Held on too long and game passed him by. Zone does not work with caliber of shooters in this age. No tears on this site, I am sure but won alot of games, NC and numerous FFs.

A zone is still an effective defense especially against teams that rely on size. Problem is you can’t run it all the time against everyone. Just like you can’t press all the time against everyone (as Huggins found out at WVU).

His 2-3 zone works well against smaller backcourts as well as neutralizing scoring in the middle. Successfull for 40 years against lesser talented teams. It never worked against UNC, Duke, UVA and even Pitt who were smarter and more physical. Boeheim's record since joining ACC is bad, not much over .500 if that. Colgate absolutely destroyed them this year. The zone needs quick players with long wing-spans to be effective. One weak link and it falls apart. His recruiting and transfer situation were also terrible for years, culminating with nepotism by selecting his low-skill son from Cornell over more talented players. Admins made right move.

I’m not disagreeing with you about Boeheim….I just think zone defenses can still be effective. I wish we would run it more often….we’ve used it occasionally and it’s been effective every time. Many coaches stay too long…Boeheim was one of them.

He’s no joe paterno that’s for sure.

Effing a$$hole

Agreed that he's an asshole but I wish anyone from Penn State handled the Sandusky situation the way he handle the Bernie Fine situation and is exactly how a person should have.

It’s funny watching ESPN (Jay Bilas and company) walking carefully over the news while praising Boeheim. No mention of him being fired- just “retired” today.

This is how Boeheim handled the Bernie Fine situation:

Not true--he went on the offensive instead of the pathetic way all parties, including Paterno, handled it. I rarely criticize Joe and I understand his health was an issue but Paterno and all of Penn State handled it horribly.

Because he TECHNICALLY wasn't "fired". After 47 years they'll force him to retire but wouldn't fire him

Well, in his post game presser he was asked if he’d be back and he said it was “up to the university”. Within hours he’s out and a new coach is already named in record time. They can call it what they want but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck……. ;)

Which is fine but the media shouldn't create the story which is what you're asking them to do. The statement was specific. It's weird you want them to report something else because I'm sure you complain when they do that in general.

Boeheim lashed out at the accusers. He called them liars and said they were seeking money.

“It is a bunch of a thousand lies that he has told,” Boeheim told ESPN, referring to Bobby Davis. “You don’t think it is a little funny that his cousin (relative) is coming forward?”

What are you talking about? The media doesn’t have to “create” anything. Just replay Boeheim’s press conference (which the reporters in the studio just did at halftime by the way). It is what it is.

Was he wrong?

What was announced? Syracuse likely gave him the option to retire/resign or be fired. As is standard practice. What are you talking about? The reporting is accurate and you're not happy with it.

Boeheim was forced to apologize and Syracuse fired Fine.

So what did you like about Boeheim's response? That he called accusers liars. That he apologized for doing that? That he said he knew nothing? Or that he said he's no Joe Paterno?

Per Boeheim post game today- “The university hired me and it’s their choice what they want to do.”…….. “It’s up to the university”. That’s not someone choosing to retire. So you agree- he was fired. Love the circular arguments here for no other reason than just to argue. 🙄

I said multiple times--he was told to retire or he'd be fire. Just like countless programs and companies do. Technically he resigned/retired.

Uhh huh. In his own words today- whether he came back was up to the university. He’s not coming back. Call it whatever makes you feel better but, at the end of the day, he was fired.

Again--in the press release did it say he was fired? Why are you complaining about how it is being reported when it's being reported as released?

Yeah because politically correct press releases are the standard to believe, not the words of the actual coach involved. 😂

For the record, the artfully worded press release doesn’t state how it happened, just that it happened. It says “….Today, as his 47th season coaching his alma mater comes to an end, so too does his storied career at Syracuse university. Associate head coach Adrian Autry, ‘94, one of Boeheim’s former players and long time assistant, has been named the program’s next coach.”

Jason la canfora has a radio show here in Baltimore. He’s a Syracuse alum and when they asked him about this today on the air, he basically said that he can’t stand Jim Boeheim because he’s a piece of shit. He went on about some other things, but it’s nothing any of us didn’t know, old Jimmy boy pees his pants, whines and lies.

Correct--no statement that he was fired--when coaches are fired it's made clear.

How didn't he? What do you think he did that was good?
Seriously? We’ll consider the following:
(1) Paterno immediately reported whatever the McQueary told to his boss, Curley. This resulted in Schultz contacting PSU’s attorney to specifically ask about the duty to report suspected abuse. The person obligated to report under the statute was the person in charge which was Spanier. Counsel later testified that he told Schultz or Spanier he wasn’t sure if it warranted a report but they should out of an abundance of caution (this was Spanier’s mistake)
(2) After notifying Curley Paterno thereafter stayed out of any subsequent investigation which is precisely the rule the hypocrites in the NCAA adopted shortly thereafter
(3) Paterno wanted to tell his side of the story after the arrest but was denied the right to do so by the BOT
(4) One of the “criticisms” leveled against Paterno by the lynch mob was that he “should have done more” but none of them after said what exactly more he should have done. Parenthetically, Sandusky was a former coach who was granted access to PSU facilities by others who negotiated Sandusky’s retirement package. Although he was not directly involved in those negotiations, he was asked to comment on the package and his handwritten notes confirm he specifically said permitting Sandusky access seemed okay but that should not include permitting him to bring Second Mile kids on campus (you can find this in one of the Appendices to the Freeh report). While it is true that Joe’s reason for saying Second Mile kids on campus was because of potential liability concerns (one of his kids was injured in a trampoline incident as I recall) the fact is that if the board heeded Paterno’s advice then, none of this would have happened.
Don’t even get me started on the failures of DPW (whose charge is to protect minors) and the Second Mile (a child protection agency). Interestingly, neither Corbett nor Shapiro who moved heaven and earth to get guilty pleas from Curley and Schultz and a conviction against Spanier ever conducted any investigation of the DPW or the Second Mile despite the fact that the AG’s office had direct oversight responsibility over both. Shall I go on? I have always said Joe should have retired 10 years sooner, but the vilification of Paterno over the Sandusky situation is the most egregious example of scapegoating I have seen in my 70 years of living on this planet and more than 40 years of practicising law which includes representing parents of children subjected to child abuse.

No, I'm not talking about how he handled what was reported to him. I'm talking about how they responded when it was released in the media. Also, an attorney--I'm not saying he didn't again wrong legally. Don't even know why you thought that.

Boeheim, hate him all you want it's legit, handled things PERFECTLY in dealing with the media. Perfect.

Many moons ago when I worked in advertising I had the good fortune to attend the Street & Smiths NCAA basketball preview dinner at The Downtown Athletic Club. It was probably early November 1994.

My wife and I were seated at a table with Jim and Lawrence Moten. My take aways were:

1- he is much bigger in real life than he appears on tv

2- while he may have been paid to appear, he also was there to promote Moten as a potential All-American, which he did very well

3- on tv he looks like a squid, and his voice is squeeky and whiny. At dinner he was thoughtful and pretty much normal

4- the only athlete that I ever saw give a worse speech than Moten that n8ght was Jonny Mosely the freestyle skier. Between the two of them they may have half a brain.

5- given that his marriage was either over or ending, his program was coming off probation, and they had taken a train down from Syracuse that afternoon, he wasn't as much of a douche as I thought he woukd be.

That said:

I've rooted against him ever since I first saw him coaching in the mid 70s.

A great childhpod memory was seeing top seed SU with Louis and Bouie lose in the East regional semifinals at The Spectrum with my dad. Lute Olsen's Iowa team upset them, then John Thompson/ Gtown in the final. Excellent outcomes!

Saw Nova upset SU at The Palestra in Pearl Washington's freshman year. Ended up at Smokey Joe's with Harold Pressley and Harold Jensen- my buddy played soccer for Nova and k ew them. Legendary night.

The Paterno comments only made me dislike him more. Good riddance to a guy who skirted the rules to his advantage for his whole career and likely gets more credit than he deserves.

F him. Shoulda left years ago.

Nah.. I’ll take Joe’s honest but sensitive to the situation approach over Boeheim’s impulsive outburst response. Boeheim won a lot of games but as a human he’s just a basketball coach. Not an educator, not a mentor, just a dude in a gym. He’s no Joe Paterno. Boeheim acted like a child the majority of his career and got away with it. College basketball didn’t lose anything today. Nobody will care that he’s gone.

I'm not saying Boeheim's a better person, coach, or anything else but he handled that situation far better. That's the reality of it. Joe's approach was wrong. There's no spinning that.

Boeheim is a cheating douche - good riddance to that POS. Of course ESPN will kiss his ass since they are littered with Syracuse Grads.
Don't forget ESPN is run by flaming liberals. Joe was a staunch conservative, all the more reason why they treated him unfairly and participated and watched with glee as they ruined his good name.
