#1....This is NOT a thread dissing our rb's. I think all 4 of them are good players. But as I have watched the first 3 games, I can point out at least 5-6 instances where if Journey Brown had not been forced to retire from football, he wold have been GONE! Seriously, that dude was so freaking fast and hit the hole so quick. Noah Cain hit the hole a couple of times and I thought, "great run" but JB would have been in the end zone. JB got to his top speed so freaking quick...miss that kid. Hope he is doing well. #2....I am glad I don't have to tackle #21, that would leave a mark!

If you weren’t intending to disrespect our current running backs, why didn’t you title the thread “journey brown”? You can talk about how great someone is/was without comparing them to others…

+1. I think the OL is getting a little more criticism than might be warranted, can they play better? Absolutely but the RB's are not doing them any favors. I saw holes and lanes at both the Ball St. game and Auburn game that Barkley, Sanders or Journey would have housed or at the very least gotten huge chunk plays.
I think we might see that in the coming weeks with Lovett.
Nick Singelton will not be redshirting.

Agree....it looks like Lovett has that extra step. Although the one carry he had, his ball security had me in terror!

Are we already anointing a HS RB to go along with a HS QB (Allar) as the best players on our roster? Let's not forget Cain is coming off a serious injury. I expect he will continue to improve every week. And Lee looked pretty darn good on his first two carries on Saturday, until he fumbled. Don't believe he saw another carry in the game. These two will be a pretty formidable duo in the coming weeks. And 28 and/or 10 will provide a nice complement with an extra burst of speed.

In the little bit that we saw Lovett he seemed to have that extra burst that the others don't have.

It also didnt help that Lee was yanked after the fumble and didn't play again.

I know Lee appears to be in the dog house for that fumble but, I'm super excited to see him get some more reps. He looks like he could be something special when he puts it all together.

Lovett will be the guy soon. Cain will continue to start, but Lovett will see the bulk of the carries.

I don't believe I said any of that or even implied it.
Yes Cain is not back to his 2019 version yet.
But if you don't think Singelton is going to be playing next year I don't know what else to tell you.

IMO, Lee will get Villanova and trash time reps, but he is done in big games. In big games you will see Lovett take over that #2 role.
You might be right, but I sure hope not. I just don't think that is how you build confidence in a young player. You coach and preach ball security, you make him practice it hard, everyone should rip at the ball in practice. He should have the chance to earn back playing time. I agree with other posters, I think he has potential to be a tremendous back and I think he gives something our other backs don't....a rare combination of shiftiness and power.

Not sure I agree with the process either....I just remember that it was handled that way with Slade for sure and Miles Sanders to an extent.

If Journey had not been forced to retire, there's little chance he'd be here this year. I think he would have had a strong year last year and been off to the NFL.

Guys like Brown, Barkley, and KJ Carter are rare. Seldom do you find guys that have world class speed also be able to be able to handle the rigors of being a real RB that can run inside or outside. It is why guys like Hershel Walker and Bo Jackson get remembered for being great. Over, around or through it didn't matter.

Lee scares me when he goes in, because of the fumbles. I hope he can fix that because he is exciting to watch.

I’m not sure why everyone is so down on the running backs. Cain was a beast before the injury and Lee really stepped up big the back half of last year. Early in the year, Auburn and Wisconsin definitely played run first and made Sean Clifford beat them. Hell - haven’t we all seen the bad press Clifford has gotten both here and in the general sports media? You don’t think teams thought, “stuff the run and make Clifford beat us”.

I like to think that going 28-32 without a huge ground game against a good Auburn defense will put more DC’s on notice that just loading the box will get them a big old “L”.

the better Clifford plays- the more the running game will open up. Yea Lovett looks like the speed guy, and I think it will be a dose of Cain/Lee for power runs and Lovett will probably bump Ford and Holmes mostly. He’s a different runner. On the goal line, I’m still riding Cain then Lee. Cain has great vision and always seems to fall forward, get a tough couple yards.

Injuries and all bets are off. Until then it will be Cain, Lovett and Lee if he redeems himself.
Again barring injury, I don't see a clear role for the other two.
I'm pretty sure Holmes and Ford will hit the portal after the season which will leave PSU (I also believe Cain will declare):

Lee
Singleton
Allen

Ford might stay, but I see a 3 person rotation being a little more player friendly than a 4 player rotation.

Cain needs carries to get back to where he was. I believe that he is not seeing his blocking as well as he used to. He's rusty and does not seem to be delivering the power like he did. But, on his 3rd down touchdown, he saw Walker moving the pile down the line and made the proper cut to walk into the end zone. If he went where it was called to go, he would have been stopped. He's getting there.

Lee is running with much more speed this year. As long as we can keep him going forward instead of sideways, he will be great, if he learns to control the ball. He is extremely powerful and has a burst that he did not have last year.

We'll see about Lovett. Looked good in his two touches. He pass blocked well, which is important. Cain is very good at pass blocking which is part of why he is in there. He stands up blitzing linebackers which most RB's cannot do.

Mad....so right. I have totally forgotten about last year. I think alot of PSU people have also forgotten about last year...

Cain clearly not where he was in 2019. give it time.
Lee is much quicker, and I think smaller. I thought he was 240 last year and now around 225
Ford - has some tools but maybe he is better suited to working out of the slot. He does not seem to be able to get the end on a sweep given his straight speed.
Holmes - not sure what to expect there. is he power or speed guy? he had had no meaningful touches since arriving
Lovett - Phil said he was "dinged up" in camp, so not sure what type of injury has kept him out. Of all the backs, he looks the quickest.

Actually agree that one and likely two will hit the portal (and predict there will be countless threads about how they never got a chance and CJF picked the wrong starters). Something's missing with Ford.....can't put my finger on it, but to bring in Lovett was telling.

Only disagree with the word little......please replace with "no"

He's listed as 239 so I'm not sure he's a lot smaller this year. I would guess they are all in much better condition given the lack of training last year and a year in the program.

I think Holmes sticks it out another year at minimum. He's a speed back, but appears to be an ATH playing RB for now. He's behind older players, and we have a great rep with developing RBs right now.

Ford I can see looking. Limited carries before Lovett played this week. He's got a role on the team, but is he willing to come back next year? Assuming Lovett is gone. I don't see Cain bolting for the NFL yet either.

Nick Singleton is going to fix that problem.
