Just when you think PSU’s men’s B-Ball deserves its lofty rankings....Lose 2 in a row!

Thankfully, the realists are back. Hopefully we still make the tournament and don’t get blown out in our first round game if we make it.

Guys....our next 4 games are against really good teams. Illinois was due and was basically in a must win situation. IU on Sunday is in the same boat. This league is crazy this year. PSU is as good as any team in the conference but we need to look at one team at a time and let this play out. But I personally would like to let it play out with a healthy Myreon Jones.

I only watched the final 8 minutes of last night's game. In that time, what I saw was a PSU offense that looked stagnant - no penetration into the paint. Was that offensive philosophy? or was it good defense by Illinois?

As well as Stevens has played this season (and especially in the last 10 games or so), he cost them points with a missed layup and a botched dunk. It happens, not many people play light's out every contest and it was obvious that Illinois was focused on PSU's 11.

Illinois' 11 couldn't be slowed down or stopped - they as a team were quicker and they did penetrate consistently, creating too many easy points. On the other side of the ledger, little to no penetration coupled with too many "late" 3 point heaves spelled doom for the good guys.

I, for one, will credit Illinois for a good coaching job and great team effort.

Again, this is what I saw in the last 8 minutes of the contest.

On to the next game. Big time college basketball is a grind.

Penn State lost to a good team last night. With the run Penn State had been on, an off night was bound to happen. Sometimes the shots don't fall. Sometimes you're tired. Whatever. Maybe this loss gets the team refocused and they take care of business the next time out.

The wild optimists don't bother me, but the arrogant finger pointers do. Reality has no place in their world. This is a very good team and all Penn State fans should enjoy their accomplishments, but there are some on both sides that just want to thump their chests and condemn anyone who dares voice a contrary opinion. They take the joy out of following this team.

And Illinois got one of their big guns back from injury, as I understand. There are *five* teams in third, one game back. It's a deep conference which outside of maybe Maryland (who we beat) has no dominant team but a bunch of good ones. One plus for PSU--currently the only team with a winning record on the road.

I think PSU bounces back from this loss. The question is when (and if) we get Jones back.

Relax.... What we saw last night is "college basketball 2020". There really are no great teams this year. Penn State is not, and never was a 'great' team. Baylor is not great. Duke is not great. Kansas is not great..... There are no 'great' teams in college basketball this year, which means any team can lose on any given night. There are many pretty good teams who are all pretty equal.

Penn State is still a good team. They are a legit Top 20 team in college bsketball this year. Last night does not change that.

Just one game....not a momentum killer by any means. Right the ship this weekend!
IIRC PSU started 2-4 in the BiG. The home loss to Wisconsin was particularly tough but few expected us to get that back by winning at UM and MSU. Can we get this home loss back by winning at Indiana or Iowa? Or do we finish the BiG season like we started it.

BLAM!

A very cold dose of reality hits you straight in the face and you falter.

:);):)

WHAT?
They shot terribly and lost a very close game.
PSU was 4/19 from 3pt range.
Seriously, if Brockington (I think he was 1 for 7 at one point) makes one addl 3, I think PSU probably wins.
If I'm Pat, my message once the cameras were shut off is that they shot very poorly but still could/should have won. PSU made a few mental mistakes to turn good possessions into bad that wound up being the difference. The film on this game is a teaching moment to clean up some of that for the stretch run.

Yep! Duke is NOT great!

Maybe there are a lot of great teams. Or maybe you're right that they're just good teams. How do you know if they're good or great? One thing is certain, there is a lot of parity this year.

Everyone (and I mean everyone) had a really bad game last night, and they still were in it until the end vs. an underranked Illinois team that just got back their superstar player, that was basically playing in a must-win game.

Losses like this happen to everyone (especially this year), pick up and move on to the next one.

Hey Fair it’s just like the present political hate filled circus.

While I agree that a Great Team does not exist this year there are teams that are "almost" great and in my humble opinion it comes down to coaching, scouting, DEPTH, raw talent, perimeter and interior play. Obviously size, speed and believe it or not pedigree is a factor. You're correct, the top 6 teams are not great but they are much much closer.

PSU was bound to have a let down and lose, and Illinois is a very talented and athletic team. ESPN bracketology has Illinois as an an 8 seed and PSU as a 3 seed as of yesterday. I believe PSU just does not match up as well with very athletic teams that can push their perimeter defense out to take away the open 3 point looks that PSU has gotten this season, and is still quick enough to double down on Stevens. I don't believe PSU just "shot bad", but I give the opponent, Illinois in this case, credit for playing the type of defense that causes their opponent to shoot a poor percentage.

But to be a "final four team" PSU will likely have to beat a couple teams that are significantly more athletic than PSU. We'll see if Pat can make some adjustments to his offense and overcome the shortcomings exposed last night, or if getting Jones back (hopefully soon) is the spark that opens up the court for PSU's inside game.

The NCAA is about getting hot at the right time, so I really don't think losing a game or 2 before the tournament does anything to hurt PSU's NCAA chances. The most important thing is for the team to get fully healthy going into March Madness..........

Just annoying that while some are really enjoying the ride of a really good Penn State basketball team, others are just waiting for that loss to shove it in their face. I like this team. I like the players. They played hard last night and lost. And those of us rooting hard for them feel the disappointment along with it, not the feeling that "oh well, they were due to lose". Certainly don't need the comments, "back to reality" like those that insist on crapping on anyone with hopes for PSU basketball to continue to do big things this year.

I think we have the ability to compare what we are seeing now vs. what we know to be great. I can look at THIS Penn State team and know it's better than last year's team. I could look at THIS year's Alabama football team and know that it was not a great Bama team when compared vs. some of the great teams they had the last few years. I can look at Villanova THIS year and compare them with the great Nova teams the last few years and say "THIS Nova team is not great". I can look at Duke THIS year and by comparison say that they do not have a dominating great player like they did last year in Zion Williamson who could carry them into the Final 4...... Couldn't you look at Penn State's Offense this year and say "We do not have a great Offense like we did in 2016"....

They looked tired- but anytime you lose at home to an unranked team (although a decent team)- it's a bad loss. Gotta get their #2 scrorer back and close out strong.

That’s one way of looking at it!
