Jaylin Reed was penalized 15 yards following his game changing pick six because he gave the ball to his mother who sitting nearby in the stands.

And they returned the favor by calling a bogus holding call on PSU that wiped out big play a couple series later (even Mike Pierera commented that it didn't look like holding to him when Todd Blackledge said something about it).
The holding call was correct. The number given was wrong. Watch a replay and you will see a guy with a number in the 40s who was the real guilty player. It occurred less then 5 yards from the guy they mistakenly cited. Ref probably threw the flag and followed the rest of the play before looking back for the number.

By the letter of the rule, it was a penalty but someone would have to explain to me what is unsportsmanlike in that play. Maybe 5 yards for delay of game would be more appropriate. If he repeats the play against OSU I’d be ok with him doing it again. Any thoughts?
Any 15 yard penalty in a tight game is a potential game changer. Give mom the ball after the game.

Do teams still use their own ball?

By rule, the call was correct. That being said, on virtually every play there is a penalty that the officials choose to call or not call. This should have been a no call.

What about the holding penalty they called on Wisconsin that nullified a 50 yard punt return? Geez this victim role our fans play with the refs is getting old. Officials miss some calls it is part of the game not some grand conspiracy the league has against PSU.
But we know going into today’s game that there will be at least one questionable call that hurts a team and we also know which team will benefit….but I get it, officials miss calls (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

Didn't a DB from Virginia give the ball to his mother after a pick last week without being penalized?

Just hand the ball to the official like our players used to and there's no issue. This team is good, but not good enough to be helping their opponent with field position because of unnecessary stunts.
