Who says lightning can't strike twice in the same place? (Tulsa and Kansas City)
(Different city, but same event)
Block of hotel rooms canceled "again" a week ago (2 weeks before arrival).
The excuse this time is that they overbooked and expected more guests would cancel. Wrong.
The sad thing is, there's really noting we can do, except try to find alternate lodging. At least this year, the canceling hotel has helped with that. We were walking distance to arena, now we're not.
Before you ask, we made these arrangements over a year ago, had a signed contract, and a deposit was paid.
This sucks.
Wonder what excuse they'll come up with in Philly next year?

There are only about 3 or 4 hotels within walking distance to Wells Fargo in Philadelphia. You'll want to stay somewhere in center city or Rittenhouse Square, but make it close to Board Street, which if it had a number would be 14th Street (that's an easy way to find it if you're lost in the city). The subway runs under Broad and the last station is at the sports complex.

Or airport, which has a ton of hotels and is close to sports complex. Good thing about Philly is that the parking situation is plenty. All the stadiums / arenas are at same location. Convenient to 95, 76 and broad street line.

Alternate KC hotel is south of the city.
Yeah, those downtown KC prices are gouging fans; supply and demand, I know. I refuse to be subjected to that.
Philly hotel is downtown, and good location.
Classic Seinfeld episode.
I also feel like this meme applies to current situation...

Whatever happened to booking a "room"?

Now hotels book you for a chance at a room, then you pick it out when you arrive.

There should be 2-way penalty for cancelling reservations early. They’ll often charge the public if you cancel early, but you’re left high and dry if they do.

If you had time and money, it would be great to sue them in small claims court for the delta in price/comfort/convenience - just to eff with them

It’s Jerry’s reservation all over again.

This Seinfeld episode happened to me a few weeks ago with my rental car in Las Vegas.

To make it worse: it was a special equipment rental -- those have a dedicated reservation number and they confirm the rental multiple times. Also they don't keep the keys in the vehicle unlocked in the public garage -- they either keep the keys at the reservations desk, or they keep the vehicle in the service garage.

Likewise we can't take just any car -- it has to be the special equipment car. So if they're sold out, we're SOL.

When we arrived, the agent and her shift manager both said the car wasn't there. Nothing they can do, take Uber to the hotel and call them back in the morning. They wouldn't shuttle us to our hotel but at least would reimburse us for the Uber. After we walked to the Uber stand and I had selected the car, just as I was about to hit submit, the rental car agency called and said they found my car.

Aggravating and cost us a few hours, but at least it worked out.

Well, kinda sorta but not really 3 hotels within walking distance.

Closest is the Live! Casino/Hotel just on the other side of Citizens Bank Park. Can walk to the arena, about a mile but can cut thru stadium lots. The only things there are the arena and Xfinity Live. If that's all you want to do -- which is a shame because Philly is an incredible food city -- then this is a good option.

There's a Courtyard Marriott in the Navy Yard. Distance-wise it's probably walkable. But it's gonna be really isolated at night, and you have to walk thru a freeway underpass -- not something I'd want to do in a city at night. You'd be completely separate from the parts of the city that people want to do and see. And there's only one restaurant in the Navy Yard -- it's a glossy overpriced pub, maybe OK once but not for a 4-day weekend. I wouldn't stay here unless you plan to drive everywhere.

Then there's the hotel across from the Penrose Diner, near the PA 291/I-76 interchange. It's on the far end of walkable, around 1.5 mi. And that doesn't matter -- it's a crack house. DO NOT stay there.

The advice above is correct: stay in the general Center City/Chinatown/Old City areas. I'd modify slightly, that staying near the Market St subway line is also good. It has an interchange with the Market St subway (which goes directly to the arena) at City Hall.

Stay in the area north of South Street and south of Vine St/I-676. Preferably east of the Schuylkill River, which is where most of the fun will be. The closer you are to Broad St, the more likely you'll be around fellow fans. There are dozens of hotels in this part of the city, should not have difficulty finding a room even if there's a major event at the Convention Center.

Could also stay at Penn's campus -- if so, at one of the 3 hotels near the 34th St subway station. I'd rather stay in Center City, but around Penn is not a bad alternative, just a few minutes longer commute and fewer fans there.

Second Penn’s campus if you don’t care about being surrounded by fellow fans. Tons of places to eat after the day is done, safe, much quieter than downtown.

If they were decent, as I've had this happen years ago, they would pay for your stay elsewhere. Mine always did.

Seems you just can't handle tough hoteling. Man/woman up and take the gouging for the team. The board needs lots of onsite insiders reporting on happenings, coaching meltdowns, and other shenanigans at the T-Mobile Center next weekend.

Sorry to hear of your bad treatment, d-1980! Would you be willing to share the names of the hotels of the last two years? Also, would you be willing to tell us whether you booked directly or through Expedia, etc.? I want to know what companies to try to avoid in the future.

Lou Turk’s, though
LOL. For those from elsewhere: Lou Turk's is a low-end strip club in Delaware County, near PHL airport. It's the kind of place where the dancers and the patrons might combine for a full set of teeth. Maybe.

It's a running gag in the area -- basically, any time someone asks for a restaurant recommendation, some joker says Lou Turk's. Need to reserve a room for a kid's birthday party? Lou Turk's.

I'm planning on going next year with my wife and or daughter. If I go with them I'll stay at Live Hotel casino. I have not been their, years ago it's where Holiday Inn was . I stayed there a couple of times. Xfinity Center Bar Restraunt complex is pretty large and diversified in food options. Can get a little busy on football/baseball crowd but not to bad for smaller venue Wells Fargo crowd.
When do tickets become available and does Penn State get block of tickets that can be bought to fan base.

This happened to me at U23's a couple years back in Coralville, IA... But it was DAY OF MY STAY. No warning.

I will never use Expedia again. They hadnt done me wrong, until then. I was very rude on my drive home with the idiot that got to field my call.

How is the brewery situation in Philly these days? Haven't sampled in 15 years. used to go to Victory and Dock Street. Still there and are they still good/ Any better?

My experience is that direct is always best. I think the first to get booted in an overbook situation are the expedia/priceline/bookings.com people. You have more pull as a direct book. Costs a little more most times but you have more options, especially in big event situations.

My daughter stayed at Marriott near Convention center late last year.
Not good.
Dirty, Understaffed and not a walk around evening area.
My daughter can be a tough critic.

How is the brewery situation in Philly these days? Haven't sampled in 15 years. used to go to Victory and Dock Street. Still there and are they still good/ Any better?

Victory (18th/Parkway) and Yards (5th/Spring Garden) are the best breweries. One you can walk to, the other is 3 blocks from the subway.

Dock Street is still around. If you go, take Uber to the 21st/Washington location. Don't bother with the Fishtown location, it's further out and not somewhere you want to be at night (underneath overhead train tracks).

Iron Hill (12th/Market) is extremely convenient, but I can't recommend it. I've been a member since the Media location opened nearly 30 years ago -- but it's declined considerably, first after the head brewer left (10 years ago), and then when they went corporate, aggressively over-expanded, standardized everything, nearly all beers must be IPAs, etc. We used to go to our local branch at least monthly; now it's more like once every 2 years.

When I say Iron Hill standardized everything: they took pizza off the menu completely for a couple years because not all locations had an oven. What kind of brewery takes pizza off the menu? (It is on the menu now, but only because they had to stay relevant during Covid.)

Of course the undisputed champion of beer in Philly is Monk's Cafe in Center City (16th/Spruce), with its world-renowned Beer Bible. That is, if you can get in. They famously don't take reservations. Easiest is probably Sunday brunch, at opening.

Thank you very much!! I'm an imperial stout and belgian beer kinda guy. The 9-12% type beer. I don't know Yards. I've heard of Monk's Cafe. Which is more convenient to get to from Wells Fargo? Gotta buy you and others a beer in celebration of a 2025 title on Friday AND Saturday nights. It will be my first go. I'll have the time finally. Retiring next month. I hope.

The only places walkable from the arena are (1) Xfinity Live inside the stadium complex; (2) Chickie's & Pete's sports bar a few blocks away; (3) whatever is inside the Live Casino/Hotel; (4) maybe some old neighborhood dumps past Chickie & Pete's.

If you have 2.5 hrs between sessions, you might get to Monks and back without missing much. Yards is further out and requires a subway line change, need an extra 30 min round trip.

Monk's is definitely the place for Belgians. Also the place for any other kind of beer. Pack your backup liver.

Yards built its empire on its Philly Pale Ale. I don't know about their overall selection, but they probably have something that will work for you. Their beers that I've had were very good.

Oh, and congrats in advance on retirement! Jealous ...

It's my 3rd and final retirement. Selling the business. It was all fun though. What a life. Saw the world and scaled the personal mountains I wanted to scale. No ragrets as the Millers would say. I learned a lot about life at PSU and use my education every day. Remember the speakeasy Caboose behind the Train Station? Anyone else remember the Caboose? Early 80s for me.

Sounds like Monks might be the after session place. Thanks for the info! I'll definitely be going just need to plan it. I'd like to meet a lot of you guys. Everyone except Roarlions1 of course. He seems like a nasty guy. j/k Allen...

Maybe I can get TomSC to join me on the road trip.

Probably the same dancers today.
Was only there once. Went there for a bachelor's party, and I remember not being happy that it was our destination. It was a rough place. The bouncers were huge. One of the group got tossed for unruly behavior, and I was glad we had to leave. Even more glad that none of us ended up in Tinicum Marsh.

Just some clarification. Market St line runs East-West while the Broad St line runs North-South. The two lines intersect at City Hall (the building with Willy Penn at the top). The arena is the last stop going South on the Broad St. line. (Jefe, if you read your post again you'll understand why I posted this).

The Penrose Diner, which you mention above, is highly recommended if you like Diner food. I love Diner food and I've never had a bad meal there and their deserts are delicious. It's about a 20 minute walk from Wells Fargo but well worth it in my opinion.

Yep, the Market St line intersects with itself. I can be such a dolt.

And: SEPTA has a "Spring Garden" station on both lines. So at least I'm not the only moron in PHL.
