at a grocery store here in State College. This is the issue with Jahan Dotson on the cover.
Some quick history with my interest in the publication:
I was introduced to BWI back in 1994 - my grandfather, a long time season ticket holder, would save his issues for me to read each week. You can imagine how important these
paper copies were at that time before the proliferation of the internet. Oh, and the spectacular 1994 season didn't hurt in terms of interest and excitement.
I also recall the special recruiting issues BWI put out in the past. One that stands out is the issue that highlighted Courtney Brown's recruitment - BWI was all over it and Phil and Co. realized what it meant that Brown made it to PS. BWI talked about the extensive recruiting area PS had staked out in search of blue-chips and the mag even included color-coded recruiting maps -- it was all exceptionally well done. I was so insistent on reading BWI that my grandfather suggested that I get my own subscription, which I did soon after graduating college. BWI sent my very first issue issues to me in my apartment in downtown Baltimore, Maryland - I read the 97 preview in one setting on an early August afternoon.
Back to my grandfather - he an my grandmother were season ticket holder for 30+ years. They were retired teachers from the Harrisburg school district and they became interested in the program as my mom was an undergraduate at Penn State (she graduated in 1964). My grandparents were big Penn State supporters and this coincided with the emergence of a young new head coach at Penn State from Brooklyn. My grandparents admired Joe greatly even early on in 1966 and 1967 when he was still feeling his way. My grandfolks attended all of the big games and they saw both national championship games in person: The Duel in the Desert and the 82 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. They witnessed the golden years of this program and I was raised in that environment.
Anyway, a big thank you to Phil Grosz and his staff. Phil, I know this has been a tough year for you with the loss of your brother Bill. Thank you for your enthusiasm and coverage of Penn State. I've been a supporter of yours for years and years Phil and I just wanted to acknowledge the great job that you do. Maybe this season will be a special one for us all!
