his struggle with said disease.
3. And you are bringing up a potential replacement for that young man.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok, but El Jefe is going to hit Busiello with an ADA lawsuit.

Glad this article was written. Have been aware of Jarod's condition for several years. But never knew, in the detail provided, the extent to which it dictated his wrestling style.
On a positive note. He seemed tremendously calm against Rutgers and noticeably had his breathing under control. It was before I read the article and had full understanding but my thought at the time was that his conditioning was really dialed in.
Great kid and competitor. Glad he's running out there for us.

The article really hits home the thought that you really don't know the fight and struggle that someone else may be going thru. We look at situations thru our eyes without true understanding of all the factors.

Yup. For example, LemonPie has a serious reason for being the way he is: the villain from Speed has wired a bomb to LemonPie’s heart. If LemonPie ever stops obnoxing people, the bomb will go off. :)

Seems like a great kid. Tough as hell. Watching him wrestle a fs match at us open while hes getting a 5 minute call to be on another mat for Greco match at same time. He wrestled like 4 or 5 matches in 2 hours that day at one point. Gave it all that day!

Awwe man...that just sucks. Hate to hear this...be right there hoping and praying for miracles for her. I witnessed my Dad struggling his entire life as well with the disease but he was more fortunate than your sister. And jeesh...she must have been a hell of an athlete to do all that while dealing with the disease. Btw, my niece is a freshman at DelVal playing basketball and softball. Sounds like she has some things in common with your sis.
